The Western Ghats are one of the great mountain systems of India, forming a long, rugged escarpment that parallels the country’s western coast. Stretching roughly 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from Gujarat and Maharashtra southward through Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, the range separates much of the Deccan Plateau from the narrow coastal lowlands bordering the Arabian Sea.

📍 Location

The Western Ghats run roughly parallel to the Arabian Sea along the western side of India.

Their northern reaches begin around the Gujarat–Maharashtra region south of the Tapi River before continuing through Maharashtra and Goa. The mountains then extend across western Karnataka and into the highlands of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Western Ghats are substantially more continuous than the Eastern Ghats on the opposite side of the Indian peninsula.

🪨 Geology

The Western Ghats have a very different geological story from the Himalayas.

Rather than forming primarily through the collision of two continental plates, the range represents the elevated, faulted, weathered, and eroded western margin of the Deccan Plateau.

Its development is connected to the breakup of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana and the geological processes that shaped the Indian Plate as it separated from other southern landmasses and began its long northward journey.
