Himalchuli, also written Himal Chuli, is one of the great high mountains of Nepal. Rising to 7,893 meters (25,896 feet), it is the second-highest mountain in the Mansiri Himal, surpassed only by neighboring Manaslu. By the commonly used rankings of independent mountains, Himalchuli is the 18th-highest mountain in the world.
Despite its extraordinary elevation, Himalchuli is far less famous than many Himalayan peaks of comparable size. Its position beside 8,163-meter Manaslu partly explains this relative obscurity, but the mountain is impressive in its own right. Himalchuli is a sprawling, heavily glaciated massif rather than a simple isolated pyramid, with several high summits, enormous ridges, steep ice-covered faces, and dramatic relief above the river valleys below.

📍 Location
Himalchuli rises in north-central Nepal within the Mansiri Himal, a subrange of the greater Himalayas sometimes called the Manaslu Himal. It stands south-southeast of Manaslu and forms part of a spectacular line of giant peaks that also includes Ngadi Chuli.
Administratively, Nepal’s official Himalayan peak database places Himal Chuli East in both the Lamjung and Gorkha districts of Gandaki Province, associated with the Dordi and Chum Nubri rural municipalities.
The mountain occupies a particularly dramatic part of the central Himalayas. 🪨 Geology
Himalchuli owes its existence to the same immense tectonic forces responsible for the entire Himalayan chain.
The Himalayas began forming tens of millions of years ago as the Indian continental plate collided with the Eurasian plate. Because continental crust is relatively buoyant, much of the crust at the collision zone was compressed, folded, faulted, thickened, and forced upward rather than simply disappearing into the mantle.
That process created the Himalayan mountain belt and continues today. The Indian plate is still moving northward relative to Eurasia, and the region remains tectonically active.
At Himalchuli, uplift has been accompanied by equally powerful erosion. Glaciers, freeze-thaw cycles, avalanches, landslides, and rivers constantly reshape the mountain. Deep valleys cut into the surrounding landscape while glaciers occupy many of the highest basins and slopes.
The result is the extraordinary relief characteristic of the Mansiri Himal: some of the highest summits on Earth rising directly above deeply incised Himalayan valleys.

🌿 Flora & Fauna
Very little vegetation survives on Himalchuli’s highest slopes, where permanent snow, exposed rock, glaciers, extreme cold, and low atmospheric oxygen dominate the landscape. Farther downslope, however, the environment changes dramatically.
The broader Manaslu region contains an exceptional range of habitats. Forests occur at lower elevations, followed by temperate and subalpine vegetation, alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and finally the sparse high-altitude environments of the upper Himalayas.
The Manaslu Conservation Area supports wildlife adapted to these steep and challenging landscapes. Species recorded in the region include snow leopards, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, Himalayan serow, red foxes, Himalayan marmots, and lynx.
Birdlife is equally notable. High-mountain species found within the conservation area include snow partridge, Tibetan snowcock, Himalayan griffon, golden eagle, and chukar.
The tremendous elevation range around Himalchuli helps explain this biodiversity. A journey from the lower river valleys toward the mountain passes through ecological zones that can differ dramatically in temperature, precipitation, vegetation, and wildlife.

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes
Himalchuli is not a conventional hiking or trekking summit. Reaching its top requires a full-scale high-altitude mountaineering expedition involving glacier travel, steep snow and ice, technical climbing, acclimatization, expedition logistics, and prolonged exposure to extreme altitude.
Nepal’s official Himalayan peak profile lists Himal Chuli East as an open climbing peak. Expedition approaches can be made from both the Gorkha side and the Besisahar/Lamjung side of the mountain.
The Historic Southwest Route
The mountain’s most important route historically is the southwest approach used during the first ascent.
After several exploratory expeditions and unsuccessful attempts during the 1950s, a Japanese expedition reached the mountain in 1960. Climbers established a succession of high camps and eventually reached the saddle between the West Peak and the main summit.
On May 24, 1960, Hisashi Tanabe and Masahiro Harada left their highest camp and climbed toward the summit. Their route included steep snow and ice as well as a rock section beneath the top.
After hours of climbing, the pair reached Himalchuli’s summit, completing the mountain’s first confirmed ascent.
The team used supplemental oxygen high on the mountain, something that was comparatively unusual at the time for a summit below 8,000 meters.
Later Expeditions
Himalchuli did not become a frequently climbed mountain after its first ascent. Subsequent expeditions explored routes on several sides of the massif, including the south, southwest, and north.
A Japanese expedition made the first ascent of Himalchuli West in 1978. The North Peak was first climbed by a Korean expedition in 1985.
Other teams have attempted difficult routes on the mountain’s northern and northeastern sides, where steep ice, cornices, avalanche exposure, and complicated terrain have repeatedly turned back expeditions.
Even among Nepal’s 7,000-meter mountains, Himalchuli remains a serious undertaking suitable only for highly experienced expedition climbers.
🧗 The First Ascent of Himalchuli
Himalchuli attracted mountaineering interest well before its successful ascent. Explorers investigated possible approaches during the early 1950s, followed by increasingly serious climbing attempts later in the decade.
Japanese mountaineers became particularly involved in exploring the Mansiri Himal following Japan’s successful first ascent of nearby Manaslu in 1956.
A Japanese expedition investigated Himalchuli in 1959 but was unable to reach the summit. Knowledge gained during these early expeditions contributed to the successful 1960 attempt.
The 1960 expedition was organized by climbers associated with Keio University. A series of camps was established progressively higher on the mountain during May.
By May 23, the team had established its sixth camp on the broad snowy saddle between Himalchuli’s West Peak and main summit. Tanabe and Harada began their summit attempt the following morning.
They eventually reached the summit at approximately 1:10 p.m. on May 24. Their climb marked the first confirmed ascent of one of the world’s 20 highest independent mountains.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
For most travelers, “visiting Himalchuli” means seeing the mountain from surrounding valleys and trekking areas rather than attempting the summit.
The clearest mountain views in central Nepal are generally associated with the post-monsoon autumn season, particularly October and November. Skies are often clearer during this period, and the landscape can offer excellent long-distance views of the high Himalayas.
Spring, especially March through May, is another popular period for trekking and mountaineering in Nepal. Temperatures gradually become milder at lower elevations, while rhododendrons and other Himalayan plants can add color to forested slopes.
The summer monsoon brings heavy rainfall to many southern Himalayan valleys and can create clouds, poor visibility, landslides, and difficult travel conditions.
Winter often provides clear skies but brings severe cold, heavy snow at elevation, and much more challenging conditions in remote mountain areas.
Major climbing expeditions generally favor the pre-monsoon spring season or post-monsoon autumn season, although conditions on a mountain as high as Himalchuli can remain unpredictable at any time of year.
