Rising to approximately 2,655 meters (8,711 feet) in northern Slovakia, Gerlachov Peak, or Gerlachovský štít, is the highest mountain in Slovakia, the highest summit of the High Tatras, and the highest point in the entire Carpathian mountain system.
Known informally simply as Gerlach, the mountain stands completely within Slovakia rather than on the nearby Polish border. It rises from a southern side ridge of the High Tatras above the Velická and Batizovská valleys, where steep granite walls, glacial cirques, gullies, ribs, and high rocky ridges produce some of the most impressive relief in Central Europe.
Although Gerlach is much lower than the famous 4,000-meter summits of the Alps, its topographic statistics are extraordinary. Modern Slovak LiDAR analyzed by Peakbagger gives an elevation of 2,654.3 meters, approximately 2,349 meters of topographic prominence, and more than 510 kilometers of isolation. Its nearest higher terrain lies all the way in the Austrian Alps.
That makes Gerlach an ultra-prominent mountain and one of the most topographically independent summits in Europe.
The mountain has also played an unusually important role in Central European history. For centuries, people did not realize that Gerlach was the highest summit of the Tatras. Kriváň, Lomnický štít, and other mountains were all considered possible contenders until forester and surveyor Ľudovít Greiner identified Gerlach as the highest in 1838. Austrian military surveying later confirmed his conclusion.
Even the mountain’s first ascent remains surprisingly complicated. Ján Still of Nová Lesná has traditionally been credited with reaching the summit in 1834 with companions, but modern historical research has questioned whether that party actually completed the climb. Polish botanists Zygmunt Bośniacki and Wojciech Grzegorzek climbed high on the massif in 1855 and are treated by some modern Slovak mountain-guide sources as the first securely successful summit party.
Today, Gerlach remains one of Slovakia’s most sought-after mountain objectives. There is no ordinary marked hiking trail to the summit. The classic route begins near Sliezsky dom and uses the Velická próba for the ascent, followed by a descent through the Batizovská próba. The terrain reaches approximately UIAA I–II and includes exposed scrambling, route-finding, fixed aids, and substantial elevation gain.

📍 Where Is Gerlachov Peak?
Gerlachov Peak lies in northern Slovakia, within the High Tatras section of Tatra National Park.
The summit is entirely within Slovak territory.
Although much of the main High Tatra crest forms or approaches the Slovakia–Poland border, Gerlach sits farther south on a major lateral ridge branching from the central mountain spine.
The mountain rises above two important glacial valleys:
Velická dolina to the east
and
Batizovská dolina to the west.

The difference is simply one of measurement precision and rounding.
For a general mountain profile, 2,655 meters is the clearest standard elevation.
For detailed topographic data, the LiDAR measurement is useful.
🌍 Highest Mountain in the Carpathians
Gerlach is not merely Slovakia’s highest summit.
It is also the highest mountain in the entire Carpathian chain.
The Carpathians sweep in a great arc through Central and Eastern Europe, passing through or near countries including:

- Slovakia
- Poland
- Hungary
- Ukraine
- Romania
- Serbia
Romania contains much larger expanses of high Carpathian terrain, but none of its mountains exceed Gerlach.
Romania’s highest summit, Moldoveanu Peak, reaches approximately 2,544 meters.
Gerlach therefore stands more than 100 meters higher.
🏔️ Highest Mountain of the High Tatras

The High Tatras form the tallest and most alpine portion of the entire Carpathian system.
Despite extending for only about 26 kilometers along their principal crest, they contain 25 summits exceeding 2,500 meters according to Tatra National Park.

📐 Topographic Prominence
Gerlach has approximately:
2,349 meters / 7,707 feet
of clean topographic prominence.
That is enormous for a European summit only 2,655 meters high.
Prominence measures how far a mountain rises above the highest saddle connecting it with higher terrain.
Gerlach’s key col lies far away in the:
Moravská brána — Moravian Gate

This low saddle separates the broader Carpathian mountain system from higher terrain ultimately connected to the Alps.
Because the key col lies so low, Gerlach retains almost its entire elevation as independent prominence.
🌟 An Ultra-Prominent Mountain
A mountain with at least:

of prominence is commonly classified as an Ultra.
Gerlach exceeds that requirement by more than 800 meters.
Its roughly 2,349 meters of prominence makes it one of the most topographically important peaks in Central and Eastern Europe.
This helps explain why the mountain dominates regional topographic rankings despite being relatively modest in absolute elevation compared with the Alps or Caucasus.

Gerlach has approximately:

That means a person would need to travel more than 500 kilometers from the summit before encountering land rising higher than Gerlach.

🧭 Nearest Higher Neighbor: Hochwildstelle
Peakbagger identifies Hochwildstelle in Austria as Gerlach’s Nearest Higher Neighbor.
Hochwildstelle belongs to the Schladming Tauern region of the Eastern Alps.
The fact that Gerlach’s NHN lies hundreds of kilometers away illustrates the sharp divide between the heights of the Carpathians and the higher Alpine system.
Gerlach is therefore the dominant summit across an enormous region.
🧭 Line Parent: Valluga
Peakbagger identifies Valluga in the Eastern Alps as Gerlach’s line parent.
This may initially seem surprising because Valluga is not one of the Alps’ famous 4,000-meter giants.
Line parentage follows a summit’s topographic prominence relationship through its key col rather than simply identifying the tallest nearby mountain.
Gerlach’s prominence connection ultimately crosses the Moravian Gate toward Alpine terrain.
🏷️ What Does Gerlachovský štít Mean?
The name Gerlachovský štít means approximately:
“Peak of Gerlachov”
or
“Gerlachov Peak.”
The name derives from the nearby village of Gerlachov.
Historical records connect the area around the mountain with Gerlachov for centuries.
The shortened name:
Gerlach
is extremely common in Slovak everyday use.
🥣 Earlier “Cauldron” Names
Before the modern name became established, early maps associated the massif with names meaning cauldron or kettle.
A German-language map from the eighteenth century used the name:
Kösselberg
while Slovak sources later used:
Kotol
meaning approximately:
“cauldron.”
The name probably refers to the enormous bowl-shaped Gerlachovský kotol, or Gerlach cirque, cut into the southern side of the massif.
Glaciers helped excavate this natural amphitheater during the Ice Age.
👑 A Mountain with Many Political Names
Few European mountains have changed official names as often as Gerlach.
Once surveyors established that it was the highest summit of the region, governments began attaching political symbolism to it.
Among the historical names were:
Štít Františka Jozefa / Franz-Joseph-Spitze
The summit was named for Emperor Franz Joseph I during the Austro-Hungarian period.
Štít legionárov
The Czechoslovak government used “Legionnaires Peak” during part of the interwar period in honor of the Czechoslovak Legions.
Slovenský štít
“Slovak Peak” appeared during the Slovak state period.
Stalinov štít
The communist government renamed the mountain “Stalin Peak” in 1949.
The traditional geographical name Gerlachovský štít was eventually restored and has remained the standard modern name.
The repeated renaming reflects the symbolic value governments attached to possessing the highest mountain in their territory.

🔭 How Gerlach Became Recognized as the Highest Peak
For a surprisingly long time, people did not know Gerlach was the highest mountain of the Tatras.
Several other peaks were thought to hold the record.
Kriváň was one early candidate.
Later, Lomnický štít was widely considered the highest summit.
The rugged profile of Gerlach makes its true height difficult to judge visually from many valleys because it does not always appear as a clean, isolated pyramid.
📐 Ľudovít Greiner and the 1838 Measurement
The decisive figure was forester and surveyor Ľudovít Greiner, also known as Ludwig Greiner.
In 1838, Greiner concluded from surveying work that Gerlach was the highest summit in the Tatras.
His conclusion challenged the assumption that Lomnický štít or another famous peak held the record.
The finding did not become universally accepted immediately.

An Austrian military survey party confirmed Gerlach’s superior height in:
1868
More authoritative military mapping later helped establish the result beyond serious dispute.
Older surveys sometimes produced elevations slightly above the modern figure.
Nineteenth-century maps often listed Gerlach near 2,663 meters because surveying technology and reference datums differed from modern measurements.
Today, LiDAR resolves the elevation much more precisely.
🏆 Who First Climbed Gerlach?
This is one of the most interesting unresolved questions surrounding the mountain.
For decades, the standard account has stated that:
Ján Still climbed Gerlach in 1834.
Still was a teacher and mountain guide from Nová Lesná.
Some accounts add:
- Jakob or Johann Gellhof
- Martin Spitzkopf-Urban
- Two unnamed chamois hunters
However, the historical evidence is less secure than many modern summaries suggest.
🧗 Ján Still and the 1834 Story
Ján Still became one of the best-known early High Tatra mountain guides.
Visit Tatry continues to credit him with the first Gerlach ascent in 1834.
The story became deeply established in regional mountaineering history.
There is, however, an unusual complication:
Still himself reportedly denied or downplayed the supposed 1834 summit ascent for years.
Modern historical reviews have therefore questioned whether the party actually reached the highest point.
🧭 Modern Reassessment of the 1834 Attempt
A 2026 review published by the National Association of Mountain Guides of the Slovak Republic describes the 1834 party as an unsuccessful attempt.
According to that interpretation, the group entered the complex terrain of the Gerlachovský kotol but turned back because the upper route was difficult to identify.
This differs from the long-established version that credits Still with the first ascent.
Rather than pretending the evidence is certain, a modern profile should acknowledge the disagreement.
🌿 The 1855 Polish Botanists
In 1855, Polish botanists:
- Zygmunt Bośniacki
- Wojciech Grzegorzek
explored the Gerlach massif while studying high-mountain plants.
Modern Slovak mountain-guide historical material states that they successfully climbed the mountain by terrain associated with the Dromedár ridge and Gerlach cirque.
Other historical discussions have been more cautious because their botanical publication did not provide a detailed climbing narrative.
For that reason, the best summary is:

🗺️ The 1868 Survey Ascent
Austrian surveyors reached the summit in 1868.
Their presence is among the least disputed nineteenth-century summit records.
By this period, scientific and cartographic interest in Gerlach had increased substantially because the mountain was becoming recognized as the highest point of the entire Carpathian system.
Regular guided ascents developed in the following decades.
🥾 Is Gerlach a Hiking Mountain?
Not in the ordinary sense.
There is no current marked tourist trail to the summit.
The standard Gerlach routes enter terrain classified as mountaineering terrain rather than ordinary hiking terrain.
The technical climbing is relatively modest, often around:

Under current rules summarized by the National Association of Mountain Guides, Gerlach is no longer a simple case of “everyone must hire a guide.”
Qualified climbers may access appropriate mountaineering routes if they meet the required competence and registration conditions.
Current categories include climbers on routes from UIAA III upward and appropriately trained climbers on easier routes.
Non-climbers climb with a mountain guide.
Online registration and documentation requirements also apply.
Because TANAP regulations can change, visitors should always check the latest official visitor rules before planning an ascent.
🧗 Why Most Visitors Still Use a Guide
For an ordinary strong hiker without formal climbing experience, a certified mountain guide remains the normal way to climb Gerlach.
The reason is not simply regulation.
The route contains sections where local knowledge matters enormously.
A guide manages:

Gerlach is famous for confusing terrain.
Being only a few meters off the intended line can place a climber in substantially harder rock.
🛖 Sliezsky dom
The classic Gerlach ascent begins at Sliezsky dom.
The mountain hotel stands at approximately:

beside Velické pleso in Velická Valley.
From here, the summit is roughly 985 vertical meters higher, although the complete route involves approximately 1,080–1,100 meters of total ascent because of traverses and intermediate terrain.
Sliezsky dom is one of the most important high-mountain bases in the Slovak Tatras.

The approach climbs through Velická dolina, a beautiful glacial valley below Gerlach.
Important features include:

Slovakia Travel notes that the terrace above the waterfall is known as Kvetnica, or “Flower Garden,” because of its botanical richness.

🧗 Velická próba
The classic ascent uses the:

This is one of Gerlach’s best-known technical passages.
The route negotiates a steep rocky section using fixed assistance and rope protection.
Above the próba, climbers enter more complicated broken terrain around the Gerlach cirque and Kotlový štít.
Although the individual climbing moves are not extremely difficult, orientation becomes increasingly important.
🥣 Gerlachovský kotol
The Gerlachovský kotol, or Gerlach cauldron, is a huge glacial cirque cut into the mountain.
It is one of the defining landforms of the massif.
Climbers on the classic route traverse a complicated system of:

- Gullies

- Broken rock
around the cirque.
This terrain helps explain why Gerlach can be difficult to navigate despite lacking sustained technical climbing.

Fixed metal aids help negotiate portions of the terrain, but climbers are typically protected by rope.
The descent continues toward Batizovské pleso before eventually returning toward Sliezsky dom.

Poor visibility is particularly serious on Gerlach because the route crosses complicated unmarked terrain.

⚡ Thunderstorms
High Tatra thunderstorms can develop quickly during warmer months.
The upper Gerlach massif provides almost no shelter.
Lightning, wet granite, falling rock, and poor visibility may occur simultaneously.
A summit is never worth remaining on an exposed ridge when thunderstorms are developing.

🪨 Geology of Gerlachov Peak
Gerlach belongs to the crystalline core of the High Tatras.
Unlike the limestone-dominated Belianske Tatras nearby, the highest portion of the High Tatras consists predominantly of:
- Granite
- Granodiorite
- Related granitoid rocks
Scientific geological studies commonly describe the High Tatras as being dominated by Variscan granitoids.
These rocks were already ancient long before the modern Carpathian mountains took their present shape.
🔥 Formation of the High Tatra Granite
Modern zircon dating indicates several stages of granitoid magmatism in the High Tatras.
Important age populations occur around:
350 ± 5 million years
and:
337 ± 6 million years
with the youngest major magmatic activity around:
330 million years ago.
These dates place the granite formation during the Carboniferous Period and the great Variscan mountain-building episode.
The granite body therefore predates the modern Carpathians by hundreds of millions of years.
🌍 The Variscan Orogeny
The Variscan Orogeny was a massive Paleozoic mountain-building event associated with continental collisions that contributed to the assembly of Pangaea.
Deep within the crust, melting and magma intrusion produced large granitoid bodies.
Those rocks cooled underground.
Much later, tectonic uplift exposed them at the surface.
The granite now forming Gerlach was therefore once buried deep within ancient continental crust.
🏔️ Alpine-Carpathian Uplift
The modern Carpathians developed much later during Alpine-age tectonic activity.
The ancient crystalline Tatra block was:
- Faulted
- Uplifted
- Tilted
- Exhumed
during formation of the Western Carpathians.
This means Gerlach tells two geological stories simultaneously.
Its rock largely reflects Paleozoic Variscan magmatism.
Its modern mountain form reflects much younger Carpathian uplift and Quaternary erosion.
🧊 Ice Age Glaciers
The sharp modern appearance of Gerlach owes an enormous amount to Pleistocene glaciation.
During the Last Glacial Maximum, valley glaciers occupied much of the High Tatras.
Research indicates that the Tatra Mountains supported dozens of glacier systems covering hundreds of square kilometers.
Ice carved:

The landscape surrounding Gerlach remains full of these glacial features.
🥣 Gerlachovský kotol as a Glacial Cirque
The Gerlachovský kotol is a particularly dramatic example.
Glacier ice accumulated beneath the mountain and excavated the bowl-shaped depression.
Freeze-thaw weathering and rockfall continued to steepen the walls.
The result is the enormous natural amphitheater visible today.
The cirque is therefore not an ancient volcanic crater.
It is a product of glacial erosion.
🧊 Batizovská and Velická Valleys
Both valleys flanking Gerlach were shaped by glacier ice.
The valleys contain classic evidence of glacial activity including:
- Tarns
- Moraines
- Smoothed rock
- Hanging valleys
- Cirque walls
Batizovské pleso and Velické pleso occupy landscapes strongly influenced by former glaciers.
The surrounding ridges were sharpened as neighboring ice masses eroded opposite sides of the mountain.
🧊 Does Gerlach Have a Glacier Today?
No large active glacier survives on Gerlach.
In fact, the modern Tatras are considered essentially unglaciated mountains.
Small perennial snow and ice patches can survive in sheltered high cirques, but these are not comparable with the valley glaciers of the Alps.
Scientific work indicates that major glacier activity disappeared from the Tatras near the end of the Pleistocene.
The youngest significant glacial and rock-glacier landforms date roughly to the Younger Dryas and earliest Holocene.
🌿 Flora and Fauna
The upper summit of Gerlach is dominated by bare granite, scree, snow patches, and extremely sparse vegetation.
Lower elevations within Tatra National Park contain far more diverse habitats.
The vertical ecological sequence includes:

The Tatras contain several plants and animals adapted to conditions more commonly associated with far northern latitudes.
