Puʻu Aliʻi is a remote high point on the rugged island of Molokaʻi in Hawaiʻi, rising above the immense sea cliffs and deeply carved valleys of the island’s eastern volcanic highlands. Located within Kalawao County and the boundaries of Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the mountain is surrounded by one of Hawaiʻi’s most ecologically important native forest landscapes.

Official National Park Service information places the summit at approximately 4,222 feet (1,287 meters), while Peakbagger uses an elevation of 4,199 feet (1,280 meters) for its Puʻu Aliʻi county-high-point entry.

Unlike nearby Kamakou, which reaches 4,961 feet and is the true highest point on Molokaʻi, Puʻu Aliʻi is not a strongly independent summit. Instead, it forms part of the broad, elevated East Molokaʻi volcanic massif. Its importance comes from its position as the highest point in Kalawao County, its volcanic setting, and the extraordinary native ecosystems protected around it.

The two commonly cited elevations should not be confused with the 4,961-foot elevation of Kamakou, which is Molokaʻi’s true island high point. The older Mountain Field Guide profile incorrectly blended these two summits.

📍 Where Is Puʻu Aliʻi?

Puʻu Aliʻi rises in the mountainous eastern half of Molokaʻi, one of the main Hawaiian Islands.

The mountain lies within Kalawao County, the unusual small county encompassing the Kalaupapa Peninsula and surrounding northern Molokaʻi landscape. The Puʻu Aliʻi plateau occupies the southeastern portion of Kalaupapa National Historical Park, between the spectacular Pelekunu and Waikolu valleys.

The terrain is extremely rugged.

North of the summit, the land falls toward Molokaʻi’s enormous sea cliffs and the Pacific Ocean. To the south, the high forest continues toward Kamakou, the highest point on the island.

The Puʻu Aliʻi Natural Area Reserve protects approximately 1,330 acres surrounding the summit and upper plateau. Its southern boundary meets the Kamakou Preserve, creating a large connected area of protected native forest across the highlands of East Molokaʻi.

📏 How High Is Puʻu Aliʻi?

The National Park Service gives the summit of Puʻu Aliʻi an elevation of approximately 4,222 feet (1,287 meters).

Peakbagger’s county-high-point database uses 4,199 feet (1,280 meters).

These numbers are close enough that the difference is most likely associated with the exact summit point, mapping datasets, contours, and elevation measurement methods.

The important correction is that Puʻu Aliʻi does not rise to 4,961 feet.

That elevation belongs to Kamakou, approximately the highest point of the East Molokaʻi volcanic massif and the entire island.

Puʻu Aliʻi is lower by more than 700 feet.

🏆 The High Point of Kalawao County

Puʻu Aliʻi holds an unusual geographic distinction: it is generally recognized as the highest point in Kalawao County.

Hawaiʻi has only five counties, making Puʻu Aliʻi part of a small group of Hawaiian county high points that also includes Mauna Kea, Haleakalā, Kawaikini, and Kaʻala.

Puʻu Aliʻi is particularly unusual because it is not an independent major mountain.

Peakbagger assigns the feature zero feet of prominence, meaning the mapped high point does not descend to a distinct saddle before connecting with higher terrain.

The landscape continues upward toward the higher East Molokaʻi summit region around Kamakou.

Puʻu Aliʻi is therefore best understood as both a named highland feature and a county high point rather than as a deeply separated standalone mountain.

🧭 Puʻu Aliʻi vs. Kamakou

The distinction between Puʻu Aliʻi and Kamakou is especially important.

Kamakou rises to approximately 4,961 feet (1,512 meters) and is unquestionably the highest point on Molokaʻi.

Puʻu Aliʻi lies north of the Kamakou summit region and reaches approximately 4,200 feet.

Both belong to the same deeply eroded East Molokaʻi Volcano, and their high forests form part of a connected ecological landscape.

This close relationship helps explain why the two have occasionally been confused in secondary references.

Topographically, however, they are very different. Kamakou has essentially the full elevation of Molokaʻi as its prominence because it is the highest summit on an island rising directly from the sea. Puʻu Aliʻi, by contrast, lies along terrain connected directly to the higher Kamakou massif.

🌋 Part of the East Molokaʻi Volcano

Puʻu Aliʻi exists because of the enormous ancient volcano that created eastern Molokaʻi.

The island is primarily composed of two major volcanic masses: West Molokaʻi Volcano and the younger, much larger East Molokaʻi Volcano.

East Molokaʻi once formed a broad shield volcano comparable in basic origin to other Hawaiian volcanoes.

Its foundation consists largely of basaltic lava flows produced as magma rose above the Hawaiian hot spot. Later stages of volcanic activity produced additional rock compositions, including andesitic and trachytic material.

The original volcano was far larger and smoother than the landscape seen today.

Millions of years of erosion, landslides, stream incision, weathering, and coastal collapse have transformed it into a maze of cliffs, ridges, valleys, and high plateaus.

Puʻu Aliʻi occupies part of what remains of this ancient volcanic summit region.

🌎 How Molokaʻi Formed

Molokaʻi is part of the Hawaiian–Emperor volcanic chain, created as the Pacific Plate moves across a relatively stationary source of magma deep beneath the Earth’s crust.

Volcanoes form above this hot spot, gradually move northwestward with the Pacific Plate, become inactive, and then undergo increasingly intense erosion.

This process explains why the Hawaiian Islands display such dramatically different landscapes.

The comparatively young island of Hawaiʻi retains enormous active shield volcanoes such as Mauna Loa and Kīlauea.

Older islands such as Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, and Kauaʻi have been reshaped far more extensively by erosion.

Deep valleys, narrow ridges, sea cliffs, and isolated remnants of the original volcano become increasingly dominant as an island ages.

Puʻu Aliʻi represents this later stage of Hawaiian volcanic evolution.

🪨 Geology of East Molokaʻi

Geologists have studied East Molokaʻi extensively because erosion has exposed the internal structure of the ancient volcano.

Much of the massif consists of basaltic lava, but the volcano also contains younger volcanic rocks and numerous intrusive dikes.

These dikes formed when magma forced its way through fractures within the older volcanic structure and solidified underground.

Erosion has exposed many of them in the walls of Molokaʻi’s enormous valleys.

Geological evidence also indicates that a large caldera once existed near the summit of East Molokaʻi. The ancient depression was more than four miles long, with a smaller pit structure nearby.

Much of this volcanic architecture has since been dissected or removed.

The modern highlands around Kamakou and Puʻu Aliʻi are therefore remnants of a once much larger volcanic mountain.

🌊 Molokaʻi’s Extraordinary Sea Cliffs

One of the defining features of the Puʻu Aliʻi landscape is the abrupt transition from high rainforest to the immense cliffs of northern Molokaʻi.

The northern flank of East Molokaʻi has been deeply cut by erosion and enormous slope failures.

Valleys such as Pelekunu, Wailau, and Waikolu penetrate far into the old volcano, while steep cliffs drop dramatically toward the Pacific.

Puʻu Aliʻi occupies the upland plateau between Pelekunu and Waikolu.

Within the reserve, elevation decreases from more than 4,200 feet near the summit to approximately 2,250 feet near the tops of the northern sea cliffs.

That rapid elevation change contributes to dramatic variations in rainfall, vegetation, soils, and habitat over a relatively short distance.

🌧️ One of Molokaʻi’s Wettest Landscapes

The upper reaches of Puʻu Aliʻi are extremely wet.

Older reserve-management studies found that annual rainfall can be below 70 inches at lower elevations but increase to around 120 inches in the summit region.

Clouds frequently shroud the upper plateau.

Moist air carried by northeastern trade winds rises over the steep East Molokaʻi landscape, cools, and condenses. This process produces heavy rainfall and persistent cloud moisture.

The result is a lush montane environment very different from the much drier western side of Molokaʻi.

This high rainfall is fundamental to the island’s water cycle.

Native forests intercept both direct precipitation and moisture from clouds, while soils and bogs help retain and gradually release water into the island’s drainage systems.

💧 A Vital Watershed

Puʻu Aliʻi forms part of one of Molokaʻi’s most important watershed landscapes.

The native forests surrounding Puʻu Aliʻi and Kamakou capture rainfall and cloud moisture that eventually feeds springs, streams, groundwater systems, and lower-elevation ecosystems.

Immediately south, the 2,774-acre Kamakou Preserve is one of Molokaʻi’s major sources of freshwater.

The Nature Conservancy estimates that the Kamakou watershed provides approximately seven million gallons of water per day to island residents.

Protecting forests around Puʻu Aliʻi therefore has consequences far beyond preserving plants and wildlife.

Healthy upland vegetation slows erosion, improves water infiltration, stabilizes soils, and helps prevent sediment from being washed downstream toward coastal ecosystems and coral reefs.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

The Puʻu Aliʻi Natural Area Reserve protects an exceptional example of native Hawaiian montane forest.

Vegetation surveys have identified several distinct natural communities, including ʻōhiʻa/ʻōlapa montane wet forest, ʻōhiʻa mixed-shrub wet forest, ʻōhiʻa/uluhe forest, ʻōhiʻa-dominated shrubland, and fern-and-shrub cliff communities.

The dominant tree throughout much of the landscape is ʻōhiʻa lehua, one of Hawaiʻi’s most ecologically important native trees.

Ferns, mosses, liverworts, shrubs, sedges, and epiphytic plants flourish beneath the wet forest canopy.

Where damage from invasive mammals has remained limited, the understory can be exceptionally rich.

Historical surveys have documented dozens of rare plant taxa within Puʻu Aliʻi and its immediate surroundings.

The combination of isolation, elevation, rainfall, and millions of years of evolution has allowed species to develop here that occur nowhere else on Earth.

🌺 ʻŌhiʻa Forest

ʻŌhiʻa lehua is particularly important to Puʻu Aliʻi.

The adaptable native tree can grow from near sea level to high mountain environments and occurs in habitats ranging from relatively dry lava fields to extremely wet cloud forests.

At Puʻu Aliʻi, ʻōhiʻa helps form the structural backbone of the montane forest.

Its trunks and branches provide growing surfaces for mosses, ferns, lichens, and other epiphytes, while its flowers provide resources for native birds and insects.

Healthy ʻōhiʻa forests also protect the watershed by slowing rainfall and helping soils absorb water.

The spread of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, a devastating fungal disease affecting Hawaiian forests, has made careful biosecurity increasingly important throughout the islands.

Visitors to sensitive native forests should clean footwear and equipment to reduce the risk of transporting soil, seeds, pathogens, and invasive organisms.

🐦 Native Forest Birds

Puʻu Aliʻi has historically supported an extraordinary community of Hawaiian forest birds.

Older biological surveys documented species including the ʻapapane, Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi, ʻiʻiwi, olomaʻo, and kākāwahie within the forests of eastern Molokaʻi.

Unfortunately, Molokaʻi’s native bird community has undergone severe declines.

Habitat changes, introduced predators, invasive species, and diseases such as avian malaria have placed enormous pressure on birds that evolved for millions of years without many of these threats.

Recent U.S. Geological Survey work notes that only two native honeycreeper species—Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi and ʻapapane—are known to persist in the remaining forest-bird habitats surveyed on Molokaʻi.

The story of Puʻu Aliʻi is therefore not simply one of extraordinary biodiversity. It also illustrates the fragility of Hawaiian island ecosystems.

🐌 Rare Hawaiian Land Snails

The wet forests around Puʻu Aliʻi also provide habitat for rare native land snails.

Several species of Partulina have been recorded from the Puʻu Aliʻi and neighboring Kamakou landscape.

Hawaiian land snails represent one of the islands’ most remarkable evolutionary radiations.

Hundreds of species once occupied different forests and elevations across the archipelago. Many evolved within extremely small geographic ranges.

Habitat destruction, invasive predators, rats, introduced snails, and other environmental changes have caused dramatic declines and extinctions.

Protecting intact forest around Puʻu Aliʻi therefore preserves not only visible trees and birds but also much smaller organisms that are essential components of Hawaiʻi’s biological heritage.

🐗 The Threat From Feral Ungulates

Introduced mammals have caused some of the most serious ecological damage in the Puʻu Aliʻi landscape.

Feral pigs, goats, and deer can disturb forest vegetation, uproot native plants, compact soil, create erosion, and help invasive plants spread.

Pigs are particularly destructive because they dig extensively while searching for food.

Their wallows and rooting activity can create pools of standing water that provide breeding habitat for mosquitoes. This is especially concerning in Hawaiʻi because mosquitoes transmit avian malaria to native forest birds.

Conservation managers have therefore used fences and animal removal programs to protect portions of the reserve.

A major conservation fencing project was designed to protect hundreds of acres of relatively intact native forest from continued ungulate damage.

🛡️ Puʻu Aliʻi Natural Area Reserve

The Puʻu Aliʻi Natural Area Reserve was established in 1985 to protect the region’s significant biological resources.

The reserve covers approximately 1,330 acres.

It forms part of Hawaiʻi’s statewide Natural Area Reserve System, which protects some of the state’s most intact examples of native ecosystems and important geological features.

Puʻu Aliʻi is particularly valuable because its forests remain connected to the adjacent Kamakou Preserve.

Rather than protecting isolated fragments, conservation efforts can therefore maintain a larger landscape spanning different elevations and habitats.

The reserve is divided into northern and southern management units, with fences used to reduce access by feral ungulates.

Its location inside the boundaries of Kalaupapa National Historical Park also brings the State of Hawaiʻi and National Park Service together in cooperative management of the area.

🌲 Neighboring Kamakou Preserve

Immediately south of Puʻu Aliʻi lies the Kamakou summit region and the Kamakou Preserve.

The Nature Conservancy manages approximately 2,774 acres there under a conservation easement.

Kamakou contains more than 250 native plant species and protects wet forest, bogs, shrublands, rare land snails, and native bird habitat.

One of its best-known environments is Pēpēʻōpae Bog, where deep organic deposits preserve a record of vegetation extending thousands of years into the past.

The protected lands surrounding Puʻu Aliʻi and Kamakou together form one of the most important remaining concentrations of native habitat on Molokaʻi.

🥾 Can You Hike to Puʻu Aliʻi?

Puʻu Aliʻi should not be approached like an ordinary Hawaiian hiking destination.

There are no roads into or through the Puʻu Aliʻi Natural Area Reserve.

Historic management documents describe a rough dirt-road approach to the neighboring Kamakou Preserve, with a foot trail connecting Kamakou to Puʻu Aliʻi. The interior of the reserve is extremely rugged, and management access has often been accomplished by helicopter.

Even access to Kamakou Preserve itself is challenging.

The Nature Conservancy warns that the preserve is extremely remote and reached by a rough, largely unmaintained dirt road requiring capable four-wheel-drive travel and experienced driving.

There are no visitor facilities, cell service is limited, and weather can change quickly.

Anyone considering travel into this area should obtain current access information directly from the managing agencies before setting out. Old trip reports should not be treated as evidence that a particular route remains open or appropriate.

⚠️ Hiking and Backcountry Safety

Travel in the Puʻu Aliʻi highlands presents hazards very different from the barren alpine environments of continental mountain ranges.

Trails can become extremely muddy and slippery. Dense vegetation can obscure routes, while heavy rain and fog can reduce visibility.

Steep valley walls and cliff edges are especially hazardous when wet.

Other considerations include:

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Deep mud
  • Slippery roots and rocks
  • Dense vegetation
  • Unmarked or faint trails
  • Remote terrain
  • Limited or nonexistent cell service
  • Fragile native ecosystems
  • Invasive-species biosecurity requirements

Visitors should carry adequate water, food, navigation equipment, rain protection, and emergency supplies even when conditions appear favorable.

🌺 Respecting Hawaiian Place Names and Landscapes

The Hawaiian name Puʻu Aliʻi contains two familiar geographic and cultural terms.

Puʻu can mean a hill, peak, or mound, while aliʻi refers to a chief, ruler, monarch, or member of the chiefly class.

The name can therefore be understood approximately as “chief’s hill,” “chiefly hill,” or “royal hill,” although Hawaiian place names can contain historical and cultural associations that are much richer than a simple word-for-word translation.

The ʻokina in Aliʻi is a consonant in the Hawaiian language, not decorative punctuation, and preserving it helps retain the correct form of the name.

The Puʻu Aliʻi landscape also has potential cultural significance beyond its name. High mountains, forests, native plants, valleys, watersheds, and other natural features have long been intertwined with Native Hawaiian traditions and relationships with the ʻāina.

🏔️ Nearby Mountains

The most important nearby summit is Kamakou, which rises south of Puʻu Aliʻi to approximately 4,961 feet.

Kamakou is the highest mountain on Molokaʻi and the true summit of the island’s eastern volcanic highlands.

Across the Pailolo Channel to the southeast, Puʻu Kukui rises to 5,788 feet in the West Maui Mountains.

Farther east, Haleakalā reaches 10,023 feet and dominates East Maui.

Other important Hawaiian high points include Kaʻala on Oʻahu and Kawaikini on Kauaʻi.

Together, these summits illustrate different stages in the life cycle of Hawaiian volcanic islands.

Young volcanoes can retain broad shield forms and active vents, while older volcanoes such as East Molokaʻi become progressively carved into deep valleys, cliffs, ridges, and isolated highlands.

🌄 Why Puʻu Aliʻi Is Special

Puʻu Aliʻi is unusual because its significance cannot be measured simply by elevation or prominence.

At roughly 4,200 feet, it is lower than Kamakou and does not form an independent summit in the conventional topographic sense.

Yet it remains an important geographic landmark as the high point of Kalawao County.

More importantly, the mountain stands within one of Hawaiʻi’s most remarkable ecological landscapes.

Wet ʻōhiʻa forest, rare plants, native birds, endangered land snails, bogs, springs, waterfalls, deeply carved valleys, and enormous sea cliffs are all connected across the upper East Molokaʻi watershed.

Puʻu Aliʻi also reveals the transformation of an ancient Hawaiian shield volcano. What was once part of a broad volcanic mountain has been sculpted by millions of years of rainfall, stream erosion, landslides, and marine erosion into one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Pacific.

For anyone exploring the mountains of Hawaiʻi, Puʻu Aliʻi offers an excellent reminder that a mountain’s importance can extend far beyond its summit.
