Tanzania contains some of Africa’s most dramatic and varied mountain landscapes. The country is best known for Mount Kilimanjaro, whose 5,895-meter summit is the highest point in Africa. However, Tanzania’s mountainous terrain extends far beyond Kilimanjaro.

Northern Tanzania is shaped by the volcanoes, escarpments, calderas, and fault valleys of the East African Rift. Eastern Tanzania contains the ancient, forest-covered Eastern Arc Mountains, while the south rises into the volcanic peaks and plateaus of the Southern Highlands. Along Lake Tanganyika, the remote Mahale Mountains descend steeply toward one of the deepest lakes in the world.

These different mountain regions support alpine deserts, montane rainforests, grasslands, crater lakes, waterfalls, endemic wildlife, and several of Tanzania’s most important protected areas.

📍 Where Are the Mountains in Tanzania?

Tanzania’s mountains are distributed across several distinct regions.

The country’s highest volcanic peaks rise in the north near the border with Kenya. This region includes Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Mount Longido, Mount Gelai, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and the Crater Highlands.

Farther east, the Eastern Arc Mountains form a broken chain of ancient forested blocks. They include the Pare, Usambara, Nguu, Nguru, Ukaguru, Uluguru, Rubeho, and Udzungwa mountains.

The Southern Highlands surround Mbeya and extend toward the borders with Malawi and Mozambique. Their landscapes include the Rungwe volcanic region, the Poroto Mountains, the Kipengere Range, the Livingstone Mountains, and high plateaus such as Kitulo.

This table includes Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira as separate named volcanic summits within the Kilimanjaro massif. A ranking limited to independent mountains with substantial topographic prominence would produce a different order.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is generally listed at approximately 2,960–2,962 meters. Because its reported elevation varies slightly among sources, it may replace Mount Rungwe in tenth place in some rankings.

🌋 Kilimanjaro and the Northern Volcanoes

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s highest and most internationally recognized mountain. The massif consists of three principal volcanic centers:

  • Kibo, the youngest and highest cone, contains Uhuru Peak.
  • Mawenzi is a deeply eroded, jagged cone east of Kibo.
  • Shira is the remnant of an older volcano whose collapse helped form the broad Shira Plateau.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru rises immediately north of Arusha and forms the centerpiece of Arusha National Park. At 4,565 meters, it is Tanzania’s second-highest independent mountain.

Meru is a large stratovolcano with a striking horseshoe-shaped crater created by the partial collapse of its eastern side. Its summit route follows forested slopes, open heath, volcanic ridges, and the edge of the crater wall.

Although sometimes treated merely as preparation for Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a major mountain expedition in its own right. Its steep ridge walking, wildlife-rich lower slopes, and views toward Kilimanjaro make it one of Tanzania’s finest climbs.

Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai rises south of Lake Natron in the Gregory Rift. Its Maasai name is commonly translated as “Mountain of God.”

It is one of the world’s most unusual volcanoes because it is the only volcano known to have produced carbonatite lava during recorded history. This lava has a different chemical composition from the silica-rich lava associated with most volcanoes.

Ol Doinyo Lengai remains active. Its steep slopes, loose volcanic material, crater hazards, extreme heat at lower elevations, and possibility of renewed activity make it a considerably more hazardous climb than an ordinary hiking peak.

The Crater Highlands

The Crater Highlands lie between Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, and the Serengeti plains. This region contains a concentration of volcanic mountains, craters, calderas, and high plateaus.

  • Loolmalasin, the highest mountain in the Crater Highlands
  • Oldeani, on the western side of the Ngorongoro region

The Eastern Arc Mountains are geologically much older than Tanzania’s northern volcanoes. They consist mainly of ancient crystalline rocks that were uplifted and repeatedly weathered over millions of years.

Moist air from the Indian Ocean brings rain to their eastern slopes. Their isolated forest blocks have acted like ecological islands, allowing plants and animals to evolve separately from populations on neighboring mountains.

Usambara Mountains

The Usambara Mountains rise in northeastern Tanzania near the town of Lushoto. They are divided into the West Usambara and East Usambara ranges.

The West Usambaras are known for accessible village walks, cultivated hillsides, forest reserves, and viewpoints overlooking the Maasai Steppe. The East Usambaras contain exceptionally rich tropical forests but receive fewer general visitors.

Uluguru Mountains

Udzungwa Mountains

The Udzungwa Mountains form the largest and one of the highest blocks of the Eastern Arc. Much of their most important habitat is protected within Udzungwa Mountains National Park.

Tanzania’s mountains were not created by a single geological process. Their differences help explain the country’s extraordinary range of landscapes.

Northern volcanoes such as Kilimanjaro, Meru, Gelai, Kitumbeine, and Ol Doinyo Lengai are associated with the East African Rift. As the continental crust has stretched and fractured, magma has risen through weakened zones to create volcanoes, lava fields, craters, and calderas.

The Eastern Arc Mountains are much older. Their underlying rocks date largely from the Precambrian, but later uplift and faulting raised them into distinct mountain blocks. Long periods of erosion produced rounded summits, steep valleys, and deep weathered soils.

Southern Tanzania contains both volcanic and fault-generated terrain. The Rungwe region contains volcanic centers, while the Livingstone Mountains form part of the steep escarpment bordering the Lake Malawi branch of the rift.

Tanzania’s mountains create cooler and wetter environments than many surrounding plains. Vegetation changes considerably with altitude, slope direction, and rainfall.

Kilimanjaro and Meru contain several broad ecological zones. Their lower slopes include farmland and woodland, followed by montane forest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and sparsely vegetated summit terrain. Giant groundsels, lobelias, heathers, and tussock grasses are characteristic of some higher zones.

The Eastern Arc Mountains support moist forests with exceptionally high levels of endemism. Certain frogs, chameleons, birds, insects, and plants occur only on one mountain block or within a small part of the chain.

Kilimanjaro Routes

Established approaches to Uhuru Peak include the Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Umbwe, and Northern Circuit routes.

Longer itineraries generally provide more time for acclimatization. Reaching a high camp quickly does not guarantee a successful summit, and altitude sickness can affect even strong and experienced hikers.

Mount Meru Route

The standard Mount Meru trek normally takes three or four days. It begins in Arusha National Park, passes through wildlife habitat and forest, and follows the crater rim toward Socialist Peak.

Park procedures and wildlife conditions mean that ascents are organized under official guidance rather than undertaken as unrestricted independent hikes.

Udzungwa Hiking

Udzungwa Mountains National Park provides routes ranging from relatively short waterfall walks to multi-day mountain journeys. Sanje Waterfalls is the best-known destination, while longer routes reach remote forests and higher summits.

Usambara Village Walks

The Usambara Mountains offer some of Tanzania’s most approachable lower-altitude hiking. Trails around Lushoto connect villages, farms, forests, waterfalls, and viewpoints.

Remote Mountain Expeditions

Mount Hanang, Loolmalasin, Mount Rungwe, the Livingstone Mountains, and many Eastern Arc summits receive far fewer hikers. Trails may be indistinct, transportation may be difficult, and local permission or guide arrangements may be necessary.

  • June to October: The main dry season and the most popular trekking period.

March through May typically brings the heaviest rains. Trails may become muddy, mountain forests can be extremely wet, and cloud cover may reduce visibility.

November often brings shorter rains, although weather patterns vary from year to year. The Eastern Arc and Southern Highlands can remain wet outside the main rainy seasons because local mountains create their own weather.

Temperatures fall rapidly with elevation. Freezing conditions, strong winds, snow, hail, and sudden storms are possible on Kilimanjaro even when the surrounding lowlands are warm.
