📍 Major Mountain Regions of Cuba
Sierra Maestra
The Sierra Maestra forms Cuba’s highest and most imposing mountain system. It extends along the southeastern coast through portions of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo provinces.
Its steep southern slopes rise dramatically above the Caribbean Sea, while its northern slopes descend toward the Cauto Valley. The range contains Cuba’s only mountains exceeding 1,500 meters and almost every summit in the national top ten.
The Sierra Maestra is commonly divided into several sections, including the Turquino area, the Sierra de la Gran Piedra, and the Sierra de Boniato. Pico Turquino, Pico Cuba, Pico Suecia, and several neighboring summits form a densely forested high-elevation cluster in the western part of the range.

Pico Turquino
Pico Turquino, officially known as Pico Real del Turquino, is Cuba’s highest mountain. It rises within Turquino National Park near the boundary between Granma and Santiago de Cuba provinces.

These rocks include serpentine, gabbro, basalt, and related materials that were pushed onto the edge of the land during past tectonic collisions. The northern approach commonly begins near Santo Domingo in Granma Province. Transport continues toward Alto del Naranjo, from which the trail enters the high forest.
The route climbs and descends repeatedly along the ridge rather than ascending continuously. Multi-day itineraries may use simple mountain accommodation around Aguada de Joaquín before continuing toward the summit.
Pico Turquino from Las Cuevas
The southern route begins near the Caribbean coast around Las Cuevas. It starts much closer to sea level and gains elevation rapidly through hot, steep terrain.
A traverse that ascends from one side and descends the other reveals the dramatic contrast between the northern valleys and the abrupt Caribbean-facing slopes. Arrangements, trail access, transport, guide requirements, and overnight facilities should always be confirmed locally.

Comandancia de la Plata was the principal rebel headquarters in the Sierra Maestra during the Cuban Revolution. The forest route visits preserved structures hidden among the mountains.

Topes de Collantes
