Hidden within the rain-soaked central highlands of Kauaʻi, Kawaikini is the highest point on the island and one of the most isolated major summits in the Hawaiian Islands. Reaching 5,243 feet (1,598 meters) above sea level, the mountain rises only slightly higher than neighboring Waiʻaleʻale, yet that small difference makes Kawaikini the true geographic high point of the Garden Isle.

Kawaikini is not a classic pointed mountain. It occupies a rugged section of Kauaʻi’s ancient volcanic highlands, surrounded by rain forest, bogs, deeply incised streams, precipitous cliffs, and some of the wettest terrain in Hawaiʻi. Thick cloud and frequent rain can hide the summit for days at a time.

The mountain’s importance extends far beyond its elevation. Kawaikini preserves part of the ancient shield volcano that created Kauaʻi more than five million years ago. Water draining from the highlands sustains streams and communities across the island, while nearby forests provide refuge for rare plants, native insects, Hawaiian land snails, and some of the world’s most endangered forest birds.

Its remoteness also means Kawaikini should not be treated as an ordinary recreational summit. There is no maintained public trail directly to the high point, and routes described by peakbaggers commonly involve miles of saturated forest, mud, fences, unmaintained terrain, and areas outside Hawaiʻi’s designated recreational trail system.

📍 Where Is Kawaikini?

Kawaikini lies within the rugged central interior of Kauaʻi, well removed from the island’s beaches, towns, and highways.

It stands immediately south of Waiʻaleʻale, the better-known rainy summit that was long described in popular sources as Kauaʻi’s highest mountain.

Modern topographic mapping places Kawaikini roughly 95 feet higher.

The surrounding highland forms part of the island’s complicated volcanic core. To the west lie the Alakaʻi highlands, Waimea Canyon, and the spectacular valleys draining toward the Nā Pali Coast. Eastward, the terrain descends toward the Wailua and Līhuʻe regions.

Far to the southeast across more than 200 miles of Pacific Ocean is Puʻu Kukui on Maui, the nearest point of higher elevation.

📏 How High Is Kawaikini?

Kawaikini reaches 5,243 feet (1,598.1 meters) according to Peakbagger, using U.S. Geological Survey topographic mapping.

That makes it the highest natural point on Kauaʻi.

The distinction matters because Waiʻaleʻale has frequently been described as Kauaʻi’s highest mountain in older geography books and tourism literature.

Waiʻaleʻale reaches approximately 5,148 feet.

Kawaikini therefore stands around 95 feet higher.

Because the two summits occupy the same broad central mountain complex and Waiʻaleʻale became internationally famous for its rainfall records, the lower summit often received much greater attention.

Modern elevation data make the relationship clear: Kawaikini is the high point; Waiʻaleʻale is the famous rain mountain.

🧭 Nearest Higher Neighbor

Kawaikini has a particularly impressive topographic relationship with the rest of Hawaiʻi.

Its nearest higher neighbor is Puʻu Kukui, the 5,788-foot summit of the West Maui Mountains.

Peakbagger calculates the distance to higher terrain at approximately 203.4 miles (327.34 kilometers).

That is an enormous isolation figure for a mountain only slightly above 5,000 feet.

The reason is simple: Kawaikini is the highest point on Kauaʻi, and the nearby island of Oʻahu does not contain any mountains high enough to exceed it. Molokaʻi’s Kamakou reaches 4,961 feet, still below Kawaikini.

A traveler must therefore cross a huge section of the Hawaiian chain before reaching higher ground on Maui.

⛰️ An Ultra-Prominent Island High Point

Because Kawaikini is the highest point on an oceanic island, its key col is effectively sea level.

Its prominence is therefore approximately equal to its elevation: 5,243 feet (1,598 meters).

That places Kawaikini above the 1,500-meter threshold used to define an ultra-prominent mountain, commonly called an ultra.

Its absolute elevation may be modest compared with continental giants, but its topographic independence is extraordinary.

This is one of the reasons island high points can produce such impressive prominence statistics.

Kawaikini does not need to be 10,000 or 15,000 feet high to stand as one of the Pacific’s significant independent mountain masses.

🏝️ Kawaikini vs. Waiʻaleʻale

Kawaikini and Waiʻaleʻale are separated by only a short distance, but they represent two distinct topographic summits.

Waiʻaleʻale reaches approximately 5,148 feet and has only around 68 feet of prominence because it is connected to higher Kawaikini across a saddle near 5,080 feet.

Kawaikini reaches 5,243 feet and possesses more than 5,000 feet of prominence because it is Kauaʻi’s true island high point.

This creates an unusual situation in which the lower summit is much more famous.

Waiʻaleʻale’s long-running rain gauge helped make it internationally known as one of Earth’s wettest locations. Kawaikini remained far less familiar outside Hawaiʻi despite being the island’s actual high point.

🌋 The Summit of an Ancient Hawaiian Volcano

Kawaikini represents the highest surviving portion of the ancient volcanic system that created much of Kauaʻi.

Kauaʻi is one of the oldest of the main high Hawaiian Islands.

The oldest major exposed shield-building lava dates to approximately 5.1 million years ago.

During that period, Kauaʻi would have looked dramatically different.

Repeated eruptions of basaltic lava created an enormous shield volcano rising thousands of meters from the Pacific Ocean floor.

The original volcano was broad and comparatively smooth, much more like a younger Hawaiian shield such as Mauna Loa than the deeply carved island visible today.

Millions of years of erosion have since dismantled much of that original structure.

🔥 The Hawaiian Hotspot

Kawaikini’s origin begins deep below the Pacific.

The Hawaiian Islands formed as the Pacific Plate moved across the Hawaiian hotspot, a long-lived region of magma generation beneath the oceanic crust.

Basaltic magma erupted repeatedly onto the seafloor.

Thousands of lava flows accumulated until the growing volcano emerged above the ocean.

As the Pacific Plate continued moving northwestward, Kauaʻi gradually moved away from the most productive portion of the hotspot.

The rate of eruption declined.

Eventually, the great shield-building stage ended and erosion became increasingly important.

This process explains the progression visible along the Hawaiian chain.

Young volcanoes such as Kīlauea remain intensely active, while Kauaʻi represents a much older landscape where water and gravity have largely replaced lava as the dominant sculpting forces.

🪨 Waimea Canyon Basalt

Much of Kauaʻi’s ancient shield is composed of rock known today as Waimea Canyon Basalt.

This formation includes several major members, among them the Nāpali, Olokele, Makaweli, and Hā‘upu units.

The older Nāpali Member represents an enormous portion of the original shield volcano.

USGS age data place much of the Nāpali Member at approximately 5.1 to 4.35 million years old.

Younger shield and postshield rocks followed.

Near the central highlands, thick lava accumulated within ancient volcanic depressions and structural basins.

Historic USGS geological work identified rocks of the Olokele Member near Kawaikini’s upper elevations.

The summit therefore sits near the top of an extraordinary stack of ancient lava extending thousands of feet above sea level and many thousands more beneath it.

🕳️ Kauaʻi’s Ancient Caldera

The geological history of Kauaʻi is far more complicated than a simple shield volcano gradually wearing away.

A major caldera complex developed near the center of the ancient shield.

Sections of the summit collapsed.

Large fault-bounded depressions formed.

Lava subsequently filled portions of these depressions, producing thick accumulations of volcanic rock.

USGS geologists have also documented large graben structures and complicated faulting across the island.

These events help explain why Kauaʻi’s geology can be considerably more difficult to interpret than the relatively young surfaces of active Hawaiian volcanoes.

Kawaikini occupies this ancient, structurally complicated central volcanic landscape.

💥 Giant Landslides

Kauaʻi also experienced enormous landslides during its geological evolution.

Large sections of Hawaiian shield volcanoes can become unstable under their own tremendous weight.

As volcanic mountains grow, gravitational spreading, faulting, magma intrusion, earthquakes, and steep submarine slopes can contribute to catastrophic flank collapse.

Evidence from the Nā Pali region suggests that massive landslides helped remove portions of Kauaʻi’s ancient volcanic structure.

Later erosion further modified the scars.

Similar giant collapses affected Kohala, the ancient East Molokaʻi volcano beneath Kamakou, and the Koʻolau Volcano on Oʻahu.

The Hawaiian Islands may appear tranquil today, but their geology records some of Earth’s largest landslides.

🌧️ A Mountain Defined by Water

The name Kawaikini is commonly translated as “the multitudinous waters.”

Few names could fit the environment better.

The summit lies within one of the wettest mountain landscapes in Hawaiʻi.

Moist northeast trade winds encounter Kauaʻi and rise across the central mountains. As the air rises, it cools, clouds form, and enormous amounts of moisture fall across the highlands.

Rain is only part of the story.

Cloud droplets collect directly on leaves, mosses, ferns, branches, and other vegetation.

The entire landscape can remain saturated even between heavier rain events.

Streams, seepages, bogs, wet cliffs, and waterfalls consequently dominate the environment around Kawaikini.

☁️ Life Inside the Clouds

The central Kauaʻi summit region frequently disappears into cloud.

Visibility may shrink dramatically.

Wind-driven mist saturates vegetation, while water gathers across uneven ground and dense forest.

Unlike a high continental peak, Kawaikini does not rise above the vegetation into a broad alpine tundra zone.

Its elevation and tropical climate instead support montane wet forest, shrubland, fernland, and bog-like environments close to the summit.

Cloud and rain are so fundamental to the landscape that they affect everything from plant height to soil development and hiking difficulty.

Even during comparatively dry periods along the coast, Kawaikini’s upper slopes may remain wet and obscured.

💧 The Water Tower of Kauaʻi

Water captured by the central mountains eventually drains toward multiple portions of Kauaʻi.

The nearby Alakaʻi highlands contain the headwaters of Kawaikōī, Waikoali, Mōhihi, and other streams.

These mountain watersheds are important for native ecosystems as well as human communities.

Rain infiltrates soils and fractured volcanic rock, replenishes groundwater, and eventually emerges through streams and springs.

For generations, Hawaiian communities depended upon water descending from these uplands for agriculture, drinking water, ecosystems, and cultural practices.

That relationship remains important today.

In 2026, Hawaiʻi DLNR proposed additional fencing to protect another 2,400 acres of the Alakaʻi Wilderness Preserve, specifically emphasizing the importance of safeguarding headwaters, native species, and water resources.

🏞️ Alakaʻi Wilderness Preserve

West and northwest of Kawaikini lies the remarkable Alakaʻi Wilderness Preserve, Hawaiʻi’s only designated wilderness preserve.

The Alakaʻi occupies a high plateau containing some of the most intact native ecosystems remaining on Kauaʻi.

Its landscape includes wet forest, shallow bogs, deeply cut streams, fernlands, ridges, and extremely muddy terrain.

The preserve is famous for its moisture.

The Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife describes it as an extreme environment and one of Kauaʻi’s most important remaining areas of high-quality native habitat.

Although Kawaikini lies outside portions of the familiar recreational Alakaʻi trail system, the mountain belongs to the same extraordinary central-highland ecological landscape.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

Kawaikini and the surrounding central Kauaʻi highlands contain one of the richest concentrations of endemic biodiversity in the Hawaiian Islands.

Wet montane forest is commonly dominated by ʻōhiʻa lehua, with an understory and subcanopy containing ʻōlapa, lapalapa, ʻōhiʻa hā, ʻōhelo, kanawao, kāwaʻu, kōlea, native lobeliads, ferns, sedges, mosses, and numerous endemic shrubs.

Conditions vary dramatically over short distances.

Some locations support tall wet forest.

Others contain low, wind-shaped shrubland or fern communities adapted to saturated slopes.

Cliffs and deeply incised stream valleys can preserve rare plants because they are difficult for browsing animals to reach.

Kauaʻi contains unusually high levels of plant endemism even by Hawaiian standards, and several species are restricted to tiny regions around the central highlands.

🌱 A Plant Named for Kawaikini

One of the most remarkable plants discovered in the mountain region is Coprosma kawaikiniensis.

Botanists formally described the species in 2016 after finding it in exceptionally remote habitat below Kawaikini.

The plant occurs in a distinctive Dubautia–Sadleria shrubland-fernland community on steep ridges, slopes, stream banks, and mist-shrouded basalt terrain.

At the time of its formal description, scientists had documented fewer than 50 individuals.

Its scientific name specifically honors Kawaikini.

The discovery illustrates how biologically little-known some portions of central Kauaʻi remain.

Even in the 21st century, botanists continue finding plant species in inaccessible mountain habitat that were previously unknown to science.

🌺 ʻŌhiʻa Lehua

ʻŌhiʻa lehua forms the ecological foundation of much of the high wet forest around Kawaikini and the Alakaʻi.

The tree tolerates extraordinary variation in rainfall, soil, elevation, and exposure.

Its branches provide habitat for mosses, lichens, ferns, insects, snails, and birds.

Lehua flowers provide nectar for Hawaiian forest birds, while the canopy helps intercept cloud droplets and rainfall.

One modern concern is Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, a disease caused by introduced fungal pathogens.

Kauaʻi conservation projects therefore combine forest protection with measures intended to slow the movement of disease and protect surviving ʻōhiʻa ecosystems.

🐦 Puaiohi

The puaiohi, or small Kauaʻi thrush, is one of the rarest birds associated with the central Alakaʻi landscape.

It occurs nowhere outside Kauaʻi.

Current Hawaiʻi DLNR information places its surviving range at less than 20 square kilometers, concentrated on the southern and central Alakaʻi Plateau.

The bird prefers deeply incised stream valleys containing wet montane forest dominated by ʻōhiʻa and ʻōlapa.

Puaiohi feed on native fruit and insects.

Their survival is threatened by introduced rats, habitat degradation, invasive plants, cats, storms, and other ecological pressures.

The species’ tiny geographic range makes protection of the Kawaikini–Alakaʻi highlands especially important.

🐦 ʻAkekeʻe

The ʻakekeʻe is another endangered Kauaʻi honeycreeper associated with high native forest.

Adults are small greenish-yellow birds with distinctive crossed bill tips adapted for opening leaf buds and extracting insects.

The species has declined dramatically.

Loss and degradation of native forest, introduced predators, and mosquito-borne avian malaria have all contributed.

High-elevation refuges once helped native birds escape mosquitoes because temperatures were too cool for the insects to thrive.

Climate warming has gradually reduced that protection.

The remaining mountain forests around the Alakaʻi are consequently central to efforts to prevent further Kauaʻi bird extinctions.

🐦 The ʻAkikiki Crisis

The story of the ʻakikiki, or Kauaʻi creeper, demonstrates how urgent forest-bird conservation has become.

Historically, ʻakikiki occupied a much wider range across Kauaʻi.

By recent decades, they had retreated almost entirely into the highest wet forests of the Alakaʻi.

Avian malaria caused catastrophic declines as disease-carrying mosquitoes expanded upward into formerly safe habitat.

By August 2026, the last known wild ʻakikiki, a female named Pakele, had not been seen for approximately a year.

Conservationists maintain ʻakikiki in human care with the hope that suitable protected habitat may eventually allow birds to return to Kauaʻi’s forests.

The disappearance of wild ʻakikiki is a sobering reminder that even remote mountain habitat is not isolated from climate change and invasive species.

🦟 Avian Malaria

Mosquitoes are not native to Hawaiʻi.

After their introduction, they became vectors for diseases that native Hawaiian birds had never evolved to resist.

Avian malaria has been particularly devastating.

For many years, high elevations such as the Alakaʻi offered birds a refuge because cool temperatures restricted mosquito reproduction.

As temperatures have increased, that refuge has contracted.

Mosquitoes now reach elevations where endangered forest birds once remained comparatively protected.

Conservationists are using increasingly intensive strategies to reduce mosquito numbers and preserve disease-free habitat.

The future of several Kauaʻi species may depend upon whether these programs succeed.

🐗 Feral Pigs and Deer

Introduced ungulates also threaten the central highlands.

Feral pigs and deer browse native vegetation, disturb soil, damage seedlings, and create openings where invasive plants can spread.

Pig wallows can collect standing water suitable for mosquito reproduction.

Hawaiʻi DLNR has installed extensive fencing across portions of the Alakaʻi to exclude ungulates.

The agency’s 2026 proposal would protect another 2,400 acres by connecting new fencing with existing fenced conservation areas.

Gates and stepovers are planned to maintain appropriate public access while preventing animals from entering protected native habitat.

This illustrates the complicated balance between recreation, hunting, watershed protection, and endangered-species conservation in Kauaʻi’s highlands.

🌱 Invasive Plants

Non-native plants present another major challenge.

Himalayan ginger and strawberry guava are among the invasive species specifically targeted by current conservation programs.

Both can form dense stands that alter native forest structure.

When aggressive introduced plants replace native vegetation, birds lose food sources and nesting habitat.

Watershed function can also change.

Removing invasive plants and allowing native vegetation to recover is therefore an important complement to fencing and predator management.

Protecting Kawaikini’s surrounding forests requires far more than simply drawing a boundary on a map.

🥾 Can You Hike Kawaikini?

Kawaikini should not be presented as an ordinary public summit trail.

Peakbagger places the summit on lands associated with the Līhuʻe-Kōloa and Nā Pali-Kona Forest Reserves, but the State of Hawaiʻi does not maintain a designated recreational trail directly to the high point.

The Division of Forestry and Wildlife specifically warns that hiking on undesignated trails is not recommended because of natural hazards.

State trail guidance also warns visitors not to assume that roads or tracks branching from designated recreational routes are open for public use.

Access may involve land-management restrictions, hunting areas, conservation infrastructure, and routes not maintained for hiking.

Anyone planning an attempt should verify current access directly with Kauaʻi DOFAW rather than relying on old peakbagging reports.

🌧️ Why Kawaikini Is So Difficult to Reach

The mountain’s relatively low elevation may make it sound easy.

It is not.

Summit approaches can involve deep mud, saturated forest, boggy ground, steep cliffs, dense vegetation, pig-control fences, streams, rain, and extremely limited visibility.

The terrain is often wet even during favorable weather.

There are no alpine meadows or obvious rocky ridgelines guiding visitors toward the summit.

Instead, navigating the highlands can mean moving through forest where one wet ridge or drainage looks remarkably similar to the next.

Remote conditions also make rescue considerably more difficult.

The challenge of Kawaikini comes primarily from terrain, weather, navigation, and access—not from technical climbing or altitude.

🚶 Better Ways to Experience Kauaʻi’s High Country

Fortunately, visitors do not need to reach Kawaikini itself to experience the island’s extraordinary central highlands.

The Alakaʻi Swamp Trail provides an official route through native rain forest and shallow bog within the Alakaʻi Wilderness landscape.

The trail is approximately 3.5 miles one way and is rated difficult.

Portions follow boardwalk, although hikers should still expect deep mud, wet surfaces, fog, and rain.

The nearby Pihea Trail provides another excellent introduction to native forest and views around the rim of Kalalau Valley.

Hawaiʻi State Parks specifically cautions visitors not to continue beyond the designated Pihea Overlook because terrain beyond that point becomes dangerously steep.

These trails offer a much more appropriate public experience than attempting an improvised route to Kawaikini.

🌦️ Weather on Kawaikini

Few mountain environments demand waterproof preparation as consistently as central Kauaʻi.

Rain can occur during any season.

Clouds can reduce visibility with little warning.

Trails and unpaved roads can become extremely muddy, and stream levels can rise after heavy rainfall.

Temperatures are also cooler at 5,000 feet than they are along Kauaʻi’s coast.

Wind and soaked clothing can produce unexpectedly uncomfortable conditions.

Anyone traveling into the high country should carry rain protection, adequate food and water, navigation equipment, warm layers, and supplies suitable for a remote wet environment.

The central mountains should never be approached as though tropical Hawaiʻi guarantees warm and easy hiking conditions.

🌺 Kawaikini in Hawaiian Geography

Kawaikini belongs to the traditional Kona moku of Kauaʻi.

University of Hawaiʻi cultural-place resources identify Kawaikini as the great mountain within this ancient district.

The mountain is also mentioned alongside Waiʻaleʻale and Kawaikōī in Hawaiian mele associated with the rain and uplands of Kauaʻi.

One chant describes the Noelehua rain of Waiʻaleʻale and mist over Alakaʻi before referencing Kawaikini and Kawaikōī.

These traditions show how closely water, forest, mountain, and Hawaiian cultural geography were connected.

Kawaikini was not an anonymous summit waiting to be measured by modern surveyors. It was part of an upland landscape known and named long before recreational peakbagging.

💧 What Does Kawaikini Mean?

Kawaikini is commonly translated as “the multitudinous waters.”

The interpretation is especially fitting for a summit surrounded by rain, mist, streams, springs, and saturated forest.

The name has also become a modern symbol of the way water from Kauaʻi’s highlands sustains communities around the island before eventually returning to the ocean and atmospheric water cycle.

As with many Hawaiian place names, however, a short English translation can never capture every historical and cultural layer associated with the original name.

The mountain’s physical relationship with water remains immediately obvious.

🧭 No Conventional First Ascent

Kawaikini does not have a meaningful conventional “first ascent” date.

Native Hawaiians knew and traveled through Kauaʻi’s uplands long before Western recreational climbing records.

Forests and mountain watersheds supplied water, plants, wood, feathers, medicines, and other resources.

Hawaiian mele and traditional geographical knowledge also establish a long relationship with the central mountains.

Later surveyors, foresters, hunters, scientists, and peakbaggers created written records of their own journeys, but those expeditions should not be confused with the first human knowledge of Kawaikini.

The mountain existed within a named cultural landscape generations earlier.

🏔️ Kawaikini and Kauaʻi’s Other Mountains

Kawaikini forms the high point of a remarkably varied island.

Nearby Waiʻaleʻale is lower but famous for rainfall.

Haupu Mountain rises dramatically above southeastern Kauaʻi and preserves another fascinating section of the ancient volcanic structure.

Nounou Mountain is much lower but offers one of the island’s more accessible mountain hiking experiences.

The Nā Pali highlands contain additional dramatic ridges and summits shaped by millions of years of erosion.

Together, these mountains demonstrate how thoroughly time and water can transform an old Hawaiian shield volcano.

🌋 Kawaikini vs. Mauna Loa

Kawaikini and Mauna Loa illustrate opposite ends of the Hawaiian volcanic life cycle.

Mauna Loa is still actively building itself through eruptions.

Most of its exposed surface is geologically young, and lava repeatedly buries older landscapes before streams can carve deep valleys.

Kauaʻi’s volcano has been quiet for millions of years.

Rain, landslides, weathering, and streams have had enormous amounts of time to reshape it.

Canyons are deep.

Ridges are narrow.

Cliffs expose the internal architecture of the old volcanic shield.

Kawaikini therefore represents not a smaller version of Mauna Loa but a glimpse of what an ancient Hawaiian volcano can eventually become.

🌄 Why Kawaikini Is Remarkable

Kawaikini is one of those mountains whose importance is easily overlooked.

It is not Kauaʻi’s most photographed summit.

It does not possess the fame of Waiʻaleʻale’s rainfall records or the spectacular coastal form of the Nā Pali cliffs.

It is not particularly high by global standards.

Yet Kawaikini is the geographic apex of one of the world’s most extraordinary volcanic islands.

More than five million years ago, lava began building Kauaʻi upward from the floor of the Pacific. The volcano grew into an enormous shield before collapse, faulting, landslides, and erosion began dismantling it.

Millions of years later, the highest surviving point is Kawaikini.

Today, water dominates where fire once ruled.

Rain and cloud saturate the mountain. Streams descend from the plateau. Native ʻōhiʻa forest captures mist, while endemic plants cling to steep ridges and deeply incised ravines.

The highlands have become a last refuge for some of Hawaiʻi’s rarest species.

They are also a warning.

The disappearance of wild ʻakikiki shows that even a remote mountain hidden in cloud is not insulated from climate change, invasive species, disease, and ecological disruption.

For that reason, Kawaikini is far more than a box to check on a list of island high points.

It is an ancient volcanic summit, an ultra-prominent Pacific mountain, a critical Hawaiian watershed, a biological refuge, and the highest surviving fragment of the volcano that created Kauaʻi.
