🪨 Geology

One of the most important events occurred approximately 30 million years ago, when enormous quantities of basaltic lava erupted across what is now Ethiopia. Successive lava flows accumulated into a huge volcanic plateau—the Ethiopian flood basalts. Geological studies date this major phase of continental flood-basalt volcanism to roughly 30 million years ago.
Later tectonic stretching began pulling the crust apart. The developing Main Ethiopian Rift fractured and separated sections of the plateau, while continuing volcanic activity created additional cones, calderas, lava fields, and volcanic mountains.
Erosion then transformed the high plateau. Rivers sliced deeply through stacked basalt layers, producing steep escarpments, isolated mesas, narrow ridges, and enormous gorges.
The Simien Mountains provide one of the finest examples. UNESCO describes a landscape sculpted by millions of years of erosion into jagged summits, deep valleys, and cliffs reaching roughly 1,500 meters in relief.
