Ranking note: Gasherbrum III is also commonly assigned an elevation of 7,952 meters, but it has only about 355 meters of topographic prominence and is usually treated as a subsidiary summit of Gasherbrum II. 1. Mount Everest — 8,848.86 m / 29,032 ft
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in China, Asia, and the world above sea level. Its summit lies on the boundary between Tibet’s Tingri County and Nepal’s Solukhumbu District.
Known as Qomolangma or Chomolungma in Tibet and Sagarmatha in Nepal, Everest forms part of the Mahalangur Himal section of the Himalayas. Its northern slopes descend into Tibet through immense glacial valleys, including the Rongbuk Valley.
The Tibetan side provides access to the North Col and Northeast Ridge, one of Everest’s two principal historic climbing approaches. The first confirmed ascent was completed from Nepal on May 29, 1953, by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
2. K2 — 8,611 m / 28,251 ft
K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth and the highest summit in the Karakoram. It stands along the frontier between Xinjiang in China and Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan.

3. Lhotse — 8,516 m / 27,940 ft
Lhotse is the fourth-highest mountain in the world but ranks third among mountains lying wholly or partly in China. It rises immediately south of Mount Everest and is connected to it by the South Col.
Its name means “South Peak” in Tibetan, reflecting its position relative to Everest. Despite being closely connected to its higher neighbor, Lhotse qualifies as an independent mountain because the saddle between the two summits provides sufficient topographic prominence.
The mountain is particularly famous for its enormous South Face, one of the tallest and most imposing mountain walls on Earth. Its main summit was first reached in 1956 by Swiss climbers Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss.

Makalu stands southeast of Everest on the border between Tibet and Nepal. Its isolated, four-sided pyramidal form makes it one of the most recognizable of the world’s highest mountains.

Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl completed its first ascent in June 1957. They climbed without high-altitude porters and returned to base camp without receiving assistance from a large support team.

Gasherbrum II, originally designated K4, is the 13th-highest mountain in the world. It rises between Gasherbrum I and the lower summits of the Gasherbrum massif on the China–Pakistan border.

Shishapangma is the highest mountain located entirely within China. It rises in Nyalam County in the Tibet Autonomous Region, several kilometers north of the Nepalese border.
As the 14th-highest mountain in the world, Shishapangma is the lowest of the traditionally recognized 8,000-meter peaks. It was also the last of the 14 to receive a confirmed first ascent.

The Himalayas, Karakoram, and Tibetan Plateau developed through the continuing collision of the Indian and Eurasian continental plates.
India moved northward and collided with Eurasia tens of millions of years ago. Because both landmasses carried relatively buoyant continental crust, large sections of rock were compressed, folded, faulted, thickened, and forced upward rather than simply disappearing into the mantle.

None of China’s ten highest mountains is an ordinary hiking destination. Even the least technical routes involve extreme altitude, rapidly changing weather, glacier travel, avalanche exposure, and long periods above the elevation at which the human body can fully acclimatize.
Foreign expeditions operating from the Chinese side normally require official authorization, specialist logistical arrangements, local support, and peak-specific climbing permits. Access policies can change, and entire climbing seasons may be restricted or canceled.
Everest and Cho Oyu have historically received the most expedition traffic from Tibet. K2 and the Gasherbrum peaks are more commonly approached from Pakistan because the major established base-camp routes follow glaciers on the southwestern side of the Karakoram.
