Rover Peak

Rover Peak is a rugged, little-visited summit in the mountains north of Cave Creek, Arizona, rising above the remote backcountry between the Verde River Valley and the New River Mountains. Modern lidar measurements place the summit at approximately 5,270 feet (1,606 meters), with about 929 feet (283 meters) of topographic prominence.
Located in Yavapai County within Tonto National Forest, Rover Peak is close enough to metropolitan Phoenix to be reached on a day trip, yet the mountain feels surprisingly isolated. There is no maintained hiking trail to the summit, and the usual approaches involve Forest Service roads, old mining tracks, cross-country travel, loose rock, and sections of dense brush.
Rover Peak is particularly interesting geologically. Detailed mapping by the Arizona Geological Survey found that the Rover Peak area is dominated by ancient metarhyolite, part of a complex assemblage of Precambrian metamorphic rocks within Arizona’s central Transition Zone.

Rover Peak rises in an intriguing group of mountains north of Phoenix and east of the better-known Cave Creek and Carefree communities.
The landscape here is considerably wilder than its proximity to a major metropolitan area might suggest.
Rugged ridges extend north toward Blackjack Point and the Cedar Mountains, while lower country drops eastward toward the Verde River. The New River Mountains form the western horizon.
Rover Peak itself sits along a long mountainous spine. It does not have the dramatic cliffs of some Arizona peaks, but its considerable prominence allows it to stand distinctly above the surrounding ridges.

An Arizona Geological Survey study of the Cedar Mountains, Bloody Basin, Cooks Mesa, and Rover Peak quadrangle found extraordinarily diverse rocks ranging from Proterozoic basement formations to much younger Cenozoic volcanic deposits.
The Rover Peak area itself is dominated by ancient metamorphic rock.
Researchers identified a highly altered rock called metarhyolite as the principal basement unit around the peak.
This rock originated as rhyolitic volcanic material before later heat, pressure, deformation, and mineral alteration transformed it into metamorphic rock.

The metarhyolite surrounding Rover Peak is strikingly old.
It belongs to Arizona’s Early Proterozoic basement, meaning its geological history extends back well over a billion years.
Arizona Geological Survey researchers described the Rover Peak metarhyolite as relatively coarse-grained and containing substantial altered feldspar.
Some samples contain clearly visible feldspar crystals, while quartz and feldspar occur together in the surrounding groundmass.
Muscovite is also present in varying amounts.
The region forms part of Arizona’s Proterozoic Central Volcanic Belt, an ancient crustal province containing metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks.

Move north from Rover Peak and the geology changes again.
Arizona Geological Survey researchers documented several forms of slate in the Cougar Canyon area.

Ancient metamorphic rocks are only part of the story.
Millions of years later, volcanic activity spread lava across parts of the surrounding Transition Zone.
Basalt flows now cap nearby mesas and tilted fault blocks, particularly around the Cedar Mountains and Cooks Mesa.
Geological research has dated important local basalt flows to approximately 15.1 to 13.5 million years ago.
Later basalt, around 6.4 million years old, accumulated after much of the region’s major fault-block rotation had occurred.

Rover Peak also lies close to one of central Arizona’s important zones of crustal extension.
East of Cooks Mesa, numerous normal faults created tilted blocks as Earth’s crust stretched.
The Arizona Geological Survey identified the Cooks Mesa fault as a major structure separating relatively undisturbed terrain to the west from faulted and rotated blocks to the east.
The researchers named the larger down-dropped structural corridor the Lower Verde Valley graben.
This graben extends generally along the Verde River country toward Bloody Basin.
The surrounding faulting was associated with the broader tectonic processes responsible for development of Arizona’s Basin and Range landscape.
Although Rover Peak itself is dominated by much older basement rock, its modern surroundings were profoundly reshaped during this much younger phase of extension.

One of Rover Peak’s most interesting neighbors is the historic Red Rover Mine, located immediately south of the mountain.
The mine was one of the notable mineral producers of the Cave Creek area.
According to the Arizona Memory Project, the Red Rover was discovered in 1882 and produced particularly rich copper and silver ores.
More than 5,000 tons of ore were mined in 1929, and during a 14-month period in 1934 and 1935 the operation reportedly produced more than $45,000 worth of copper and silver.
The mine’s mill stopped operating in 1941, and large-scale activity eventually ended in 1949.

There is no need to enter the mine property to climb the mountain.
Hikers should stay on legal public routes, respect gates and signs, and avoid mine workings altogether.
Old mines can contain unstable structures, shafts, contaminated water, loose rock, and other serious hazards even where access is legally permitted.

There is no maintained trail to the summit of Rover Peak.
One well-documented ascent completed in December 2020 covered approximately:
- 8.2 miles round trip
- 2,080 feet of cumulative elevation gain
- About five hours
The route began from an old road system branching east from Forest Road 24.
The first several miles followed roads through Walnut Spring Canyon toward the Red Rover Mine area.
Rather than entering the private mine property, the climber used a separate track and eventually left the old road system for a cross-country climb to the ridge.
The final approach involved steep grassy slopes, scattered cactus, loose rocks, brush, fences, and several small intermediate ridge points.
This should be considered one documented route rather than an official or permanently established trail.
Road access, property boundaries, gates, and road conditions can change.

Once off the old roads, Rover Peak becomes a genuine off-trail hike.
The terrain is not technically difficult in the mountaineering sense, but it presents several persistent obstacles.
Loose rocks are one of the most noticeable.
A documented climber repeatedly described rocks rolling underfoot during both ascent and descent.
Brush becomes thicker near portions of the summit ridge, occasionally requiring hikers to search for openings or push through vegetation.

The final summit climb gains roughly 200 additional feet from the last saddle.
No ropes or technical climbing equipment are normally required on the documented southern approach, but strong navigation and confident off-trail hiking skills are important.

Blackjack Point reaches approximately 5,387 feet and occupies the eastern edge of Cooks Mesa.

Like Rover Peak, Blackjack Point has no conventional developed summit trail and is primarily a backcountry peakbagging destination.

Continue northeast from Blackjack Point and the terrain rises toward West Cedar Mountain.
West Cedar reaches roughly 5,488 feet, but its approximately 1,788 feet of prominence makes it much more topographically independent than Rover Peak.
