The Swiss Alps stretch across southern and central Switzerland, forming a broad mountain belt between the Swiss Plateau to the north and Italy to the south.

Dufourspitze deserves special clarification. Its summit lies in Switzerland, making it the country’s highest point. However, Dufourspitze belongs to the enormous Monte Rosa massif, much of which extends across the Swiss–Italian border.

The Swiss Alps are the product of one of Earth’s great continental collisions.
Their development resulted from the convergence of the African and European lithospheric plates, together with smaller crustal blocks associated with the Adriatic region. As the intervening branches of the ancient Tethys Ocean closed, enormous masses of sedimentary and continental rock were compressed, folded, faulted, metamorphosed, and thrust over one another.
Major Alpine mountain-building processes began tens of millions of years ago and created an extremely complicated geological structure.
The rocks exposed across the Swiss Alps therefore vary considerably. They include:
