The Sudirman Range, or Barisan Sudirman, is a rugged chain of mountains in the central highlands of western New Guinea, within Indonesia’s Central Papua Province. It forms the western and highest part of the broader Maoke Mountains, which belong to the great Central Cordillera extending across the island of New Guinea.

The range contains Puncak Jaya, also known as Carstensz Pyramid, which rises to 4,884 meters (16,024 feet). It is the highest mountain in Indonesia, the highest summit on New Guinea, the highest island peak on Earth, and—under the geographic definition commonly used by mountaineers—the highest mountain in Oceania.

The Sudirman Range is remarkable not only for its elevation but also for its combination of equatorial rainforest, steep limestone walls, alpine grasslands, glacial landforms, and rapidly disappearing tropical ice. 📍 Location and Geographic Setting

The Sudirman Range rises near the western end of New Guinea’s immense central mountain belt. The mountains occupy part of the interior of Central Papua, north of the humid southern lowlands and the city of Timika.

The broader Maoke mountain system continues eastward through other highland ranges, including the Jayawijaya Mountains. Names for these ranges have sometimes been applied inconsistently, particularly on older maps, but the Sudirman Range is generally understood as the western section containing Puncak Jaya and the Carstensz massif.

Its landscape is exceptionally steep. Sharp ridges and high plateaus are divided by deeply cut valleys, glacial basins, limestone cliffs and river systems flowing toward the northern and southern lowlands. The difference between the tropical forests below and the bare alpine summits above creates one of the greatest ecological elevation gradients in the tropics.

Although Indonesia is normally classified as a Southeast Asian country, New Guinea lies east of the traditional biogeographic boundary separating Asian and Australasian wildlife. For this reason, the Sudirman Range is commonly included in Oceania in physical geography and mountaineering.

The highest part of the range contains several closely connected summits. Rankings can be confusing because some are subpeaks rather than independent mountains, historical elevations included glacial ice, and many measurements come from surveys of extremely remote terrain.

Puncak Jaya is the only undisputed high point of the range. Sumantri and Carstensz East are sometimes treated as separate climbing objectives, but both stand close to the Carstensz massif and have limited prominence compared with Puncak Jaya.

Ngga Pulu demonstrates why the region’s elevation lists require care. Its ice-covered summit reportedly reached approximately 4,907 meters during the 1936 Carstensz Expedition, making it higher than Puncak Jaya at that time. As its glacier thinned and retreated, its surface elevation fell substantially; The current elevation is at approximately 4,740 meters.

Puncak Jaya is the defining summit of the Sudirman Range. Its steep, pale-gray limestone walls rise above a landscape that appears more like a high alpine massif than an equatorial island.

At 4,884 meters, it is:

  • The highest mountain in Indonesia
  • The highest point on New Guinea
  • The highest mountain on any island
  • The highest summit between the Himalayas and the Andes
  • One of the most geographically isolated major mountains on Earth

Unlike Mount Kosciuszko in mainland Australia, Puncak Jaya requires technical climbing. Its normal route involves steep rock, fixed ropes, exposed traverses and gaps along the summit ridge.

🪨 Geology and Formation

The Sudirman Range formed within one of the world’s most geologically complicated collision zones. New Guinea lies where the northward-moving Australian Plate interacts with Pacific-region plates and smaller crustal blocks.

Compression, folding, faulting and uplift raised rocks that had originally accumulated beneath ancient seas. UNESCO describes the central mountains as folded and metamorphosed marine sediments of Cretaceous and Eocene age, with particularly rugged karst limestone terrain in the highlands. Puncak Jaya and neighboring peaks are largely composed of limestone rather than volcanic rock. This distinguishes them from many of Indonesia’s other famous mountains, including Mount Kerinci, Mount Semeru and Mount Rinjani.

Glaciers also helped sculpt the highest terrain. Cirques, moraines, glacial lakes and U-shaped valleys record periods when much larger ice fields covered the central mountains. These landforms remain visible even as the last modern glaciers approach extinction.

đź§Š The Vanishing Equatorial Glaciers

The Sudirman Range has long been famous for supporting glaciers only a few degrees south of the equator. Their existence was so unexpected that European audiences initially doubted early reports of snow-covered mountains in tropical New Guinea.

The ice is now disappearing rapidly. A peer-reviewed study published in 2025 found that the total glacier area around Puncak Jaya had declined by more than 99 percent since approximately 1850. The remaining ice covered only about 0.165 square kilometers in 2024, representing a decline of roughly 65 percent since 2018. Researchers concluded that the glaciers will probably disappear around 2030 if the recent retreat rate continues. (Copernicus TC)

Several former ice bodies have already vanished, including the Meren Glacier and Southwall Glacier. The retreat has altered more than the appearance of the mountains. It has changed summit elevations, exposed new rock and affected the relative height and prominence of peaks such as Ngga Pulu and Sumantri.

🌧️ Climate and Elevation Zones

The Sudirman Range rises from one of the wettest tropical regions on Earth. Moist air from the surrounding seas is forced upward by the mountains, producing frequent cloud, rain and snowfall at the greatest elevations.

Seasonal differences are less pronounced than in temperate mountain ranges. Rain can occur throughout the year, and even relatively drier periods remain unpredictable. At high elevations, freezing temperatures, sleet, fog, strong winds and rapid weather changes can occur despite the range’s equatorial location.

The landscape changes dramatically with altitude:

  • Low elevations: tropical rainforest, swamps and river valleys
  • Montane zone: mossy forest, tree ferns and cloud forest
  • Subalpine zone: grassland, bogs, shrubs and heath vegetation
  • Alpine zone: exposed limestone, scree, tundra-like vegetation and glacial landforms
  • Highest summits: bare rock and small remnants of ice

🌿 Flora and Fauna

The Sudirman highlands are part of one of the richest centers of biodiversity and endemism in the Asia-Pacific region. Isolation, extreme topography and rapidly changing elevation zones have allowed highly specialized plants and animals to evolve.

Notable wildlife of the greater mountain and Lorentz landscape includes:

  • Dingiso, a rare high-elevation tree kangaroo
  • Long-beaked and short-beaked echidnas
  • Alpine woolly rats

Plants also change sharply with elevation. Tropical forest gives way to southern-beech woodland, tree-fern communities, alpine grassland, bog vegetation and small cushion plants adapted to cold, wet and wind-exposed conditions.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Indigenous Peoples and Cultural Landscape

The Sudirman Range should not be viewed as an empty wilderness. Its valleys, forests and mountains form part of the ancestral territories of Indigenous Papuan peoples.

The Amungme have particularly strong cultural connections to the Puncak Jaya region. Other peoples living within the wider central highland and Lorentz landscape include Dani, Moni and Nduga communities, while Kamoro, Sempan and Asmat communities occupy lower and southern areas.

Local names, travel routes, hunting grounds and cultural traditions existed long before European exploration. UNESCO recognizes cultural diversity as an important component of the wider Lorentz landscape and identifies several Indigenous groups whose traditional territories fall within or near the protected area. đź§­ Exploration and Naming History

In 1623, Dutch navigator Jan Carstenszoon reported seeing snowy mountains while sailing off New Guinea’s southern coast. The surrounding peaks were later associated with his name and appeared on maps as the Carstensz Mountains or Carstensz Toppen.

The mountains were also called the Snow Mountains and, during the Dutch colonial period, the Nassau Range. The modern Indonesian name honors General Sudirman, the first commander-in-chief of Indonesia’s armed forces and a major figure in the country’s independence struggle.

A Dutch expedition led by Anton Colijn, Jean Jacques Dozy and Frits Wissel entered the high glacial terrain in 1936. The group reached Ngga Pulu and East Carstensz Top, but not the rocky summit now recognized as Puncak Jaya.

The first confirmed ascent of Puncak Jaya occurred in 1962, when Heinrich Harrer, Philip Temple, Russell Kippax and Albertus Huizenga reached the summit.

🥾 Hiking and Climbing

The Sudirman Range is not a conventional hiking destination. Most of its interior lacks developed trails, mountain huts, public roads and dependable rescue infrastructure.

Puncak Jaya is a serious technical mountaineering objective. Although it is lower than the other principal Seven Summits, the normal route requires rock-climbing ability, confidence on fixed ropes, rappelling skills and experience moving through exposed terrain.

Reaching the mountain can be more complicated than the summit climb itself. Approaches have historically involved either helicopter transportation or multi-day journeys through rainforest, mud, rivers and highland communities.
