📍 Location
Geisshorn is situated in the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland. It rises within the southern section of the Bernese Alps, north of the Rhône Valley and close to the enormous network of glaciers surrounding the Aletschhorn.

🪨 Geology
Geisshorn lies within one of the most geologically significant parts of the Alps. The principal uplift and compression that created the High Alps began tens of millions of years ago as tectonic plates converged. Older crystalline basement rocks were raised and exposed, while erosion gradually carved the mountains into their modern forms.
Glaciers have been especially important in shaping the terrain around Geisshorn. Repeated periods of glaciation widened valleys, sharpened ridges, excavated cirques, and transported enormous quantities of rock and sediment. 🌿 Flora & Fauna
The summit and upper slopes of Geisshorn lie within the nival zone, where snow, ice, exposed rock, and severe weather prevent most plants from surviving. Vegetation becomes more varied at lower elevations along the approaches to the mountain.
Alpine grasslands, dwarf shrubs, mosses, lichens, and hardy flowering plants occupy areas where soil has developed. Farther down the southern side of the Bernese Alps, European larch, Swiss stone pine, Scots pine, and other trees occur in suitable habitats.

Normal Route from the South
The Swiss Alpine Club describes the southern route from the Fusshornbiwak as the normal ascent. The route is graded PD, meaning “peu difficile” or “slightly difficult” on the Alpine scale.
From the bivouac at approximately 2,788 meters, climbers travel northeast toward the Driestgletscher. The route crosses glaciated terrain before reaching a gap in the Geissgrat near Point 3,130. Climbers then descend over unstable blocks toward the Zenbächengletscher and follow the glacier northwest toward the summit.
The upper snow or firn slope becomes steeper near the top, exceeding 30 degrees in places. Crevasses are an important hazard, particularly between approximately 3,400 and 3,550 meters.
The SAC estimates about three to four hours and roughly 950 meters of ascent from the bivouac to the summit under favorable conditions. The approach to the bivouac makes the complete journey considerably longer.
Southwest Ridge
The recorded first ascent was completed by W. A. B. Coolidge and guide Anton Walden on August 26, 1880, using the southwest ridge. Variations involving the Rotstock and the southwest ridge remain possible but can be significantly more technical than the normal route.
Descent
Most parties descend by reversing the ascent route. An alternative descent can lead toward Ze Bächu and the Great Aletsch Glacier, followed by a glacier crossing toward Märjela, Fiescheralp, or Riederalp. This variation is long and requires careful route planning.
