Breithorn is a prominent 3,780-meter (12,402-foot) mountain in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. Rising high above the upper Lauterbrunnen Valley, it forms part of the rugged alpine divide between the cantons of Bern and Valais and separates the Lauterbrunnental on its northern side from the Lötschental to the south.

The mountain is often called the Lauterbrunnen Breithorn or Lauterbrunner Breithorn to distinguish it from several other Alpine summits carrying the same name. Most famously, another Breithorn rises above Zermatt near the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.

Although the Lauterbrunnen Breithorn does not reach 4,000 meters, it is an impressive mountain. 📍 Where Is the Lauterbrunnen Breithorn?

The Breithorn stands in the western-central portion of the Bernese Alps, on the border between the Swiss cantons of Bern and Valais. Its northern slopes overlook the upper reaches of the famous Lauterbrunnen Valley, while its southern side descends toward the Lötschental.

The mountain lies in a spectacular chain of high summits extending westward from the Jungfrau region. Nearby mountains include the Grosshorn, Mittaghorn and Tschingelhorn, all part of the glaciated landscape forming the head of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

From northern viewpoints, the Breithorn appears particularly formidable. Its broad summit rises above a steep wall broken by dark rock ribs, gullies and lingering snowfields. The contrast between this high alpine terrain and the green valley far below helps make the mountain one of the defining peaks at the southern end of Lauterbrunnen.

🏔️ Why Is It Called Breithorn?

The German name Breithorn translates approximately as “broad horn.” It is a descriptive name that appears several times throughout the Alps.

This repetition can cause considerable confusion. The best-known Breithorn is the 4,000-meter mountain on the Swiss-Italian border near Zermatt. There is also another Breithorn overlooking the Lötschental near Blatten.

For this reason, the 3,780-meter mountain is usually identified more precisely as the Lauterbrunnen Breithorn, Lauterbrunner Breithorn or Breithorn (Lauterbrunnen).

Despite sharing a name, the Lauterbrunnen peak is geographically separate from the much higher Breithorn near the Matterhorn.

📏 Elevation, Prominence and Isolation

Modern Swiss topographic data places the summit of the Lauterbrunnen Breithorn at almost exactly 3,780 meters, with high-resolution elevation measurements giving approximately 3,779.5 meters.

Its topographic prominence is about 463 meters (1,519 feet). This means the mountain rises significantly above the highest saddle connecting it to higher terrain, although it remains closely integrated into the surrounding Bernese Alpine crest.

The mountain has approximately 4.27 kilometers (2.65 miles) of topographic isolation. Its nearest higher neighbor is the Mittaghorn, which lies to the east-northeast.

The key col used when calculating the Breithorn’s prominence is the Schmadrijoch, a high glaciated saddle at roughly 3,317 meters.

🧭 Between Lauterbrunnen and Lötschental

One of the most interesting geographical features of the Breithorn is its position directly between two very different Alpine valleys.

To the north lies the Lauterbrunnental, a spectacular glacial valley known for its towering cliffs, waterfalls and views toward the high Bernese Alps. The upper valley becomes progressively wilder beyond the settled areas, eventually narrowing into a landscape dominated by glaciers and enormous mountain walls.

South of the summit lies the Lötschental, one of the major valleys of the Valais. Surrounded by high mountains and glaciers, the valley preserves a strong Alpine character and provides access to numerous peaks along the main Bernese Alpine divide.

The summit ridge of the Breithorn therefore forms part of an important watershed. Water draining north eventually enters the Rhine basin, while water draining south belongs to the Rhône drainage system.

🧊 Glaciers Around Breithorn

Glaciers have played a major role in shaping the mountain.

On the Lauterbrunnen side, the Breithorn Glacier occupies the high basin between the Breithorn and Tschingelhorn. Historical accounts describe heavily crevassed sections and large seracs descending toward the upper valley.

The Wetterlücke, a high pass west of the summit, has traditionally provided one of the main points of access to the mountain. Early climbers approached through heavily glaciated terrain before gaining the rock and snow ridges leading toward the summit.

On the southern side, glaciers descend toward the Lötschental. These glaciers and snowfields connect the Breithorn with a much larger high-alpine system extending toward neighboring peaks.

As elsewhere in the Alps, glacier conditions have changed substantially since the nineteenth century. Routes described by early climbers may therefore differ considerably from their modern equivalents because crevasses, exposed rock and glacier margins continually change.

🪨 Geology

The Lauterbrunnen Breithorn belongs to the complex geological landscape of the Bernese Alps, where enormous tectonic forces associated with the formation of the Alps lifted deeply buried rocks to high elevations.

Historical Swiss Alpine Club descriptions of the mountain mention hornblende-bearing rocks together with schistose formations, including mica-rich material. These rocks form the steep ribs and walls visible on the northern side of the peak.

The mountain’s present appearance has also been strongly shaped by glaciation. During colder periods, much larger glaciers filled the surrounding valleys and carved the deep U-shaped landscapes seen today.

Freeze-thaw weathering continues to break exposed rock apart. Water penetrates fractures, freezes and expands, gradually loosening blocks from the mountain. Rockfall therefore remains a natural feature of the steep Alpine environment.

Snow, avalanches and moving glacier ice further modify the landscape, ensuring that the mountain continues to change even on human timescales.

🧗 The First Ascent of Breithorn

The Lauterbrunnen Breithorn was first climbed on July 31, 1865, during the great nineteenth-century era of exploration in the Alps.

Swiss geologist and mountaineer Edmund von Fellenberg approached the mountain with guides Peter Michel, Peter Egger, Peter Inäbnit and Johann Bischoff.

The party left Trachsellauenen on July 30 and traveled toward the upper Lauterbrunnen Valley. They eventually established a bivouac near the Wetterlücke before beginning their summit attempt the following morning.

Their climb followed the western side of the mountain toward the summit ridge.

At approximately 10:40 a.m., von Fellenberg and his guides reached the top, completing the first recorded ascent.

🏃 A Race to the Summit

The first ascent became particularly memorable because another climbing party was approaching the mountain at almost exactly the same time.

British mountaineers James John Hornby and Thomas Henry Philpott, accompanied by the famous guides Christian Almer and Christian Lauener, were also attempting the peak.

The British party approached by a different route, traveling over the Petersgrat and around the Tschingelhorn before climbing toward the summit.

The two groups became aware of one another on the mountain, effectively creating a race for the unclimbed summit.

Von Fellenberg’s Swiss party arrived first. Hornby, Philpott, Almer and Lauener reached the summit only about five to ten minutes later.

Both parties therefore played a role in the mountain’s historic first-ascent day, but the honor of reaching the summit first belongs to Edmund von Fellenberg and his four guides.

The episode provides a fascinating glimpse into the competitive atmosphere of early Alpine exploration, when many major summits were still unclimbed and British and Swiss mountaineers sometimes found themselves pursuing the same objectives.

🧗 Edmund von Fellenberg

Edmund von Fellenberg was one of the important Swiss mountaineering pioneers of the nineteenth century.

Born into a prominent Bernese family, he combined an interest in geology with a passion for Alpine exploration. He was also among the founding members of the Swiss Alpine Club, established in 1863.

His climbing career included numerous first ascents and new routes throughout the Bernese Alps. Only a week after reaching the Breithorn, von Fellenberg also participated in the first ascent of the Gross Grünhorn.

The Lauterbrunnen Breithorn ascent is particularly representative of his approach to climbing. The expedition combined scientific curiosity, exploration and the growing sporting competitiveness that characterized the golden and early silver ages of Alpine mountaineering.

🧗 Historic Routes

The earliest ascents of the Breithorn generally approached from the Wetterlücke, the saddle between the Breithorn and Tschingelhorn.

From there, climbers could gain the western side or west ridge before continuing toward the summit. Historical accounts describe both rock climbing and steep snow terrain.

Other routes were subsequently developed from the Lötschental side and along different ridges and faces.

The northeast ridge from the Schmadrijoch provides another important line on the mountain. Reaching the ridge involves glacier travel before climbers follow a combination of snow and rock toward the summit.

The north side of the mountain is considerably steeper and has attracted more technically ambitious climbers. Direct routes on the north face belong to a very different category from the traditional ridge approaches.

🧗 The North Face

The north face is the side of the Breithorn most visible from Lauterbrunnen.

It rises approximately 1,200 meters above the glaciated terrain beneath it and is composed of steep rock ribs interrupted by snowfields, gullies and ice.

From a distance, the face gives the mountain an almost wall-like appearance. Nineteenth-century descriptions compared the peak to an upright slab supported by narrow ridges on either side.

The face eventually became an objective for twentieth-century alpinists searching for more direct and difficult routes. Climbers completed direct ascents during the development of increasingly technical mountaineering in the Bernese Oberland.

Although the Breithorn’s elevation is moderate compared with the great 4,000-meter peaks of Switzerland, its north face demonstrates why elevation alone is a poor measure of climbing difficulty.

🥾 Can You Hike to Breithorn?

Breithorn is not a hiking summit.

An ascent requires glacier travel and technical mountaineering skills. Depending on the route and conditions, climbers may encounter crevasses, steep snow, exposed ridges and sections of rock climbing.

A rope, crampons, ice axe and appropriate glacier-rescue equipment are normally part of a mountaineering ascent. Climbers must also understand route finding, snow conditions and weather hazards.

Visitors who simply want to see the mountain do not need to climb it. Excellent views are possible from parts of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and surrounding high trails.

The mountain’s dramatic north face makes it particularly impressive when seen from below, where nearly 3,000 vertical meters separate portions of the valley system from the surrounding high summits.

⚠️ Climbing Hazards

Glaciers represent one of the principal hazards on the Breithorn. Crevasses can be hidden beneath snow, and conditions on glacier crossings may change substantially through the summer.

Avalanches are another concern, particularly after heavy snowfall or rapid warming. Cornices can develop along exposed ridges, creating additional danger.

Rockfall becomes more important on routes involving the mountain’s steep faces. Warm temperatures, melting ice and freeze-thaw cycles can loosen rock from cliffs and gullies.

Weather in the Bernese Alps can deteriorate rapidly. Clouds may obscure ridges and glaciers, while storms bring snow, wind and poor visibility even during the summer climbing season.

The relatively accessible setting of the Swiss Alps should not create a false sense of security. Breithorn remains a serious alpine mountain requiring appropriate experience and preparation.

The Breithorn experiences a cold high-alpine climate.

Snow can fall at summit elevations at almost any time of year, while winter brings deep snow, severe cold and powerful winds. Much of the upper mountain remains snow-covered through the summer.

Conditions often change rapidly as weather systems interact with the high Bernese Alpine crest. Moist air forced upward over the mountains can produce clouds and precipitation even when surrounding valleys remain relatively clear.

Summer provides the most common mountaineering window, particularly when snow has consolidated and glacier conditions are favorable.

Early starts are common because colder morning temperatures may produce firmer snow and more stable glacier conditions. Afternoon warming can soften snow, weaken bridges over crevasses and increase rockfall.

🌱 Flora and Fauna

Little vegetation can survive on the summit and highest ridges of Breithorn, where exposed rock, snow and ice dominate the landscape.

Descending toward the surrounding valleys reveals a much richer Alpine ecosystem. Alpine meadows support grasses, gentians and other flowering plants adapted to short growing seasons and long snowy winters.

Lower slopes contain coniferous forest, with spruce and larch among the characteristic trees of the region.

Wildlife in the wider Bernese Alps includes Alpine ibex, chamois, marmots and red foxes. Mountain birds such as golden eagles, bearded vultures and Alpine choughs can also be encountered.

The transition from green valley meadows to barren glacier and summit terrain occurs over a relatively short horizontal distance, creating one of the striking ecological features of the Lauterbrunnen region.

🔭 Views From the Summit

In clear weather, the summit of Breithorn provides an extensive panorama across the Bernese Alps and Valais.

Nearby glaciated mountains dominate the foreground, while major peaks such as the Jungfrau rise farther east. To the southwest, the distinctive pyramid of the Bietschhorn is one of the outstanding mountains of the Lötschental region.

Farther south, the great high peaks of Valais can appear along the horizon when atmospheric conditions are favorable.

The summit also provides a dramatic perspective down toward the Lauterbrunnen Valley on one side and the Lötschental on the other, emphasizing the mountain’s position directly on the divide between two of Switzerland’s great Alpine landscapes.

Anyone researching Breithorn should be aware that search results frequently refer to a completely different mountain.

The famous Breithorn near Zermatt rises above the Swiss-Italian border to more than 4,160 meters. It belongs to the Pennine Alps and lies between the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.

That Breithorn is considerably higher and is one of the most frequently climbed 4,000-meter peaks in the Alps.

The Lauterbrunnen Breithorn, by contrast, is the 3,780-meter Bernese Alpine mountain separating the Lauterbrunnen Valley and Lötschental.

The two mountains are separated by a substantial distance and should be treated as entirely different peaks.
