Rising to 3,220 meters (10,565 feet) above the lakes, glaciers, and limestone valleys of western Valais, Tour Sallière is one of the most distinctive high mountains in southwestern Switzerland. Its enormous three-sided pyramid rises between Lac de Salanfe, Lac d’Émosson, the Susanfe basin, and Grand Mont Ruan near the French border.
Unlike the crystalline giants farther east around Zermatt, Tour Sallière is fundamentally a limestone mountain. Its upper structure consists largely of massive Upper Jurassic limestone belonging to the Morcles nappe, an enormous folded and thrust sheet created during formation of the Alps. Layers of harder limestone alternate with softer marls, producing the mountain’s dramatic sequence of cliffs, ledges, and terraces.
The Swiss Alpine Club describes Tour Sallière as a gigantic three-faced pyramid. Its rocky southern side faces Lac d’Émosson, its glaciated northwest side rises above Susanfe, and its huge eastern face—the Grand Revers—rises approximately 1,300 meters above Lac de Salanfe. The SAC currently warns that the entire Grand Revers should be avoided because of unstable terrain.
Topographically, Tour Sallière is also significant. High-resolution Swiss lidar used by Peakbagger gives an elevation of approximately 3,220.2 meters, a prominence of about 727 meters (2,385 feet), and a key col at Col de Susanfe, approximately 2,493 meters above sea level. Its Nearest Higher Neighbor is Haute Cime, the 3,257-meter high point of the Dents du Midi, roughly 3.8 kilometers to the north.
The first ascent is usually dated to 1858, but the exact composition of the first summit party is surprisingly uncertain. Nineteenth-century accounts credit Champéry guides Julien Rey and Joseph Oberhauser, with one historical source giving the date as June 30, 1858. Later summaries add other names, but a Swiss Alpine Club historical review explicitly described the attribution as unresolved. For that reason, “first recorded ascent: 1858” is safer than presenting one four-person list as unquestionably established.
Tour Sallière can be reached from both the Émosson and Susanfe sides, but it is not a casual hiking summit. The Swiss Alpine Club’s current route from Lac d’Émosson via the southeast ridge is graded T6, the highest level on the Swiss mountain-hiking scale, and requires approximately five to six hours of ascent with about 1,380 meters of elevation gain.

📍 Where Is Tour Sallière?
Tour Sallière lies in southwestern Switzerland, within the canton of Valais.
The summit is completely within Swiss territory, although the French border lies only a short distance to the west around Grand Mont Ruan.
Several important landscapes surround the mountain.
To the northeast lies:

🗺️ Chablais Alps or Giffre Massif?
Tour Sallière is commonly described as belonging to the Chablais Alps, while more detailed regional classifications place it within the Giffre or Haut-Giffre massif.
These labels are not mutually exclusive.
The Giffre massif forms part of the broader Savoy Prealps and western Alpine landscape straddling Switzerland and France.
The Swiss Alpine Club treats Tour Sallière as part of the Franco-Swiss chain extending between the Col des Montets and Lake Geneva.
For Mountain Field Guide, the clearest description is:

🏔️ Second-Highest Major Summit of the Area
Tour Sallière reaches:
3,220 meters / 10,565 feet
Its nearest higher major summit is Haute Cime, the highest point of the Dents du Midi, at approximately:
3,257 meters / 10,686 feet
Only about 37 meters separate the two elevations.
Tour Sallière therefore comes remarkably close to matching the highest summit of the neighboring Dents du Midi.
The two mountains face one another across Col de Susanfe and frame the western side of the Salanfe basin.

Traditional Swiss mapping gives Tour Sallière an elevation of:

3,220.2 meters / 10,565 feet
This is a useful example of why older sources may differ by a meter or two.
For normal publication, 3,220 meters is appropriate.
The decimal lidar figure is useful when discussing prominence and topographic relationships.
📐 Topographic Prominence
Modern Swiss lidar gives Tour Sallière approximately:
727 meters / 2,385 feet
of clean topographic prominence.
Older Mountain Field Guide material gave approximately 726 meters, which was reasonable based on older elevation datasets but can now be refined.
The key col is:
Col de Susanfe — approximately 2,493.2 meters
Prominence is calculated by subtracting the key-col elevation from the summit elevation:
3,220.2 m − 2,493.2 m ≈ 727 m
This gives Tour Sallière substantial independent relief even though it stands beside the slightly higher Dents du Midi.
🧭 Key Col: Col de Susanfe
The Col de Susanfe lies north of Tour Sallière between the mountain and Haute Cime.
Peakbagger’s lidar data give the col an elevation of approximately:
2,493.2 meters / 8,180 feet
The pass is also one of the major walking connections between:
- Lac de Salanfe
- Susanfe
- Champéry region
The official Tour des Dents du Midi passes through the col.
Geologically, Col de Susanfe is especially interesting because erosion excavated the pass within softer Cretaceous marly layers, while harder limestone forms the high mountains on either side.
The mountain and the pass therefore provide a textbook example of differential erosion.
🌍 Topographic Isolation
Tour Sallière has approximately:
3.8 kilometers / 2.4 miles
of topographic isolation.
The nearest higher terrain lies on:
Haute Cime of the Dents du Midi
This short distance reflects the close relationship between the two mountains.
However, Tour Sallière’s 727 meters of prominence shows that a deep enough saddle separates it from Haute Cime for the mountain to remain a major independent summit.

🧭 Nearest Higher Neighbor: Haute Cime
The Nearest Higher Neighbor is Haute Cime.
Haute Cime reaches approximately:
3,257 meters / 10,686 feet
and is the highest of the seven principal summits of the Dents du Midi.
The two mountains dominate opposite sides of Col de Susanfe.
From the Salanfe basin, they form an enormous natural amphitheater around the lake and plateau.
Tour Sallière rises on the west.
The Dents du Midi form the northern wall.
🔺 A Giant Three-Sided Pyramid
The Swiss Alpine Club describes Tour Sallière as an enormous three-faced pyramid.
Each side has a completely different character.
Southern Face
The south side is:
- Rocky
- Steep
- Oriented toward Lac d’Émosson
This side provides access to the southeast-ridge route.
Northwest Face
The northwest side is:
- Snowier
- More glaciated
- Oriented toward Susanfe
Historic mountaineering routes cross this side.
East Face
The eastern side contains the enormous:
Grand Revers
This wall rises approximately 1,300 meters above Lac de Salanfe.
It is one of the mountain’s most impressive features.
🧱 Grand Revers
The Grand Revers forms the immense eastern wall of Tour Sallière.
Seen from Salanfe, the face appears as a gigantic staircase of pale limestone walls and darker ledges.
The Swiss Alpine Club historically lists a direct route on the face at approximately:

However, the current SAC description is much more important than the historical grade.
It states that the entire eastern face should be avoided because of unstable terrain.
This warning reflects the underlying geology.
Hard limestone cliffs are separated by softer marly layers that weather more quickly.
Rockfall and structural instability can therefore make the face far more dangerous than its climbing difficulty alone would suggest.
🪨 Geology of Tour Sallière
Tour Sallière has exceptionally clear and interesting geology.
The mountain belongs largely to the:
Morcles nappe
This enormous tectonic sheet also forms much of the neighboring Dents du Midi.
Tour Sallière is built predominantly from massive Upper Jurassic limestone, while the Dents du Midi contain extensive younger Cretaceous limestone.
The distinction is clearly visible in geological mapping of the Salanfe basin.

🌍 What Is the Morcles Nappe?
A nappe is a huge sheet of rock transported over other rocks by tectonic forces.
During formation of the Alps, continental collision compressed sedimentary layers that had accumulated along ancient continental margins.
The rocks were:
- Folded
- Faulted
- Thrust
- Stacked
- Uplifted
Some travelled enormous distances from where they originally formed.
The Morcles nappe is one of the classic examples of Alpine fold-and-thrust geology.
Tour Sallière lies near the core of this spectacular structure.
🔄 A Giant Recumbent Fold
University of Lausanne geological work describes Tour Sallière as lying within the inverted limb and core of a major recumbent fold in the Morcles nappe.
A recumbent fold is essentially a fold that has been pushed so far sideways that its axial structure becomes nearly horizontal.
This means some rock layers at Tour Sallière have effectively been turned upside down during Alpine deformation.
The present cliffs expose the interior architecture of that giant fold.
The mountain is therefore valuable not only to climbers but also to structural geologists.
🪨 Upper Jurassic Limestone
The structural backbone of Tour Sallière consists largely of massive limestone dating from the:
Upper Jurassic
These rocks originally formed from sediments deposited in ancient marine environments.
Over time, carbonate sediments hardened into limestone.
Millions of years later, Alpine tectonic forces folded and transported those rocks high into the mountains.
What is now a summit more than three kilometers above sea level began as sediment accumulating beneath an ancient sea.
🪨 Tithonian Limestone
Detailed geological mapping identifies much of Tour Sallière’s summit pyramid with Tithonian-age limestone.
The Tithonian is the final stage of the Late Jurassic Period.
That places these summit rocks roughly within the neighborhood of:
150 million years old
The precise age varies between individual formations and layers.
These ancient limestones are significantly older than the modern Alps.
The rock existed long before the mountain itself acquired its present shape.
🧱 Limestone and Marl
One of the most visually striking features of Tour Sallière is the alternating sequence of:
- Massive limestone cliffs
- Softer marly ledges
Marl contains a mixture of carbonate and clay.
It generally erodes faster than massive limestone.
Over time, differential erosion creates:
Cliff → ledge → cliff → ledge
patterns.
University of Lausanne researchers specifically identify this structure as one of the defining geomorphological characteristics of Tour Sallière.
Snow often highlights the ledges, making the folded geological layering particularly visible.
🏔️ Why Does Tour Sallière Look Layered?
The mountain’s staircase appearance is not simply a result of random erosion.
It directly reflects variations in rock hardness.
Hard limestone forms:
- Vertical walls
- Ridges
- Towers
Softer marl forms:
- Benches
- Terraces
- Gullies
- Passes
This process is called differential erosion.
Tour Sallière is an especially clear Alpine example because the rocks have also been intensely folded.
The visible layers therefore record both ancient sedimentation and later tectonic deformation.
🌊 An Ancient Marine Landscape
The limestone composing Tour Sallière formed in marine environments that existed long before the Alps.
Sediments accumulated on or near the margin of the ancient European continent.
Marine organisms contributed carbonate material.
Over millions of years, sediments compacted and cemented into rock.
Later, movement between Africa, the Adriatic region, and Europe closed Alpine ocean basins and compressed the sedimentary sequence.
The sea-floor rock eventually became the summit of Tour Sallière.
🏔️ Formation of the Alps
The Alps developed through prolonged convergence between the European and African-Adriatic tectonic regions.
As ocean basins closed, rock units were thrust over one another.
This produced enormous structures including the Morcles nappe.
Continued uplift raised the mountains.
Erosion then removed overlying rock and exposed the folded structure.
Tour Sallière’s modern pyramid is therefore the combined product of:
- Marine sedimentation
- Continental collision
- Folding
- Thrusting
- Uplift
- Glacial erosion
- Frost weathering
- Rockfall
🧊 Ice Age Glaciers
Glaciers dramatically reshaped the Tour Sallière landscape.
The Salanfe basin is an enormous glacial amphitheater covering roughly 21–22 square kilometers.
Local geographical research describes the basin as having been excavated by the former Tour Sallière glacier system during the Würm glacial period.
At its greatest extent, thick glacier ice filled the high basin.
As the climate warmed and the ice retreated, it left behind:
- Cirques
- Moraines
- Smoothed bedrock
- Depositional plains
- Glacially deepened basins
The modern Lac de Salanfe occupies part of this glacial landscape.
🧊 Salanfe Glacial Basin
The Salanfe plateau lies at roughly 1,900 meters.
During the Ice Age, glacier erosion excavated softer geological formations while resistant rocks remained as steps and barriers.
After glacier retreat, a natural lake occupied part of the basin.
Sediment carried by streams gradually filled much of the original lake.
The present reservoir is artificial, but the underlying basin is fundamentally a natural glacial landform.
💧 Lac de Salanfe
Lac de Salanfe sits immediately east of Tour Sallière.
Today it is a hydroelectric reservoir.
Its elevation is approximately:
1,900–1,925 meters, depending on water level and reference source.
Hydroelectric development entered service around the middle of the twentieth century.
The lake now forms one of the defining landscapes surrounding Tour Sallière.
From the Salanfe plateau, the enormous Grand Revers rises directly above the western shore.

💧 Lac d’Émosson
On the other side of Tour Sallière lies Lac d’Émosson.
The large hydroelectric reservoir occupies the southwestern side of the massif near the French border.
It provides the most practical starting point for the current SAC-listed southeast-ridge route.
The combination of Salanfe and Émosson gives Tour Sallière an unusual setting between two major high-altitude reservoirs.
🧊 Glacier Noir
A small glacier called the Glacier Noir survives on the eastern side of Tour Sallière.
University of Lausanne geomorphological research describes it as a wall glacier.
Ice falling or flowing from the wall created a regenerated glacier below, leaving substantial historical moraines.
The glacier has retreated considerably compared with earlier periods.
Its deposits remain an important part of the Salanfe landscape.
🧊 Confusing Glacier Names
Even the Swiss Alpine Club notes that glacier nomenclature around the Grand Revers is unsatisfactory.
According to the SAC, the debris-covered regenerated ice at the base of the wall would logically deserve the name Glacier Noir, while the feature currently shown by that name on Swiss maps might more clearly be called Glacier du Grand Revers.
For a general profile, the safest approach is simply to refer to:
Glacier Noir on the eastern Tour Sallière wall
without trying to redefine official map names.
🧊 No Large Summit Glacier Today
Tour Sallière remains snowy and glaciated in places, but it no longer carries the extensive ice that shaped its surrounding valleys.
Modern glaciation survives mainly as:
- Small wall glaciers
- Snowfields
- Remnant ice
- Regenerated ice below cliffs
The mountain’s glaciers are much smaller than major Swiss ice systems such as the Aletsch or Gorner glaciers.
However, snow and ice remain important mountaineering hazards.
🏆 First Recorded Ascent
Tour Sallière was first climbed in:
1858
But unlike many famous Alpine summits, the exact first-ascent record is not completely settled.
A Swiss Alpine Club historical investigation published in 1910 reviewed several nineteenth-century sources and described the issue as unresolved.
That makes Tour Sallière an interesting example of how early mountaineering history can become uncertain when expeditions were poorly documented.
🧗 Julien Rey and Joseph Oberhauser
The strongest early accounts credit two Champéry guides:
- Julien Rey
- Joseph Oberhauser
John Ball’s Western Alps reported that the summit had first been reached by Oberhauser and Julien Rey.
A later edition added that they had guided a Swiss traveler.
Gottlieb Studer subsequently gave the date:
June 30, 1858
and again credited Rey and Oberhauser.
Because the primary documentation is incomplete, even the Swiss Alpine Club declined to state the matter with absolute certainty.
📜 Why Do Some Sources List Four First Ascenders?
Modern summaries often list:
- H. Marguerat
- J. Oberhauser
- J. Rey
- E. Gonet
as the first summit party.
However, the 1910 Swiss Alpine Club investigation into the mountain’s climbing history did not establish this four-person attribution.
Its early sources instead emphasized Rey, Oberhauser, and possibly an unnamed Swiss traveler.
For Mountain Field Guide, the most historically responsible wording is:
First recorded ascent: 1858, traditionally associated with Julien Rey and Joseph Oberhauser; exact first-party composition remains disputed.
🧗 Early Route
Later climbing histories commonly associate the first ascent with the northwestern side of Tour Sallière.
The northwest face and ridge rise above Susanfe and have long provided mountaineering access.
Historic route classifications include:
- Northwest side — PD
- North ridge — PD+
- South side — PD
- Glacier Noir / L’Épaule — PD
- Northeast spur — AD
- Emaney ridge — D
- Complete ridge traverse — D
- Grand Revers — TD-
These grades come from historical SAC guide material and should not be assumed to describe current conditions.
🧗 1907 East-Face Route
The direct east face was first climbed in 1907 by a party commonly listed as:
- Émile-Robert Blanchet
- Jean Chaubert
- E. Revaz
- A. Coquoz
The line climbs the enormous Grand Revers.
Historically, it became one of the mountain’s major technical routes.
Today, however, the current Swiss Alpine Club description warns against the entire east face because of unstable terrain.
Historical achievement does not make the route advisable under modern conditions.
🥾 Can You Hike Tour Sallière?
This requires an important distinction.
The Swiss Alpine Club currently places the southeast-ridge route within its mountain hiking portal rather than its ordinary alpinism section.
However, the route is graded:
T6
T6 is the highest level of the SAC mountain-hiking scale.
It should never be confused with an ordinary marked hiking trail.
T6 terrain can require:
- Excellent route-finding
- Very sure footing
- Experience in exposed Alpine terrain
- Use of hands for climbing
- Ability to evaluate snow conditions
- Strong head for heights
Depending on snow and ice, mountaineering equipment may also become necessary.
🥾 Southeast Ridge from Lac d’Émosson
The current SAC-listed summer route approaches Tour Sallière from:
Lac d’Émosson
and follows the southeast ridge.
The Swiss Alpine Club gives approximately:
- Grade: T6
- Ascent: 5–6 hours
- Descent: 3¾–4¾ hours
- Elevation gain: 1,380 meters
The route passes through a wild and largely unmarked high-mountain landscape.
It should be attempted only by people with extensive Alpine experience.
🏔️ The Emosson Approach
The approach begins near the Émosson reservoir.
From there, climbers or expert hikers travel around the lake before entering the high terrain north of the reservoir.
The route eventually climbs toward the southeast side of Tour Sallière.
The upper ridge becomes increasingly exposed.
Rock quality requires attention.
Snow can remain in gullies and shaded areas even when lower trails are completely dry.
🛖 Cabane de Susanfe
The Cabane de Susanfe lies at approximately:
2,102 meters
north of Tour Sallière.
It provides an important base for:
- Dents du Midi
- Haute Cime
- Tour Sallière
- Ruan area
- Tour des Dents du Midi
Approaches to Tour Sallière from the Susanfe side historically used the northwest face or north ridge.
The hut also gives hikers access to Col de Susanfe and the Salanfe basin.
🧗 Northwest Side
Historic SAC guide material grades the northwest side approximately:
PD
The north ridge is listed around:
PD+
Both routes belong to traditional Alpine mountaineering rather than ordinary hiking.
Snow conditions have a major influence on difficulty.
Loose sedimentary rock can also create problems once snow disappears.
Anyone considering these lines should consult current SAC route information and local mountain professionals.
🧗 Emaney Ridge
The Emaney Ridge is considerably more serious.
Historic SAC grading:
D
The ridge forms part of Tour Sallière’s complex eastern and southeastern ridge system.
Routes of this level require substantial experience with technical Alpine climbing.
They are not simply more difficult alternatives for hikers seeking a quieter route.
⚠️ Rockfall
Rockfall is one of the defining hazards of Tour Sallière.
The reason lies partly in its geology.
Repeated freezing and thawing breaks fractured limestone apart.
Marly layers weather more quickly than the harder limestone above them.
This can undermine blocks and cliffs.
The east face is especially problematic.
The current Swiss Alpine Club specifically identifies terrain instability as a reason to avoid the Grand Revers.
⚠️ Snow and Ice
Snow conditions change the mountain dramatically.
Early in the season, approaches can cross large snowfields.
Hard snow can require:
- Crampons
- Ice axe
- Fall-arrest skills
Later in summer, melting snow may expose loose rock beneath.
Neither snow-covered nor completely dry conditions are automatically safer.
The appropriate equipment depends on current conditions.
⚠️ Route-Finding
Tour Sallière is less heavily travelled than famous Swiss mountains such as the Matterhorn or Breithorn.
Trails and route markings become limited in the upper mountain.
The current southeast route is classified T6 partly because navigation can be demanding.
Hikers should be comfortable with:
- Topographic maps
- Offline GPS
- Compass use
- Terrain interpretation

🌦️ Weather
Tour Sallière stands near the western edge of the Swiss Alps, where weather can arrive rapidly from both Atlantic and Alpine systems.
Possible hazards include:
- Thunderstorms
- Strong wind
- Sudden cloud
- Snow
- Hail
- Heavy rain
The exposed summit pyramid provides little shelter.
Poor visibility can make route-finding substantially harder.
Early starts are especially valuable on long summer routes where afternoon thunderstorms are possible.
🌿 Flora and Fauna
Tour Sallière rises from one of the most biologically attractive high-Alpine landscapes of western Valais.
The summit itself supports very little vegetation.
Above roughly 2,500 meters, the landscape increasingly consists of:
- Limestone scree
- Cliffs
- Snow
- Alpine turf
- Small glaciers
Lower areas around Salanfe contain much richer alpine pasture.
The Salanfe basin is particularly well known for wildflowers and wildlife.
🌸 Alpine Flowers
Summer transforms the Salanfe plateau into a colorful alpine landscape.
Plants in the wider Dents du Midi–Salanfe region include hardy species adapted to limestone, scree, snow, and short growing seasons.
Characteristic high-Alpine plants can include:
- Gentians
- Saxifrages
- Alpine buttercups
- Snow willow
- Mountain pennycress
- Artemisia
Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse toward 3,000 meters.
Plants surviving near the summit are restricted to protected cracks and tiny patches of soil.
🌱 Limestone Flora
Limestone creates alkaline soils that support different vegetation from nearby crystalline gneiss terrain.
This contributes to the ecological diversity of the Salanfe basin.
Within a relatively short distance, hikers move among:
- Limestone cliffs
- Marly slopes
- Gneiss
- Wetlands
- Alpine pasture
- Glacial deposits
Each substrate holds water and nutrients differently.
This geological variety helps create diverse plant communities.
🐐 Alpine Ibex
Alpine ibex are among the most characteristic mammals around Salanfe.
The animals favor:
- Steep cliffs
- Rocky slopes
- Open alpine terrain
Their exceptional balance allows them to move across slopes that appear nearly impossible.
Ibex are frequently photographed around the Salanfe region.
They remain well below Tour Sallière’s actual summit for most of the year.
🐐 Chamois
Chamois also inhabit the wider western Valais mountains.
They move between:
- Alpine pasture
- Scree
- Rocky ridges

💧 Hydroelectric Landscape
The Tour Sallière region presents an unusual combination of natural and engineered Alpine landscapes.
Both Lac de Salanfe and Lac d’Émosson are major reservoirs.
Hydroelectric development altered water levels and portions of the surrounding landscape.
At Salanfe, filling of the reservoir also revealed an unusual connection with regional groundwater.
Geological research found evidence suggesting that water from the Salanfe basin contributes to thermal springs in the neighboring Val d’Illiez.
The mountain therefore sits within an unusually interesting hydrological system as well as a tectonic one.
