Shinall Mountain

Rising above the western edge of Little Rock, Shinall Mountain is the highest natural point in Pulaski County, Arkansas and one of the easternmost prominent summits of the Ouachita Mountains. Modern LiDAR measurements place its summit at approximately 1,069 feet (326 meters) above sea level.
Shinall Mountain is unusual among Arkansas peaks because wilderness is not what defines its summit. Instead, the mountaintop is crowned by a striking collection of radio, television, cellular, emergency-communications, and other transmission towers that can be seen from miles across the Little Rock metropolitan area.
The mountain also has an important geological story. Its slopes expose Pennsylvanian-age rocks of the Jackfork Formation, including shale, siltstone, and sandstone that were folded during the tectonic collision responsible for creating the Ouachitas. Shinall Mountain rises on the western edge of the Little Rock metropolitan area in Pulaski County.

The mountain lies beside the Chenal Valley area of western Little Rock and approximately three miles south-southwest of Pinnacle Mountain.

The variation does not mean the mountain has changed height. Instead, it reflects improvements in elevation measurement.
Older topographic maps frequently estimated summit elevations from contour lines, spot elevations, or older surveys. Modern LiDAR can model the ground surface with much greater precision, even on forested mountains.

Shinall Mountain is the highest natural point in Pulaski County.
That distinction can surprise visitors because nearby Pinnacle Mountain looks dramatically taller.
Pinnacle Mountain has a steep, sharply defined rocky profile and rises abruptly from the surrounding landscape. Shinall Mountain is broader and more rounded, making its actual height less obvious.
Modern measurements place Pinnacle Mountain at approximately 1,013 feet, meaning Shinall rises roughly 55β60 feet higher.
Pinnacle, however, has greater topographic prominence because its summit rises much more dramatically above its immediate surroundings.

ListsOfJohn uses a slightly more complicated parent system, associating Shinall Mountain with an unnamed 1,168-foot summit farther west in the same general Saline County mountain country.
For the Mountain Field Guide’s Nearest Higher Neighbor (NHN) field, Moss Mountain is the most useful named geographical reference.
This corrects an older identification of Crystal Mountain as Shinall’s NHN.
πͺ¨ Don’t Confuse the Two Crystal Mountains
There is an especially important naming issue around Shinall Mountain.
A small Crystal Mountain in Pulaski County lies immediately adjacent to the Shinall Mountain ridge. ListsOfJohn places that summit at only about 945 feet.
That is not the same mountain as the much higher Crystal Mountain (Arkansas) in Saline County.
The Saline County Crystal Mountain reaches approximately 1,729 feet and lies much farther west in Ouachita National Forest.

Shinall Mountain is a broader forested ridge whose shape is much less dramatic.
Yet Shinall is higher.
Interestingly, Peakbagger identifies Shinall Mountain as Pinnacle Mountain’s Nearest Higher Neighbor.
Pinnacle has an elevation of roughly 1,013 feet and approximately 679 feet of prominence, while Shinall reaches about 1,069 feet but has only around 526 feet of prominence.
So Shinall wins on elevation, while Pinnacle wins on prominence.

Shinall Mountain belongs to the eastern reaches of the Ouachita Mountains, one of the principal components of the U.S. Interior Highlands.
