The Altai Mountains are one of Central Asia’s great mountain systems, spreading across the borderlands of Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. Snow-covered summits, broad steppes, glacial valleys, deep forests, alpine lakes, and high plateaus give the Altai an extraordinary variety of landscapes.

Stretching roughly northwest to southeast through the heart of Eurasia, the range reaches its highest point at Belukha Mountain, which rises to 4,506 meters (14,783 feet) on the Russia–Kazakhstan border. The Altai Mountains form a vast and complex mountain region at the meeting point of Siberia, Central Asia, and Mongolia. Rather than being one continuous ridge, the Altai consists of numerous ranges, massifs, plateaus, river valleys, and intermontane basins.

📍 Location

The Altai occupy one of Asia’s most fascinating geographic crossroads.

The Russian section lies primarily within the Altai Republic, immediately north of the borders with Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia. Some of the range’s most heavily glaciated terrain occurs here, particularly around the Katun Range and Belukha.

Farther south and east, the mountains continue through western Mongolia as the Mongol Altai. This region contains several peaks above 4,000 meters, including Khüiten Peak and Mönkhkhairkhan.

🪨 Geology

The Altai have an exceptionally complicated geological history.

Much of the region contains Paleozoic rocks that formed during ancient episodes of ocean closure, continental collision, volcanism, and mountain building. Granitic intrusions, metamorphic rocks, and deformed sedimentary formations are widespread.

The modern relief, however, is much younger than many of the rocks themselves. Renewed uplift and faulting during the Cenozoic helped raise older geological structures into today’s mountain landscape. Research continues into precisely when and how rapidly the modern Altai achieved their present elevations.

Tectonic activity has not completely ended. Active fault systems remain within the region, demonstrating that deformation of continental Asia extends remarkably far north of the Himalayas.

Once the mountains had risen, repeated Ice Age glaciations reshaped them dramatically. Glaciers carved U-shaped valleys, cirques, moraines, and sharp alpine ridges that remain prominent across the high Altai today.

Glaciers are among the defining features of the highest Altai.

The Belukha massif, Tavan Bogd, North Chuya Range, South Chuya Range, and several Mongolian Altai massifs contain extensive present-day or recently glaciated terrain.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

For most hiking and trekking, summer is the easiest season, particularly from roughly June through September.

June

Valleys become green and wildflowers begin appearing, although snow may remain on higher passes.

July & August

These are generally the most practical months for high-country trekking. Temperatures are comparatively mild, trails are most accessible, and many alpine areas are free of seasonal snow.

However, thunderstorms, cold rain, sudden snow, and freezing nighttime temperatures are still possible at altitude.

September

Early autumn can produce beautiful colors in larch forests and clearer conditions, but nights become colder and fresh snowfall becomes increasingly likely.

💧 Rivers & Lakes

The Altai play an important hydrological role in inland Eurasia.
