The mountains are primarily composed of ancient sedimentary rocks, especially greywacke, with narrow bands of finer sedimentary material. Toward the western side of the Main Divide, increasing heat and pressure have transformed some of these rocks into schist.
Some of the original sediments are hundreds of millions of years old, meaning that although the modern mountains are geologically young, many of the rocks within them are ancient.
