Ibex Peak

Rising abruptly from the arid landscape of western Arizona, Ibex Peak is one of the most distinctive summits in the northern Plomosa Mountains. The rugged desert peak reaches approximately 2,814 feet (858 meters) above sea level and has an impressive 1,067 feet (325 meters) of topographic prominence.
Ibex Peak is located in La Paz County, northeast of Quartzsite and southwest of Bouse. Although its elevation is modest compared with Arizona’s higher mountain ranges, the peak’s steep cliffs, isolated position, and more than 1,000 feet of prominence make it an imposing landmark.
Reaching the summit is not a conventional trail hike. There is no maintained hiking trail to the top, and common routes involve steep off-trail travel, loose rock, careful route-finding, and sections of Class 3 scrambling. Access also requires special attention because the surrounding landscape includes Bureau of Land Management property, Arizona State Trust Land, and some private or historically mined parcels.
For experienced desert hikers and scramblers, Ibex Peak offers a rewarding introduction to the wild and complicated landscape of western Arizona’s Plomosa Mountains.

🏜️ Where Is Ibex Peak?
Ibex Peak lies in the northern portion of the Plomosa Mountains, a north-south-trending desert range in western Arizona.
The mountains extend southward from the vicinity of Bouse toward Interstate 10 and the desert east of Quartzsite. The broad La Posa Plain lies to the west, while additional ranges rise beyond the desert basins to the east and southeast.
Ibex Peak occupies a particularly rugged section of the northern range.
Nearby Haystack Peak lies less than a mile to the northeast, forming another striking rocky summit. Old mining sites including the Southern Cross and Jewel mines also appear on USGS maps of the surrounding area.
Farther south in the Plomosa Mountains, higher terrain eventually reaches the range’s overall high point at Black Mesa.
⛰️ More Prominent Than Its Elevation Suggests
At only 2,814 feet above sea level, Ibex Peak might initially sound like a relatively small Arizona mountain.
Its 1,067 feet of prominence, however, tells a different story.
Topographic prominence measures the vertical rise of a summit above the lowest saddle connecting it with higher terrain. Because Ibex Peak rises abruptly above the desert surrounding it, the mountain stands much more independently than many considerably higher peaks.
Peakbagger gives the summit a true isolation of approximately 4.04 miles.
This combination of prominence and isolation explains why Ibex Peak looks so substantial when approached across the surrounding desert flats.
It is also included among Arizona peaks exceeding 1,000 feet of topographic prominence.
🏔️ Nearest Higher Neighbor
Peakbagger identifies Ibex Peak’s Nearest Higher Neighbor as a numbered, unnamed summit to the south-southwest.
Following Mountain Field Guide convention, this is best listed simply as Unnamed Peak.
The higher terrain is approximately four miles away, giving Ibex Peak enough separation to stand as a clearly recognizable independent summit.
Its key col lies at approximately 1,747 feet, more than 1,000 vertical feet below the summit.
🥾 Hiking Ibex Peak
Ibex Peak is not a maintained-trail hike.
Anyone attempting the summit should expect off-trail travel through rugged Sonoran Desert terrain, along with loose slopes, cactus, route-finding, and scrambling.
Recent recorded ascents suggest a typical modern outing can cover roughly 3.2 to 3.3 miles round trip with around 1,400 to 1,500 feet of cumulative elevation gain, depending heavily on the starting point and route chosen.
A 2026 ascent described using old mining roads for approximately the first half-mile before beginning a steep climb toward the summit. Most of the off-road ascent was Class 2, but reaching the upper mountain required some Class 3 scrambling.
Another route described by experienced desert peak climbers approaches from the southwest and also includes Class 3 terrain.
There is no single official summit route, and the difficulty can change dramatically if hikers enter the wrong gully or ridge.
🧗 Class 3 Scrambling
The summit should not be described as a simple hiking destination.
Some approaches include low Class 3 scrambling, meaning hikers may need to use their hands for upward movement on steep rock.
Historical climbing reports describe more serious variations on the southwest ridge where climbers used a belay at a couple of locations.
Other modern approaches appear to keep the technical difficulty lower by carefully choosing gullies and ledges.
This variation is important.
Ibex Peak’s cliffs contain numerous gullies, ribs, ledges, and dead ends. A route that looks straightforward from below may become substantially harder higher on the mountain.
Experienced desert route-finding is therefore one of the most useful skills for an Ibex Peak ascent.
🪨 Loose Rock and Difficult Descents
The scrambling itself is only part of the challenge.
Much of Ibex Peak consists of steep, loose desert terrain where footing can be unreliable.
A recent HikeArizona ascent specifically noted that descending the steep loose slopes was more difficult than climbing them.
This is common on rugged desert peaks. Loose gravel and rock can move beneath a hiker’s feet, particularly on steep slopes where there is little vegetation or soil to stabilize the surface.
Good footwear with strong traction is especially important.
Trekking poles can help on easier slopes, although they must often be stowed during scrambling sections where both hands are needed.
🌵 Watch Out for Cholla
Ibex Peak also has another classic western Arizona obstacle: cholla cactus.
Historical route descriptions mention exceptionally dense concentrations of teddy-bear cholla on portions of the upper mountain.
Cholla segments detach extremely easily and can become embedded in clothing, footwear, or skin.
Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and long pants and pay close attention to the ground when moving through cactus-covered slopes.
A small comb or multitool can be useful for removing cactus segments without touching the spines directly.
Ibex is a mountain where watching your footing matters for more reasons than one.
🚙 Getting to the Mountain
Reaching Ibex Peak usually involves driving unpaved desert roads east of Plomosa Road, which connects the Quartzsite area with Bouse.
Road quality varies considerably.
Recent visitors have described several miles of rocky, slow travel where high clearance is useful and speeds may be extremely low.
Conditions can change following storms, flooding, mining activity, or vehicle traffic.
Travelers should carry offline maps because the network of old roads around the Plomosa Mountains can be confusing.
A vehicle capable of handling rough desert tracks is strongly recommended for approaches that continue deep toward the base of the peak.
⚠️ Important Land-Access Considerations
Land ownership around Ibex Peak requires more care than older hiking descriptions sometimes suggest.
Much of the broader Plomosa region is administered by the Bureau of Land Management, including the Plomosa Special Recreation Management Area.
However, a recent 2025 ascent identified the actual Ibex Peak hiking area as Arizona State Trust Land, with a short road section near abandoned mining features crossing or approaching private property.
Arizona State Trust Land is not the same as ordinary federal public land.
A valid Arizona State Land Department recreational permit is required for hiking on State Trust Land unless a specific exception applies.
Visitors should check the Arizona State Land Department’s current parcel map, carry the required permit, respect all private-property boundaries, and verify legal vehicle access before beginning the hike.
Land ownership and road access can change, so an old GPS track should never be treated as proof that a route remains legal.
⛏️ Mining History and Hazards
Old mines are scattered through parts of the northern Plomosa Mountains.
USGS mapping identifies features such as the Southern Cross Mine, Jewel Mine, Climax Mine, and Tough Nut Shafts near Ibex Peak.
Historic mining roads are one reason hikers can drive or walk relatively close to portions of the mountain.
They also create hazards.
Abandoned mine shafts and tunnels can be unstable, poorly ventilated, unexpectedly deep, and difficult to see in low light.
Never enter an abandoned mine or approach the edge of an open shaft.
Old mining structures should also be left undisturbed.
🪨 Geology of the Plomosa Mountains
The geology surrounding Ibex Peak is considerably more complicated than the simple appearance of an isolated desert range might suggest.
The northern Plomosa Mountains expose deformed Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks associated with a regional structure known as the Maria Tectonic Belt.
This belt extends across western Arizona and southeastern California.
During the Mesozoic Era, enormous compressional forces shortened and deformed the crust. Rocks were folded, faulted, metamorphosed, and displaced along major thrust structures.
Research in the Plomosa Mountains has documented substantial east-to-west movement along thrust faults as well as later right-lateral strike-slip faulting.
Younger volcanic rocks were subsequently deposited across parts of the range.
🌋 Younger Volcanism and Later Faulting
The Plomosa Mountains did not stop changing after their older rocks were folded and faulted.
U.S. Geological Survey research identified rhyodacite lava flows approximately 19 to 20 million years old that lie unconformably above older thrust faults.
These volcanic rocks were themselves later cut by strike-slip faults.
Other studies of the broader Blythe region document additional Cenozoic extension, magmatism, and large detachment faults.
The result is an unusually complicated geological landscape where rocks and structures from very different periods of Earth history occur within a relatively small region.
Ibex Peak is therefore part of a mountain range shaped by repeated episodes of sedimentation, volcanism, metamorphism, compression, extension, faulting, uplift, and erosion.
🐏 Why Is It Called Ibex Peak?
The origin of the name Ibex Peak is not completely certain, but there is an intriguing historical explanation.
True ibex are wild goats native to mountainous regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are not native to Arizona.
The Plomosa Mountains do, however, support desert bighorn sheep.
An old Arizona Highways account discussing Arizona’s bighorn sheep suggested that the name Ibex Peak may have resulted from early observers confusing native bighorn sheep with ibex.
Whether that story can be definitively proven is another question, but the association is fitting.
Desert bighorn have long inhabited the rugged mountain ranges of western Arizona, including the Plomosas.
🐏 Desert Bighorn Sheep
The Plomosa Mountains have supported an important population of desert bighorn sheep.
Arizona wildlife-management records document bighorn surveys and captures in both the northern and southern Plomosa Mountains.
These remarkable animals are superbly adapted to terrain that humans often find extremely difficult.
Their ability to move across steep cliffs and broken rock provides protection from predators, while their physiology allows them to withstand the intense heat and limited water characteristic of western Arizona.
Hikers fortunate enough to see bighorn should observe them from a distance.
Disturbing wildlife in such a demanding environment can force animals to waste valuable energy or leave important habitat.
🌵 Sonoran Desert Vegetation
Ibex Peak lies within the western Sonoran Desert, where rainfall is limited and summer temperatures can be extreme.
Much of the surrounding landscape supports creosote bush scrub, particularly across broad desert flats.
Rocky washes and mountain slopes can support palo verde, desert ironwood, brittlebush, ocotillo, cholla, prickly pear, and scattered columnar cactus.
Vegetation becomes particularly important in washes, where runoff concentrates scarce moisture.
Following favorable winter rains, annual wildflowers can appear across the surrounding desert, although the intensity of these displays varies enormously from year to year.
Even when flowers are absent, the contrast between sparse vegetation and dark rugged mountain rock gives Ibex Peak a stark beauty.
🌄 Views From the Summit
Ibex Peak’s more than 1,000 feet of prominence gives it excellent views despite its modest elevation.
The La Posa Plain spreads across the landscape to the west, with additional desert ranges rising beyond it.
The northern and southern Plomosa Mountains extend along the horizon, while nearby Haystack Peak provides one of the most dramatic close-up views.
On especially clear days, the openness of western Arizona allows sightlines across a remarkably large area.
The summit provides an excellent perspective on the classic Basin and Range landscape: isolated mountains separated by broad, relatively flat desert valleys.
🏜️ Ibex Peak and Haystack Peak
Haystack Peak sits immediately northeast of Ibex Peak and is often paired with it by experienced desert peakbaggers.
The two mountains are separated by less than a mile, but adding Haystack dramatically increases the difficulty of an outing.
Routes on Haystack involve sustained Class 3 scrambling, exposed ledges, complex route-finding, and potentially harder moves than those encountered on a conservative Ibex route.
A combined outing has been described at approximately 5.9 miles with 2,600 feet of elevation gain.
That combination is an advanced desert scrambling trip rather than a normal hiking loop.
Hikers interested only in Ibex Peak should not feel obligated to add Haystack. Ibex provides plenty of challenge on its own.
☀️ Best Time to Hike Ibex Peak
The best season for Ibex Peak is late fall through early spring, roughly November through March.
Winter days in western Arizona can offer cool temperatures, low humidity, and exceptionally clear skies.
February and March can also bring wildflowers following winters with sufficient rainfall.
Summer is a very different matter.
Temperatures around Quartzsite and the lower Colorado River region regularly become dangerously hot, while Ibex Peak provides almost no reliable shade or water.
A steep off-trail scramble across loose rock is a poor place to experience heat illness.
For most hikers, Ibex Peak should be considered a cool-season objective rather than a summer hike.
💧 Carry All Your Water
There is no dependable natural water source on the standard Ibex Peak routes.
Hikers should carry everything they expect to need.
Even during winter, the extremely dry air of western Arizona can lead to dehydration more quickly than expected.
The combination of scrambling, route-finding, rough terrain, and sun exposure also makes the hike more strenuous than its mileage suggests.
Always carry extra water in case route-finding adds time to the day.
🗺️ Navigation Matters
Ibex Peak is an excellent example of why distance alone is a poor measure of hiking difficulty.
A three-mile hike on a maintained forest trail may be straightforward.
Three miles on Ibex can involve rough roads, old mining tracks, cross-country desert travel, loose gullies, cactus, cliffs, and Class 3 scrambling.
Download topographic maps and land-ownership information before leaving pavement.
GPS can be extremely helpful, but hikers should still study the shape of the terrain and understand their intended descent route.
The return trip through desert cliffs can look surprisingly different from above.
🏜️ The Plomosa Mountains
The Plomosa Mountains extend for roughly 25 miles through La Paz County.
Quartzsite lies west of the range, while Bouse is near its northern end.
The mountains form part of the complicated Basin and Range landscape of western Arizona, where long mountain chains alternate with broad desert valleys.
Ibex Peak is one of the principal landmarks of the northern Plomosas.
Farther south, the range rises to considerably greater elevations before eventually reaching its high point at Black Mesa.
Another worthwhile Mountain Field Guide summit in the range is Plomosa Benchmark, a lower but prominent desert peak farther south.
🌟 Why Ibex Peak Is Special
Ibex Peak demonstrates perfectly why a mountain does not need enormous elevation to provide a serious adventure.
Its summit sits below 3,000 feet, yet reaching it can involve rough desert roads, off-trail navigation, loose rock, thick cactus, and genuine Class 3 scrambling.
Its 1,067 feet of prominence gives the mountain an imposing profile and broad summit views.
The surrounding Plomosa Mountains add layers of geological complexity, mining history, desert wildlife, and Sonoran Desert scenery.
Ibex Peak is therefore best suited to experienced hikers who enjoy remote desert peakbagging rather than maintained trails.
Approached during cool weather, with legal access confirmed and an appropriate route carefully researched, it offers one of the more interesting small-mountain adventures in western Arizona.
