Sunset Crater

Rising above a landscape of black lava, rust-red cinders, and ponderosa pine forest northeast of Flagstaff, Sunset Crater is one of the most distinctive volcanic mountains in Arizona. The remarkably well-preserved cinder cone reaches about 8,043 feet (2,451 meters) in elevation and stands roughly 1,000 feet above the surrounding terrain.
Sunset Crater is particularly notable because of its youth. The volcano erupted around 1085 CE, making it the site of the most recent volcanic eruption in Arizona and the youngest of roughly 600 volcanoes in the San Francisco Volcanic Field.
Today, the volcano and its surrounding lava flows are protected within Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Visitors cannot climb Sunset Crater itself—the summit has been closed to hiking since 1973 to protect its extremely fragile cinder slopes—but several trails allow hikers to explore the lava flows and volcanic landscape around its base.

🌋 Formation of Sunset Crater
Sunset Crater formed during a dramatic volcanic eruption approximately a thousand years ago.
The eruption began when magma reached the surface along a fissure roughly 6 to 7 miles long. Lava fountains erupted along the crack in what geologists sometimes describe as a “curtain of fire.” As activity became concentrated around the main vent, blobs of molten rock were thrown into the air.
The fragments cooled as they fell back toward the ground, accumulating around the vent as scoria, cinders, ash, and volcanic bombs. Over the course of the eruption, these loose volcanic materials built the steep-sided cone visible today.
Sunset Crater ultimately grew to around 1,000 feet above the surrounding landscape, unusually large for a cinder cone.
The eruption also produced extensive lava flows, most notably the Bonito Lava Flow and Kana’a Lava Flow. Portions of this rugged black lava remain almost barren a millennium later, creating one of northern Arizona’s most striking landscapes.

🔥 The Eruption of 1085
Modern geological research places the eruption at approximately 1085 CE. The main eruptive episode appears to have lasted only weeks or months, but its effects were profound.
Lava fountains may have reached hundreds of feet into the air, while eruption columns carried ash and cinders high above northern Arizona. Volcanic material fell across a vast area surrounding the volcano, and lava flowed for miles from the vents.
The eruption deposited volcanic material across hundreds of square miles and radically altered the surrounding landscape.
It also took place in an inhabited region.
Indigenous communities were farming and living around the San Francisco Volcanic Field when the eruption occurred. Archaeological evidence shows that settlements and agricultural fields were abandoned as lava and ash transformed the landscape.
One particularly fascinating discovery is volcanic rock containing impressions of corn cobs and kernels. These unusual “corn rocks” provide physical evidence connecting the eruption with people living in the region at the time.
🪨 Why Is Sunset Crater Red?
The volcano owes its name to the reddish coloration near its summit.
Much of Sunset Crater consists of dark basaltic scoria, but oxidation altered some of the volcanic material near the top of the cone, producing shades of red, orange, and rusty brown.
Against the dark lower slopes, the colorful upper portion of the volcano can resemble a mountain illuminated by sunset—hence the name Sunset Crater.
The combination of red cinders, black lava fields, green ponderosa pines, and the blue skies of northern Arizona makes the volcano especially photogenic.
🏔️ Nearest Higher Neighbor
The Nearest Higher Neighbor of Sunset Crater is Darton Dome, located to the north-northwest.
Sunset Crater has approximately 1,009 feet of topographic prominence and 2.11 miles of isolation, giving the relatively compact cinder cone a surprisingly strong presence in the surrounding landscape.
Farther west, the much higher volcanic mountains of the Flagstaff region dominate the horizon. Nearby O’Leary Peak rises to nearly 9,000 feet, while the massive San Francisco Peaks tower beyond it.
🥾 Can You Hike to the Top of Sunset Crater?
No. Sunset Crater itself is closed to hiking.
A summit trail once climbed the volcano, but thousands of hikers gradually carved deep trenches into its loose volcanic slopes. Because cinders are easily displaced and vegetation recovers extremely slowly in this environment, the damage proved difficult to reverse.
The National Park Service closed the summit trail in 1973, and hiking on the volcano remains prohibited.
Visitors must remain on designated trails throughout the monument. Backcountry hiking is also restricted to protect fragile geological features, archaeological sites, and recovering vegetation.
Fortunately, several trails provide excellent views of Sunset Crater without damaging the cone.
🥾 Lava Flow Trail

The Lava Flow Trail is one of the best introductions to the Sunset Crater landscape.
The approximately 1-mile loop travels through the Bonito Lava Flow directly below the volcano. Along the way, visitors can examine jagged basalt, volcanic cinders, lava formations, and plants slowly reclaiming the volcanic terrain.
An upper 0.25-mile section is paved and accessible, making part of the volcanic landscape available to visitors using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers.
The trail is relatively easy, although unpaved portions cross rough volcanic terrain.
🌋 A’a Trail
For a short look at one of Sunset Crater’s most dramatic lava formations, the A’a Trail is another excellent option.
The trail is only about 0.25 mile round-trip and crosses an area of rough basaltic lava.
The term a’a comes from Hawaiian terminology for a type of lava flow characterized by an extremely rough, broken, and jagged surface. Walking beside these formations provides a vivid impression of how inhospitable the landscape must have appeared immediately after the eruption.
Visitors should avoid stepping off designated trails. Volcanic rock can be both fragile and surprisingly sharp.
🌲 Lenox Crater and O’Leary Peak
Visitors hoping for a higher vantage point can explore other volcanic mountains in the surrounding area where access is permitted.
The Lenox Crater Trail has traditionally provided a route up another nearby cinder cone, with views toward Sunset Crater, the Bonito Lava Flow, O’Leary Peak, and the San Francisco Peaks. Because trail conditions and closures can change following wildfire or restoration work, visitors should check current National Park Service conditions before planning this hike.
Another option is O’Leary Peak. The higher summit overlooks Sunset Crater and provides an impressive perspective on the hundreds of volcanic cones scattered across the region.
🌲 Life Returning to the Lava
One of the fascinating aspects of Sunset Crater is watching ecological succession unfold across a landscape created only about a millennium ago.
Some areas support mature ponderosa pine forest, while younger-looking lava surfaces remain sparsely vegetated. Hardy grasses, shrubs, wildflowers, lichens, and trees have gradually established themselves wherever enough soil and moisture have accumulated.
The contrast can be dramatic. A green ponderosa may grow only a short distance from a seemingly lifeless field of angular black basalt.
This patchwork offers a living demonstration of how ecosystems gradually reclaim volcanic terrain.

🦌 Wildlife Around Sunset Crater
The forests and open volcanic landscape surrounding Sunset Crater support a variety of northern Arizona wildlife.
Visitors may encounter mule deer, elk, coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, and numerous bird species. Bobcats also inhabit the region, while mountain lions and black bears are considerably less commonly seen.
The transition between pine forest, meadow, cinder fields, and lava flows creates several different habitats within a relatively small area.
Wildlife viewing can be particularly good around dawn and dusk, when many mammals are most active.
🗺️ The San Francisco Volcanic Field
Sunset Crater is only one small part of a vast volcanic region.
The San Francisco Volcanic Field contains roughly 600 volcanic vents, cones, domes, and related features spread across northern Arizona. Volcanism has occurred here intermittently for millions of years.
Its most spectacular landmark is the enormous San Francisco Peaks volcanic complex west of Sunset Crater.
Nearby peaks such as O’Leary Peak, Darton Dome, Elden Mountain, Schultz Peak, and Agassiz Peak are all reminders of the extraordinary geologic history surrounding Flagstaff.
Although Sunset Crater itself is not expected to erupt again, the broader volcanic field is considered geologically active. Any future eruption would most likely occur at a new vent somewhere within the field rather than reopening Sunset Crater.
🏞️ Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
Concern for the volcano’s preservation played an important role in creating Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
During the 1920s, a Hollywood production reportedly proposed using explosives on the volcano to create a simulated eruption for a movie. Geologist Harold S. Colton and others opposed the plan and helped build public support for protecting the area.
President Herbert Hoover established Sunset Crater National Monument in 1930.
The name was later changed to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, emphasizing that the protected feature is a volcano rather than simply an impact-style crater.
Today, the monument preserves the cone, lava flows, geological formations, archaeological resources, wildlife habitat, and cultural history associated with the eruption.
🚗 Visiting Sunset Crater

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is located about 15 miles northeast of Flagstaff.
Many visitors explore it as part of the scenic road connecting Sunset Crater with Wupatki National Monument. The complete scenic loop covers about 34 miles and descends from the ponderosa forests near Sunset Crater toward the much warmer and more open Painted Desert landscape around Wupatki.
The route offers an unusually concentrated combination of geology, archaeology, mountain scenery, and high-desert landscapes.
Because roads, trails, and visitor facilities can occasionally close for weather, wildfire recovery, construction, or other conditions, checking current National Park Service alerts before traveling is worthwhile.
☀️ Best Time to Visit Sunset Crater
Sunset Crater can be visited throughout much of the year, but conditions are very different from the hot deserts farther south in Arizona.
The monument lies at approximately 7,000 feet, while Sunset Crater itself rises above 8,000 feet.
Late spring through fall generally provides the easiest conditions for hiking and sightseeing. Summer days can be warm, but nights are often cool. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible during Arizona’s summer monsoon season.
Autumn can bring crisp temperatures and beautiful color to the surrounding forest.
Winter transforms the volcanic landscape completely. Snow frequently blankets the cinder cones and lava fields, creating spectacular scenery, although freezing temperatures and winter driving conditions are possible.
Weather can change quickly at this elevation in any season.
🌄 Why Sunset Crater Is Special
Many mountains tell stories stretching back millions of years. Sunset Crater tells a story that is remarkably recent.
Only about a thousand years ago, there was no mountain here.
Then earthquakes shook the landscape, the ground opened, lava fountains erupted into the sky, and millions of tons of volcanic material accumulated into a new 1,000-foot-tall cone.
People witnessed it happen.
Their homes, fields, and communities were altered by the eruption, while the surrounding ecosystem began a process of destruction and renewal that continues today.
