Momhil Sar (Mumhail Sar)

Momhil Sar is a 7,414-meter (24,324-foot) mountain in the Hispar Muztagh of the Karakoram in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Also known by the Wakhi pronunciation Mumhail Sar, it rises immediately northwest of Trivor in an immense landscape of glaciers, high ridges, avalanche-swept faces, and neighboring 7,000-meter summits.

The mountain is easy to overlook on a map filled with Karakoram giants. Distaghil Sar rises to 7,885 meters only a short distance away, Kunyang Chhish exceeds 7,800 meters farther southwest, and Trivor reaches about 7,577 meters immediately beside Momhil Sar. Yet a summit of more than 7,400 meters would be an extraordinary geographical landmark almost anywhere else on Earth.

Momhil Sar’s climbing history is even more remarkable than its height. An Austrian team from Styria made the first ascent on June 29, 1964, after enduring weeks of some of the worst weather experienced during that Karakoram season. The five climbers originally planned to follow the east ridge from the high col between Momhil Sar and Trivor, but steep rock, enormous snow cornices, and repeated storms forced them to reconsider.

Their successful solution was daring. From Camp III at roughly 6,500 meters, they crossed a steep ramp through the southeast face, climbed among seracs and avalanche gullies, gained the southwest ridge late in the day, and followed an exposed final snow crest to the summit. Hanns Schell, Rudolf Pischinger, Horst Schindlbacher, Leo Schlömmer, and Rolf Widerhofer all reached the top together at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The summit day lasted about 22 hours by the time the climbers returned to Camp III.

Despite this early success, Momhil Sar never became a regularly climbed mountain. Expeditions returned during the 1980s and early 1990s to attempt the west buttress, east ridge, northeast ridge, and high connecting ridge from Trivor, but deep snow, avalanches, bad weather, illness, and difficult ice repeatedly stopped them.

The result is one of the quietest major summits in the Hispar Muztagh. More than sixty years after the first ascent, Momhil Sar remains a serious expedition mountain where historical route descriptions provide guidance but little modern infrastructure exists.

🏔️ Where Is Momhil Sar?

Momhil Sar rises in the Hispar Muztagh, one of the great mountain groups of the Karakoram. The subrange lies north of the Hispar Glacier, east of the Hunza Valley, and south of the high Shimshal country.

The mountain stands immediately northwest of Trivor. Its western and southern glaciers drain toward the Nagar and Hispar systems, while its northeastern slopes feed the Momhil Glacier, which ultimately descends toward the Shimshal side of the range.

This position places Momhil Sar near the divide between two very different geographical approaches. The 1964 first ascenders came from Nagar on the southwestern side and traveled through the Gharesa, or Trivor, Glacier. Later expeditions also investigated the northern and northeastern sides through approaches associated with Passu and Shimshal.

The mountain is therefore deeply embedded within the Hispar Muztagh rather than standing on its outer edge.

Its close neighbors include Trivor, Lupghar Sar, Distaghil Sar, Bularung Sar, Malangutti Sar, and several high subsidiary summits.

📏 How High Is Momhil Sar?

The modern elevation commonly assigned to Momhil Sar is 7,414 meters (24,324 feet).

The first-ascent expedition climbed a mountain mapped at 24,090 feet, approximately 7,343 meters. That lower figure appears throughout the Himalayan Journal, Alpine Journal, and American Alpine Journal accounts from the 1960s.

Historical Karakoram survey records also used 24,090 feet.

Later topographic datasets increased the accepted height to around 7,414 meters.

A difference of more than 70 meters may sound substantial, but discrepancies of this kind occur on several remote Karakoram peaks. Early surveyors worked through triangulation and photogrammetry in extraordinarily difficult terrain, while modern measurements use satellite-derived elevation models and improved geodetic techniques.

For a modern profile, 7,414 meters is the most useful figure.

When discussing the 1964 expedition, however, the historical 24,090-foot measurement should be preserved because that was the mountain the climbers believed they were attempting.

📐 Prominence and Isolation

Momhil Sar has approximately 990 meters (3,248 feet) of clean topographic prominence in modern Peakbagger mapping.

Its topographic isolation is only about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

Both measurements reflect its position beside Trivor.

Trivor rises approximately 160 meters higher and is connected to Momhil Sar through very high glaciated terrain. Consequently, Momhil Sar is not an ultra-prominent peak despite reaching well above 7,000 meters.

The contrast between absolute elevation and prominence is especially striking here.

Momhil Sar is higher than almost every mountain outside Asia, yet its summit rises less than one vertical kilometer above the saddle connecting it to higher terrain.

This is common in the Hispar Muztagh, where enormous mountains stand tightly packed together within a landscape whose high passes may themselves exceed 6,000 meters.

👵 What Does Momhil Sar Mean?

The name Momhil has an unusually colorful interpretation in historical Karakoram literature.

The 1938 Karakoram Conference recorded Momhil as meaning approximately “the grazing-ground of the old woman.”

The conference added a humorous explanation: the terrain was supposedly so poor that only an old fool would think of grazing livestock there.

Modern descriptions of the Wakhi form Mumhail Sar give a related interpretation associated with a grandmother’s cattle pen or grazing place, with the mountain understood as the summit overlooking that pastoral landscape.

The element Sar is common throughout the Karakoram and surrounding mountain regions and refers to a summit or peak.

The name therefore reflects the human geography of the valleys rather than the ambitions of mountaineers.

Long before foreign expeditions arrived, these mountains were part of landscapes named and understood through grazing, travel, water, and local livelihood.

🗺️ Early Survey History

Momhil Sar appeared on early Survey of India mapping as Peak 7/42P.

The numerical designation illustrates the challenge faced by early cartographers working in the Karakoram. Many high summits had not yet been connected reliably with names used in surrounding valleys, while some mountains were visible from only a handful of difficult survey stations.

The Karakoram Conference of the 1930s attempted to standardize this confusing geographical record.

Its report explicitly preferred Momhil Sar to older meaningless survey labels.

The conference also described the mountain as the chief summit at the head of the Momhil Glacier.

By the time climbers began studying the mountain seriously, its name and basic geographical identity were therefore well established.

Its climbing route was not.

🏔️ The Hispar Muztagh

The Hispar Muztagh contains one of the world’s densest concentrations of 7,000-meter mountains.

Its highest summit is Distaghil Sar at 7,885 meters. Other giants include Kunyang Chhish, Kanjut Sar, Trivor, Pumari Chhish, Yutmaru Sar, Yukshin Gardan Sar, Lupghar Sar, and Momhil Sar.

The range is dominated by enormous glacier systems.

To the south lies the Hispar Glacier, while northern valleys drain toward Shimshal and the Hunza region.

Compared with the famous granite spires surrounding the Baltoro, Hispar Muztagh mountains generally appear broader and more heavily glaciated.

Their faces are frequently interrupted by seracs, icefalls, snowfields, and complicated ridge systems.

This can make them look less technically dramatic from a distance while creating very serious objective hazards for climbers.

Momhil Sar is a classic example.

🏔️ Momhil Sar and Trivor

Trivor is Momhil Sar’s most important geographical neighbor.

The two mountains stand only a few kilometers apart and are connected by a high saddle.

Trivor reaches approximately 7,577 meters, making it the higher mountain.

Its first ascent came in 1960, when British climber Wilfrid Noyce and American Jack Sadler reached the summit during a British-American expedition.

That ascent directly influenced Momhil Sar’s climbing history.

When the Austrians arrived in 1964, they followed the earlier Trivor route through the lower glacier system and established their highest camp beneath the col separating the two mountains.

Their original plan was to reach that col and continue along Momhil Sar’s east ridge.

The ridge proved much more difficult than anticipated.

Later climbers would again use the shared Trivor–Momhil ridge in attempts to connect the two summits.

🏔️ Momhil Sar and Distaghil Sar

Distaghil Sar rises northeast of Momhil Sar and reaches 7,885 meters, making it the highest mountain of the Hispar Muztagh.

The two peaks belong to the same great glaciated mountain complex but have very different levels of topographic independence.

Distaghil Sar has more than 2,500 meters of prominence.

Momhil Sar has roughly 990 meters.

The northwest and northeastern slopes of Momhil Sar also interact with glacier systems descending from the broader Distaghil–Trivor region.

This relationship became particularly important during later expeditions that entered from the Shimshal side.

In 1988, one German expedition originally planned to attempt Distaghil Sar from the north but abandoned the approach because the route was repeatedly swept by enormous ice avalanches. The climbers received permission to redirect their expedition toward Momhil Sar’s northeast ridge instead.

🏔️ Lupghar Sar

Lupghar Sar rises immediately north of Momhil Sar and reaches approximately 7,200 meters.

Its multiple high summits form another substantial component of the Momhil group.

The western glacier basin between Lupghar Sar and Momhil Sar contributes ice to the broader Gharesa and Hispar systems.

Lupghar Sar’s modern climbing history is also sparse, although its summit was reached in 1979.

The relationship between the peaks helps demonstrate how crowded the Hispar Muztagh is.

A 7,200-meter mountain can stand only a few kilometers from a 7,414-meter mountain, itself only a few kilometers from a 7,577-meter mountain.

Behind them rises a summit approaching 7,900 meters.

This density of high ground is one reason Momhil Sar receives relatively little international attention despite its extraordinary elevation.

🇦🇹 The 1964 Austrian Expedition

The first-ascent expedition came from the Styrian High-Touring Section of the Austrian Alpine Association.

The team consisted of five climbers who had spent years climbing together in the Alps:

  • Hanns Schell, expedition leader
  • Dr. Rudolf Pischinger
  • Horst Schindlbacher
  • Leo Schlömmer
  • Rolf Widerhofer

Their familiarity with one another became an important advantage.

Momhil Sar was a serious expedition, but it was not organized as a huge national siege involving dozens of climbers.

The core climbing team was only five people.

All five would eventually stand together on the summit.

🚙 From Nagar to Base Camp

The Austrians approached from Nagar, then the end of the practical jeep route for their expedition.

They traveled with dozens of porters through the Hispar and Gharesa valleys.

The approach was comparatively short by Karakoram standards. Contemporary reports suggested Base Camp could be reached from Nagar in roughly four days under ideal circumstances.

The expedition nevertheless suffered delays caused by porter difficulties.

Base Camp was established around 4,600 meters, or roughly 15,000 feet, on the Gharesa Glacier.

This was essentially the same general location used by the successful Trivor expedition four years earlier.

Above Base Camp, the Austrians began moving immediately through the glacier icefalls.

They intended to use the Trivor approach until reaching the high saddle separating the two mountains.

🎿 Skis in the Karakoram

One of the more unusual features of the expedition was its extensive use of skis.

The climbers carried six-foot skis and found them enormously valuable in the deep snow that characterized the 1964 season.

They reportedly used the skis as high as approximately 20,000 feet, or more than 6,000 meters.

The advantage was considerable.

Weeks of storms repeatedly buried the glacier and snow slopes beneath new powder.

Walking through this snow would have required constant exhausting trail breaking.

Skis allowed faster travel between camps and also provided quick descents during periods of reasonable snow conditions.

High-altitude ski use was still relatively unusual during the classic Karakoram expedition era, making Momhil Sar an interesting early example of skis being used as practical expedition equipment rather than for a summit descent.

🏕️ Camp I

Camp I was established at approximately 17,700 feet, or around 5,395 meters.

The approach involved glacier travel and icefall terrain.

Even at this comparatively low point on the mountain, the climbers faced the cumulative problems that would define the entire expedition: unstable weather, heavy snowfall, route breaking, and moving loads repeatedly between camps.

Snow conditions were unusually difficult.

Periods of sunshine were often interrupted by afternoon cloud and fresh snow.

The team rarely experienced more than a day or day and a half of genuinely good weather.

Every new storm partially erased previous progress.

The mountain was forcing the five climbers into a much longer expedition than they had originally anticipated.

🏕️ Camp II

Camp II stood at approximately 19,350 feet, or roughly 5,900 meters.

The Austrians could still use their skis in portions of the route around this elevation.

Above Camp II, a steeper snow slope climbed toward the high saddle between Momhil Sar and Trivor.

This terrain led toward Camp III.

Repeated storms made establishing the highest camp exceptionally difficult.

Tents were battered by wind and buried beneath blowing snow.

The expedition’s contemporary diary repeatedly describes the sound of avalanches descending around the glacier basin.

The climbers had initially imagined that Momhil Sar might require only about three weeks.

By late June, they had already spent roughly seven weeks in the mountains.

🏕️ Camp III

Camp III was finally established at approximately 21,300 feet, or about 6,490 meters, beneath the broad ice saddle connecting Momhil Sar with Trivor.

This location became the key to the entire climb.

From Camp III, the east ridge rose toward Momhil Sar.

The Austrians had always considered that ridge their intended route.

It appeared logical from photographs and maps.

When they actually reached it, the reality was much more severe.

Steep outward-sloping rock mixed with enormous cornices of unconsolidated snow.

The first serious attempt reached approximately 22,300 feet before the climbers encountered terrain requiring much more route preparation than expected.

The ridge would not yield quickly.

🧗 The East Ridge Fails

The Austrians spent approximately five hours fighting their way into the east ridge.

Sections of rock were steep and awkward.

Cornices piled several feet of loose snow across the narrow crest.

Some obstacles could not simply be bypassed.

The climbers had to clear snow away by hand before making any forward progress.

Eventually the team concluded that continuing the ridge would require several days of fixed-route preparation.

Weather was already deteriorating.

They descended.

This decision changed the history of Momhil Sar.

Had the ridge been slightly easier, the first ascent might have become a straightforward continuation of the Trivor route.

Instead, the climbers were forced onto the much more exposed southeast face.

🧊 The Southeast-Face Ramp

The alternative route crossed a huge snow-and-ice ramp through the southeast face.

The face itself rose roughly 4,500 feet.

A system of angled snow slopes offered a possible line from Camp III toward the southwest ridge high above.

The ramp was technically less difficult than the first section of the east ridge, but it was objectively more dangerous.

Below, the face broke into major serac cliffs.

Above, snowfields and ice formations threatened the route with avalanches.

Once committed high on the ramp, the climbers would have few good places to shelter.

The Austrians therefore tried to move across the most dangerous slopes during the coldest hours of the night and morning.

🧗 June 27 — Second Attempt

On June 27, the five climbers tried the southeast-face route seriously.

Leo Schlömmer and Horst Schindlbacher initially led.

The route crossed a large crevasse and climbed a snow nose before traversing exposed slopes around 45 to 50 degrees.

At one point, a small powder avalanche swept across the rope between climbers.

Higher up, the team entered the hanging glacier forming the continuation of the ramp.

Then mist closed in.

Visibility fell to only a few dozen meters.

The climbers were surrounded by seracs and avalanche tracks without being able to see enough terrain to navigate safely.

They considered digging a snow cave and waiting.

The consequences of fresh snowfall convinced them otherwise.

They retreated.

🌬️ The Weather Changes

That night, a strong northerly wind cleared the cloud.

The expedition had noticed that this dry airflow from the interior of Asia sometimes preceded a short period of improved weather.

For the first time in days, the climbers believed they might have one final opportunity.

They considered returning to the east ridge.

Snow banners blowing from its crest suggested terrible conditions.

The southeast-face ramp, despite its avalanche exposure, appeared to offer the better chance.

They would make one more attempt.

This time, speed was essential.

They planned to leave Camp III around midnight so that the avalanche-prone sections would be frozen as firmly as possible.

🌙 June 29, 1964

The five climbers left Camp III at approximately 12:30 a.m. on June 29.

Moonlight reflected from the snow strongly enough that headlamps were almost unnecessary.

Their earlier tracks remained partly visible.

The cold and wind had also packed some of the powder, making trail breaking easier than during the previous attempt.

By first light, they had already passed the terrain where they had turned around two days earlier.

Temperatures were around –20°C to –25°C.

The route climbed into new ground among ice towers, steep snow, and hanging glacier terrain.

Deep powder still slowed progress.

⚠️ Avalanche Terrain

One of the most unsettling features of the successful climb was how constantly the route interacted with avalanche terrain.

The lower ramp crossed the path of ice and snow avalanches.

Above, the climbers encountered layered snow where slab danger appeared greater than on some of the steeper slopes below.

The team had to judge whether continuing upward was safer than retreating across terrain that would soften later in the day.

They were now committed.

A major storm would have made retreat extremely dangerous.

This is one reason the first-ascent route should not be described simply as an easy snow climb.

The technical difficulty was moderate in many places.

The objective danger was not.

☀️ From Deep Cold to Intense Heat

As the sun rose, conditions changed dramatically.

The same climbers who had endured temperatures near –25°C during the night began suffering from intense reflected heat on the southeast face.

At more than 6,500 meters, there was little atmosphere to filter solar radiation.

Snow reflected light upward while the sun heated the face directly.

The climbers moved from severe cold into surprisingly oppressive warmth in only a few hours.

High-altitude mountaineering often produces this contradiction.

A route can expose climbers simultaneously to frostbite risk, dehydration, and severe solar radiation.

The Austrians continued breaking trail through deep snow toward the couloir leading to the southwest ridge.

🧗 The Final Couloir

By around midday, the team reached the bottom of the couloir that would finally bring them onto the southwest ridge.

The couloir was only several hundred feet high but proved exhausting.

Its lower section approached 50 degrees and was filled with deep, soft snow.

Progress became desperately slow.

Higher in the couloir, snow thinned almost completely from outward-sloping rock.

The leader now had to balance across delicate terrain with very little snow covering the slabs.

It took the climbers approximately three and a half hours to gain less than 700 feet.

Only late in the afternoon did they finally emerge onto the southwest ridge.

The summit was close.

🏔️ The Final Ridge

Only about 300 vertical feet remained.

From below, the final snow ridge appeared comparatively easy.

Once the climbers started upward, they discovered extraordinary exposure.

The snow crest was steep enough to remind Schindlbacher of the pitch of a roof.

Large cornices added another hazard.

Behind them, the southeast face fell toward the glacier.

On the opposite side, the mountain dropped toward the northern glacier systems.

After more than sixteen hours of climbing, fatigue was severe.

Nevertheless, all five continued together.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the ridge ended.

🏆 First Ascent — June 29, 1964

Hanns Schell, Rudolf Pischinger, Horst Schindlbacher, Leo Schlömmer, and Rolf Widerhofer reached the summit of Momhil Sar at approximately 4:30 p.m. on June 29, 1964.

The summit was a small snow crest.

For the expedition, one of the most satisfying parts of the achievement was that the entire five-person climbing team reached the top together.

The panorama extended across an enormous section of High Asia.

Peaks and glaciers were visible toward the Baltoro, Hindu Kush, Xinjiang, and Nanga Parbat.

The climbers remained on the summit for approximately an hour.

They could not linger indefinitely.

Camp III was still roughly 3,000 vertical feet below them.

Darkness was approaching.

🌙 The 22-Hour Summit Day

The descent required reversing the exposed summit ridge and rappelling or down-climbing the difficult couloir.

The day’s tracks were already being erased by wind.

Below the southwest ridge, the team still had to cross the hanging glacier and avalanche-exposed southeast ramp.

They completed much of this terrain in darkness.

By the time they returned to Camp III, the climbers had been moving for approximately 22 hours.

The statistic captures the scale of the route better than any individual climbing grade.

The summit stood less than 1,000 vertical meters above Camp III.

Yet terrain, altitude, deep snow, avalanche danger, and the indirect route transformed those final meters into an almost full-day-and-night undertaking.

🧗 What Was the First-Ascent Route?

The first-ascent route is sometimes mislabeled simply as the east ridge.

That is not correct.

The Austrians originally attempted the east ridge and abandoned it because the initial section contained difficult rock and enormous cornices.

Their successful line began from Camp III beneath the Trivor–Momhil col.

It traversed a long ramp across the southeast face, climbed through hanging glacier terrain, followed a steep couloir, and gained the southwest ridge very near the summit.

The final 300 feet followed that ridge to the top.

This distinction matters because several later teams returned specifically hoping to complete the east ridge that defeated the first ascenders.

🧭 Is the 1964 Route the Normal Route?

The southeast-face and southwest-ridge line is the historical successful route and therefore the closest Momhil Sar has to a normal route.

The word normal should be used cautiously.

There are no permanent fixed ropes.

There is no annual commercial expedition infrastructure.

The glaciers have changed substantially since 1964.

The southeast ramp is exposed to avalanches and seracs.

The first ascenders themselves were forced to retreat from the same line once before finding sufficiently good conditions.

A modern team would therefore need to treat the route as an independent expedition rather than simply following an established track.

Historical descriptions explain the strategy.

They do not make the mountain routine.

🇪🇸 The West Buttress Attempt

A Spanish team attempted the unclimbed west buttress around 1980.

The expedition included José Espona, Raúl Ferrara, Guillermo Fernández, and Antonio Luna.

They approached through the Gharesa Glacier and turned north into a tributary below Momhil Sar’s western side.

Base Camp stood around 4,600 meters.

The climbers established two camps on the buttress.

Progress required difficult ice climbing, including sections described as partly vertical.

The team reached a foresummit around 5,400 meters.

Then the expedition ran into medical problems.

Espona developed pneumonia, while Fernández suffered frostbite to his feet.

The climbers abandoned the route.

The west buttress remained unclimbed.

🇩🇪 The 1987 East-Ridge Attempt

A West German expedition returned in 1987 hoping to complete what it described as Momhil Sar’s east-ridge route.

The four-member team consisted of Heiko Irmisch, Rolf Steffens, Roland Köhler, and leader Günter Schulz.

They approached from Nagar through the Trivor Glacier.

Base Camp was established around 4,600 meters.

The climbers reached approximately 6,600 meters on July 8.

Then conditions deteriorated badly.

Three expedition members were caught in an avalanche while descending toward Camp III at approximately 6,350 meters.

All escaped.

Snow continued falling almost daily.

The resulting avalanche danger convinced the team that continuing was unreasonable.

🇩🇪 The 1988 Northeast Ridge

Another German expedition entered the wider Hispar Muztagh in 1988 with an entirely different goal.

Its original objective was the north side of Distaghil Sar.

The approach proved extraordinarily dangerous.

One or two huge powder avalanches reportedly swept a critical two-kilometer passage beneath the north faces of Trivor and neighboring mountains every day.

The expedition therefore received permission to redirect its efforts toward Momhil Sar.

The climbers attempted the northeast ridge.

They established camps around 5,800 and 6,600 meters and climbed sections of ice reaching approximately 60 degrees.

Bad weather eventually stopped them around 6,700 meters.

Unlike some other sides of Momhil Sar, the climbers considered the ridge itself relatively free from major objective danger.

It remained unclimbed.

🇯🇵 Trivor to Momhil Sar — 1991

One of the most ambitious later efforts came from a Japanese expedition led by Toshifumi Onuki.

The team’s plan involved both Trivor and Momhil Sar.

They approached from the Momhil Glacier side and climbed Momhil Sar’s east ridge until reaching the high shoulder where the ridge systems of the two mountains join.

From there, the Japanese moved toward Trivor.

After establishing multiple camps, Onuki and Atsushi Endo reached the summit of Trivor on August 30, 1991, completing only the second ascent of that mountain.

The expedition then turned back toward Momhil Sar.

Six climbers followed the high ridge toward its summit.

🇪🇸 Another 1991 Attempt

A separate Spanish expedition also attempted Momhil Sar during the 1991 season.
