🏔️ Overview

Haleakalā is a massive shield volcano that dominates eastern Maui in the Hawaiian Islands. Rising to 10,023 feet (3,055 meters) at Puʻu ʻUlaʻula, also called Red Hill, it is the highest mountain on Maui and one of the most topographically prominent summits in the United States.

The Hawaiian name Haleakalā means “House of the Sun.” The mountain occupies an important place in Native Hawaiian history, spirituality, oral traditions, and navigation. In a well-known Hawaiian moʻolelo, or traditional story, the demigod Māui captured the sun and persuaded it to travel more slowly across the sky, lengthening the daylight hours.

Haleakalā is frequently described as dormant, but the U.S. Geological Survey classifies it as an active volcano in the postshield stage of development. Its most recent eruption probably occurred between approximately A.D. 1480 and 1600. Although the volcano is currently quiet, its geological history indicates that it will erupt again.

Much of the summit and eastern slope is protected within Haleakalā National Park. Visitors can drive almost to the highest point, watch the sun rise above the clouds, hike among colorful cinder cones, observe rare endemic plants, or descend into the enormous summit wilderness.

📍 Location

Haleakalā forms most of the eastern portion of Maui. Together with the deeply eroded West Maui volcano, commonly called Mauna Kahalawai or the West Maui Mountains, it created the modern island.

The volcano accounts for more than three-quarters of Maui’s land area. Its enormous slopes extend from the summit region to the Pacific Ocean, producing landscapes that range from dry alpine desert to native shrubland, wet forest, waterfalls, and subtropical coastline.

Haleakalā National Park is divided into two principal areas:

  • The Summit District, which protects the summit, volcanic wilderness, cinder cones, shrublands, and upper slopes.
  • The Kīpahulu District, which protects rainforest, streams, waterfalls, and coastal environments on the mountain’s southeastern flank.

The two districts are not connected by a road within the park. Reaching Kīpahulu generally requires traveling along the Hāna Highway and continuing beyond Hāna.

📏 Elevation & Prominence

Haleakalā reaches 10,023 feet above sea level at Puʻu ʻUlaʻula. Although several high points and cinder cones rise around the summit basin, Puʻu ʻUlaʻula is the volcano’s recognized highest summit.

The mountain’s prominence is also approximately 10,023 feet. Because Haleakalā is the highest point on the island of Maui, its prominence is measured down to sea level. This makes it an ultra-prominent summit, greatly exceeding the 4,921-foot threshold used to define an ultra.

Its topographic isolation is approximately 75.43 miles. The nearest terrain that rises above Haleakalā is located on Mauna Kea on Hawaiʻi Island, across the ʻAlenuihāhā Channel.

Haleakalā’s broad profile can make it appear less steep than many rugged continental mountains. However, its extraordinary prominence reflects the immense vertical distance between the Pacific Ocean and the summit.

🪨 Geology

Haleakalā is an enormous shield volcano created by repeated eruptions above the Hawaiian hotspot. East Maui volcano began growing about two million years ago, although most of its earliest volcanic history is buried beneath thousands of feet of younger lava.

During its shield-building stage, fluid basaltic lava spread over wide areas, gradually constructing a broad volcanic mountain. Haleakalā later entered the postshield stage, during which eruptions became less frequent and produced lava with somewhat different chemical compositions.

The volcano contains several major groups of volcanic rock:

  • Honomanu Basalt, representing older exposed shield-stage lava
  • Kula Volcanics, formed during much of the postshield stage
  • Hāna Volcanics, which include the youngest lava flows and cinder cones

One of the greatest misconceptions about Haleakalā concerns its famous “crater.” The summit depression is not primarily a collapsed volcanic caldera. It is an enormous erosional valley.

Two valleys—Koʻolau on the northern side and Kaupō on the southern side—gradually eroded into the summit. As their headwalls expanded, they joined to create the basin now called Haleakalā Crater. Later eruptions constructed cinder cones and spread lava across the valley floor.

The youngest known lava flow, Kalua o Lapa, erupted along the lower southwest rift zone several centuries ago. Young volcanic deposits also extend toward the coast near Keoneʻōʻio, commonly known as La Pérouse Bay.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that East Maui volcano has a volume of approximately 30,000 cubic kilometers, with about 97 percent of that volume lying below sea level.

🌿 Flora & Fauna

Haleakalā supports an extraordinary range of ecosystems because its slopes rise from sea level to more than 10,000 feet. Elevation, rainfall, trade winds, temperature, and exposure create sharply contrasting habitats across relatively short distances.

The mountain’s best-known plant is the Haleakalā silversword, or ʻāhinahina. This remarkable plant survives in the dry alpine environment above approximately 7,000 feet. Its dense covering of silver-colored hairs helps reflect sunlight, conserve moisture, and protect the leaves from temperature extremes.

Silverswords may live for several decades before producing a tall flower stalk. After flowering and setting seed, the plant dies. Visitors should never touch or step near silverswords because their shallow root systems and delicate leaves are easily damaged.

  • Māmane
  • ʻŌhelo

The mountain is also home to several notable native birds. The nēnē, or Hawaiian goose, can sometimes be seen near roads, trails, parking areas, and shrublands. Drivers should remain alert because these birds may walk onto the roadway.

The endangered ʻuaʻu, or Hawaiian petrel, nests in burrows on the upper slopes. These seabirds spend much of their lives over the ocean but return to Haleakalā to breed.

Native forest habitats lower on the mountain support several Hawaiian honeycreepers and other endemic birds. Insects, spiders, land snails, and the Hawaiian hoary bat also contribute to Haleakalā’s unusual biological diversity.

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes

Reaching the highest point of Haleakalā does not require technical climbing. A paved highway enters the national park and continues to the summit area. However, the mountain also contains demanding wilderness routes that descend thousands of feet into the summit basin.

Puʻu ʻUlaʻula Summit

A short paved path leads from the upper parking area to the summit building at Puʻu ʻUlaʻula. The walk is brief, but the elevation can make even gentle activity feel more strenuous.

From the summit, visitors can look across the volcanic basin, neighboring cinder cones, Maui’s lower slopes, and—under clear conditions—toward mountains on Hawaiʻi Island.

Keoneheʻeheʻe Trail

The Keoneheʻeheʻe Trail, better known as the Sliding Sands Trail, begins near the Haleakalā Visitor Center at approximately 9,740 feet.

The trail descends steeply through loose volcanic cinder into the summit wilderness. Hikers pass multicolored slopes, lava formations, barren-looking plains, and cinder cones.

The descent may feel relatively easy, but the return climb is strenuous. Hikers must regain thousands of feet at high elevation, often while facing strong sun, wind, cold, or rapidly changing clouds.

Halemauʻu Trail

The Halemauʻu Trail begins at approximately 8,000 feet. It crosses native shrubland before descending a dramatic series of switchbacks into the summit basin.

The trail provides access to Hōlua, volcanic wilderness routes, and the crater floor. It is frequently combined with Keoneheʻeheʻe to create a point-to-point traverse of roughly 11 miles, depending on the route selected.

Transportation must be planned carefully because the two trailheads are several miles apart.

Pa Kaʻoao Trail

Pa Kaʻoao is a short summit-area trail near the Haleakalā Visitor Center. It climbs to an overlook with expansive views into the summit basin.

Although the trail is short, the rocky terrain and high elevation can make it more tiring than expected.

Wilderness Backpacking

Longer routes connect Hōlua, Kapalaoa, Palikū, Kaupō Gap, and other locations within the wilderness. Designated campsites and wilderness cabins allow overnight trips, but advance reservations are required.

Backpackers should carry sufficient water, navigation equipment, sun protection, warm clothing, rain protection, food, and emergency supplies. Water sources may be limited, unavailable, or require treatment.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip: A hike that begins with a long descent into Haleakalā will finish with a difficult climb. Turn around before you have used half your energy, and remember that hiking at 8,000 to 10,000 feet is more demanding than covering the same distance near sea level.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

Haleakalā can be visited throughout the year, but no season guarantees clear or comfortable conditions.

Summit temperatures may fall below freezing, while daytime highs commonly remain between approximately 50°F and 65°F. Strong wind, intense sunlight, fog, rain, and even occasional snow are possible.

Sunrise

Sunrise is Haleakalā’s most famous experience. Visitors entering the Summit District between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. must have an advance vehicle reservation in addition to paying the park entrance fee or presenting an accepted pass.

Reservations are limited and may sell out quickly. Cloud cover can obscure the sunrise, and reservation fees are generally not refunded because of poor weather.

Daytime

Daytime visits are often better for hiking, photography, geology, and observing plants. Visitors can also appreciate the ecological changes along the road that are invisible during a pre-dawn drive.

Sunset and Stargazing

Sunset does not currently require the special sunrise reservation, although normal park entry requirements still apply. Parking can become crowded, and the drive down takes place in darkness.

The high elevation, dark skies, and position above many lower clouds also make Haleakalā an outstanding stargazing destination.

Regardless of season, visitors should check current weather, closures, volcanic notices, and park alerts before beginning the drive.

Puʻu Kukui

Puʻu Kukui is the highest point in the West Maui Mountains. Its wet, deeply eroded landscape contrasts dramatically with Haleakalā’s young volcanic terrain and broad upper slopes.

Hanakauhi

Hanakauhi is a major high point on the northern rim of the Haleakalā summit basin. Young lava flows from fissures beneath the peak extend into the wilderness below.

Kalahaku Overlook

Kalahaku Overlook provides broad views into the summit depression and across its volcanic cones. The area also offers opportunities to see silverswords and native birds.

Kīpahulu District

The coastal Kīpahulu District protects rainforest, freshwater streams, waterfalls, archaeological resources, and the lower southeastern slopes of Haleakalā.

Pīpīwai Trail

The Pīpīwai Trail travels through lush vegetation and a famous bamboo forest before reaching Waimoku Falls. Conditions can be wet and slippery, especially after rain.

ʻOheʻo Gulch

ʻOheʻo Gulch contains a series of stream pools and waterfalls near the Kīpahulu coast. Flash flooding, rockfalls, high water, and other hazards can result in closures, so visitors should follow all posted restrictions.

Keoneʻōʻio and La Pérouse Bay

The southwestern coast contains some of Haleakalā’s youngest lava flows. The barren volcanic shoreline provides a striking view of how recent eruptions reshaped the edge of Maui.
