Mount Victoria rises to 4,038 meters (13,248 feet) in Papua New Guinea’s rugged Owen Stanley Range. It is the highest summit in the range and one of the highest and most topographically prominent mountains in the country.

Although Mount Victoria lies only about 75 kilometers (47 miles) north-northeast of Port Moresby, reaching it is a serious wilderness undertaking. Dense tropical forest, steep valleys, high rainfall, limited infrastructure, and remote mountain communities separate the summit from the capital. Above the forests, the landscape changes dramatically into cool montane vegetation and exposed high-elevation terrain.

Mount Victoria is also historically significant. The first recorded ascent took place in 1889, when British New Guinea administrator Sir William MacGregor reached the summit during an expedition into the Owen Stanley Mountains.

Mount Victoria is located in southeastern Papua New Guinea within the Owen Stanley Range.

🪨 Geology

Mount Victoria is not a volcanic cone like many well-known mountains elsewhere in Papua New Guinea.

Instead, it belongs to the immense tectonically uplifted mountain system of mainland New Guinea.

The geology of Papua New Guinea is unusually complicated because the region lies near the interaction of the Australian Plate, Pacific Plate, and several smaller tectonic blocks and microplates.

Mount Victoria should be considered an expedition mountain rather than an established recreational hiking peak.

Unlike Mount Wilhelm, which has a relatively well-established trekking approach, Mount Victoria receives very few climbers.

There is no single heavily maintained tourist trail to the summit.

Modern expeditions have approached the mountain from communities around the Owen Stanley Range and Kokoda region. A documented 2016 expedition began after traveling through Kokoda and Kanga Village, with local porters helping the trekking party navigate and establish a path through the remote terrain.

The entire expedition lasted approximately 12 days.

In the Owen Stanley Mountains, however, the word “dry” is relative.

Rain can occur at any time.

Kokoda Track

The Kokoda Track crosses the Owen Stanley Range between the Port Moresby side of the mountains and Kokoda in Oro Province.

Today it is one of Papua New Guinea’s best-known trekking routes, but it is also an important historical landscape associated with the Kokoda Campaign of World War II.

📜 History & First Recorded Ascent

Before European exploration, the mountains of southeastern New Guinea were already landscapes known, named, traveled, and used by Indigenous communities.

European explorers initially referred to Mount Victoria simply as the Great Mountain.

Several colonial expeditions attempted to reach high parts of the Owen Stanley Range during the nineteenth century, but the extreme terrain and difficult relationships with communities in the region prevented early attempts from reaching the summit.

British New Guinea administrator Sir William MacGregor eventually organized an expedition into the mountains in 1889.

MacGregor approached from the west through the Vanapa River region.

During the expedition, his party crossed difficult terrain and climbed other mountains before finally reaching the highest summit.

On June 11, 1889, MacGregor reached the top.

In his later account to the Royal Geographical Society, MacGregor stated that he had ascended the mountain and named it Mount Victoria, after Queen Victoria.

The expedition became one of the best-known early colonial journeys into Papua New Guinea’s mountainous interior.

Modern descriptions of the climb should nevertheless distinguish between the first recorded European ascent and the much longer relationship Indigenous Papuan communities had with the surrounding landscape.
