Mount Kaweah

🏔️ Overview
Mount Kaweah is a remote high summit in California’s southern Sierra Nevada, rising deep within Sequoia National Park and the Sequoia-Kings Canyon Wilderness. It forms the southern end of the rugged Kaweah Peaks Ridge, a dramatic spur associated with the Great Western Divide.
For generations, Mount Kaweah was generally regarded as the highest summit of the Kaweah Peaks Ridge. Modern high-resolution LiDAR measurements have complicated that long-standing description. Peakbagger currently places Mount Kaweah at 13,807.6 feet (4,208.5 meters), while its updated data place nearby Red Kaweah slightly higher. Mount Kaweah therefore remains one of the great 13,000-foot summits of the southern Sierra, but it should no longer automatically be described as the highest point of the Kaweah group when using the newest elevation data.
The mountain is particularly notable for its isolation from roads and developed trailheads. Reaching it requires a major wilderness journey, usually involving many miles of backpacking followed by a long off-trail ascent.
Mount Kaweah also has an important place in Sierra Nevada exploration history. The first recorded ascent was made in September 1881 by J. W. A. Wright, William B. Wallace, and Frederick H. Wales.

*Peakbagger’s current Mount Kaweah page lists an isolation of 10.55 miles while simultaneously identifying Red Kaweah as the nearest higher neighbor. Current LiDAR-based ListsOfJohn data place Red Kaweah about 1.78 miles away and give Mount Kaweah an isolation of approximately 1.78 miles. Because the Peakbagger fields are presently internally inconsistent, the LiDAR-based 1.78-mile figure is the more geographically consistent value.
📍 Location
Mount Kaweah stands in the remote eastern backcountry of Sequoia National Park, well removed from roads and developed areas. Its summit lies approximately 11 miles west of the main Sierra Nevada crest near Mount Whitney.
The mountain occupies the southern end of the Kaweah Peaks Ridge. This jagged chain extends generally northward toward peaks such as Second Kaweah, Red Kaweah, Black Kaweah, and Kaweah Queen before connecting with the broader Great Western Divide near Triple Divide Peak.
Two major canyon systems emphasize the mountain’s isolation. Big Arroyo lies to the west, while the much deeper Kern River canyon separates the Kaweah country from the main Sierra crest to the east.
Although Mount Whitney is geographically close by straight-line distance, traveling between the two regions on foot requires negotiating enormous vertical relief and complex wilderness terrain.
Mount Kaweah also lies near the headwaters of several important southern Sierra drainage systems. Despite the mountain’s name, much of the immediate Kaweah Peaks region drains eastward toward the Kern River system rather than directly into the Kaweah River.
📏 Elevation & Prominence
Modern LiDAR data have significantly changed the accepted topographic picture of Mount Kaweah.
Peakbagger currently gives the summit an elevation of:
13,807.6 feet (4,208.5 meters)
The figure is based on detailed LiDAR elevation data using the NAVD88 vertical datum.
Older topographic maps commonly listed Mount Kaweah at approximately 13,802 feet, while still older historical sources sometimes gave elevations exceeding 13,800 feet by varying amounts. Differences of several feet are normal when comparing historic surveys, contour-based maps, modern LiDAR, and different vertical datums.
More importantly, newer measurements have changed Mount Kaweah’s relationship with nearby Red Kaweah.
Peakbagger currently gives Red Kaweah an elevation of approximately 13,821 feet, making it slightly higher than Mount Kaweah according to the site’s newest measurements. This reverses the traditional ranking found in many guidebooks and older reference works.
Mount Kaweah’s modern LiDAR-derived prominence is approximately 770–772 feet, dramatically lower than the roughly 2,027-foot prominence reported from older contour-based mapping.

🪨 Geology
Mount Kaweah lies in one of the most geologically distinctive parts of the southern Sierra Nevada.
Much of the Sierra is famous for pale granitic rock belonging to the enormous Sierra Nevada batholith. These intrusive rocks formed when magma cooled deep beneath the surface during the Mesozoic Era and were later exposed by uplift and erosion.
The Kaweah Peaks region is different.
The National Park Service notes that older metamorphic rocks occur within Sequoia National Park as belts and isolated remnants surrounded by younger granitic intrusions. Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks are particularly well exposed around the Kaweah River and Mineral King regions.
The Kaweah Peaks have consequently developed a darker, more broken appearance than many of the classic pale granite summits elsewhere in the High Sierra.
Climbers also know the Kaweahs for loose and fractured rock. This becomes particularly serious on neighboring Black Kaweah, Red Kaweah, and the technical Kaweah Traverse.
Mount Kaweah itself is less technically difficult by its standard western and southwestern slopes, but extensive talus, gravel, and loose rock still characterize much of the upper mountain.
Repeated episodes of glaciation during the Pleistocene further sculpted the surrounding landscape. Ancient glaciers excavated basins, steepened valleys, carved cliffs, and contributed to the dramatic relief surrounding the Kaweah ridge.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
Although Mount Kaweah’s summit is largely barren rock, its lower slopes pass through an important high-elevation ecosystem.
One of the most notable trees in the area is the foxtail pine (Pinus balfouriana).
Foxtail pine has a remarkably restricted distribution. The species occurs only in California, with separate populations in the Klamath Mountains and southern Sierra Nevada. In Sequoia National Park, these trees grow on exposed high-elevation slopes and ridges where few other large plants can survive.
Old foxtail pines grow along the approaches toward Mount Kaweah, particularly around the Big Arroyo and Little Five Lakes country. Some foxtail pines elsewhere in the parks are more than 2,000 years old.
Above the forest, vegetation becomes increasingly sparse. Alpine grasses, low perennial plants, lichens, and other species adapted to short growing seasons occupy protected pockets among rocks and meadows.
High-country wildlife in Sequoia National Park includes:
- Yellow-bellied marmots
- American pikas
- Mule deer
- White-tailed jackrabbits
- Golden-mantled ground squirrels
- Clark’s nutcrackers
- Mountain bluebirds
- American pipits
- Gray-crowned rosy finches
Animals become less abundant as elevation increases and vegetation becomes scarce, but the surrounding basins, meadows, lakes, and subalpine forests provide considerably richer habitat than the summit itself.
🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes
Mount Kaweah has no maintained trail to its summit.
Although the standard ascent is not highly technical under dry summer conditions, reaching the mountain is a serious wilderness undertaking because of the enormous approach distance, elevation gain, route finding, and off-trail travel.
Western Approach from the High Sierra Trail
One of the most straightforward ways to reach the mountain is from the High Sierra Trail in the Big Arroyo area.
Climbers leave the maintained trail near the southwestern side of Mount Kaweah and ascend approximately 3,300 vertical feet toward the summit.
The lower portion may pass through foxtail pine forest, grassy slopes, granite slabs, and small drainage areas. Higher on the mountain, vegetation disappears and the route becomes an extended climb over talus, loose gravel, and broken rock.
The final ascent toward the summit ridge is generally Class 2 under snow-free conditions.
Once the ridge is gained, additional rock hopping leads to the actual high point.
Mineral King Approach
Mineral King provides another major western approach.
A commonly described route begins near the Sawtooth Pass/Timber Gap trailhead and travels toward:
- Glacier Pass
- Spring Lake
- Black Rock Pass or Cyclamen Pass
- Little Five Lakes
- Big Arroyo
- High Sierra Trail
- Mount Kaweah’s southwestern slopes
Glacier Pass can involve Class 2 or Class 3 terrain depending on the exact line and conditions. Snow and cornices can greatly increase its difficulty during early season.
Black Rock Pass provides a longer but more established alternative.
This entire approach is substantial. Some strong climbers have completed Mount Kaweah from Mineral King as an exceptionally long day, but most visitors should consider the mountain a multi-day backpacking objective.
Kaweah Traverse
Mount Kaweah also forms one end of the famous Kaweah Traverse.
The complete ridge traverse connects Mount Kaweah with numerous summits and pinnacles extending toward Black Kaweah. It is fundamentally different from the standard Mount Kaweah ascent.
The technical portions include exposed climbing, complicated route finding, and notoriously loose rock. The original major traverse was completed in 1997 by Andy Selters, Claude Fiddler, and Danny Whitmore.
This is an advanced alpine climbing objective rather than an ordinary hiking route.
🏔️ Field Guide Tip: Do not underestimate Mount Kaweah simply because its standard summit slope is mostly Class 2. The difficulty lies in the combination of extreme approach distance, wilderness navigation, loose rock, elevation, weather exposure, and the absence of a maintained summit trail. Carry reliable navigation, start with a conservative turnaround plan, and check current Sequoia National Park trail and wilderness conditions before departure.
Wilderness Permits
Overnight trips into the Sequoia-Kings Canyon Wilderness require a wilderness permit.
During the 2026 quota season, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks require reservations or available walk-up permits according to trailhead quotas. Rules, fees, access, and quota dates can change from year to year.
Anyone planning a Mount Kaweah trip should verify current requirements directly with the National Park Service before departure.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
For most non-winter ascents, the most practical period is generally July through September, but conditions vary considerably with annual snowpack.
July
July offers long daylight hours and increasingly snow-free trails, but significant snow can remain on high passes following heavy winters.
Creek crossings may also remain swollen by snowmelt.
August
August often provides the most consistently snow-free conditions on the standard Mount Kaweah slopes.
However, afternoon thunderstorms can develop during summer. Lightning is a serious hazard on exposed ridges and summits.
September
September can provide excellent climbing conditions, with cooler temperatures and fewer insects.
Days become shorter and nighttime temperatures fall rapidly. Early-season snowstorms are also possible.
Early Summer
May and June often involve extensive snow at higher elevations. Passes such as Glacier Pass can become substantially more dangerous when covered by steep snow or cornices.
Fall and Winter
October conditions vary dramatically. Stable autumn weather can occasionally provide excellent climbing, but winter storms may arrive quickly.
Winter turns Mount Kaweah into a major snow and mountaineering objective. Deep snow, avalanche terrain, extremely long approaches, and limited road access make winter ascents far more serious.

Red Kaweah
Red Kaweah rises immediately north-northeast of Mount Kaweah.
Modern LiDAR measurements indicate that Red Kaweah is slightly higher than Mount Kaweah, overturning the traditional ranking of the two summits.
Its climbing routes are considerably more serious because of loose, exposed rock.
Black Kaweah
Black Kaweah is one of the most recognizable summits of the Kaweah Peaks Ridge.
Its steep dark walls and notoriously fractured rock make it a considerably more technical objective than Mount Kaweah.
Kaweah Queen
Kaweah Queen lies farther north along the ridge system near the connection with the Great Western Divide.
The surrounding region contains some of the most rugged terrain in Sequoia National Park.
Triple Divide Peak
Triple Divide Peak stands near the northern connection between the Kaweah Peaks Ridge and Great Western Divide.
The mountain occupies an unusually important hydrological position near divides feeding major California watersheds.
Mount Whitney
Across the Kern River canyon lies Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in California and the contiguous United States.
Although only about 11 miles from the Kaweah region in a straight line, the intervening canyon makes overland travel considerably longer and more difficult.
Little Five Lakes
Little Five Lakes forms one of the most scenic sections of the western approach.
The alpine basin contains lakes, meadows, foxtail pine, and outstanding views toward the Kaweah Peaks.
Mineral King
Mineral King is a remote glacial valley in the southern portion of Sequoia National Park.
It provides trail access toward Black Rock Pass, Sawtooth Pass, Little Five Lakes, and several possible approaches into the Kaweah backcountry.
