Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest mountain in Africa, surpassed only by Mount Kilimanjaro in neighboring Tanzania. Its highest summit, Batian, rises to 5,199 meters (17,057 feet), while the nearby peaks of Nelion and Point Lenana create one of the most dramatic high-altitude skylines on the continent.
Unlike the broad volcanic dome of Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya has been deeply sculpted by millions of years of erosion and repeated glaciation. What remains is a spectacular core of jagged rock towers, steep ridges, glacial valleys, alpine lakes, moorlands, forests, and small retreating glaciers.

Batian and Nelion form the dramatic twin summit towers near the center of the massif. They are separated by the high notch known as the Gate of the Mists.

🪨 Geology
Mount Kenya is the heavily eroded remnant of an enormous extinct volcano.
UNESCO dates the mountain’s principal volcanic activity to roughly 3.1 to 2.6 million years ago. During its active period, the volcano may have risen to approximately 6,500 meters, considerably higher than the mountain seen today.
Volcanic eruptions gradually constructed an immense stratovolcano from repeated layers of lava and other volcanic material.
After volcanic activity ended, erosion began dismantling the cone.
Glaciers Reshaped the Volcano
The jagged modern appearance of Mount Kenya owes much to glaciation.

Sirimon Route
The Sirimon Route approaches Mount Kenya from the northwest and is one of the most popular trekking approaches.
It provides relatively gradual altitude gain and passes through forest, moorland, and broad high-altitude valleys before approaching the central peaks.
Because of its generally steady profile, Sirimon is frequently incorporated into itineraries designed to allow better acclimatization.
Chogoria Route
The Chogoria Route approaches from the eastern side of Mount Kenya.
Many trekkers consider it the most scenic approach because the landscape includes dramatic valleys, cliffs, tarns, gorges, waterfalls, and exceptional views of the central peaks.
A particularly rewarding itinerary combines Sirimon and Chogoria, allowing hikers to experience two very different sides of the mountain rather than retracing the same route.
Naro Moru Route
The Naro Moru Route approaches from the west.
Historically it has been one of the fastest and most direct trekking routes toward Point Lenana.

Batian

Nelion

Experienced climbers may continue between Nelion and Batian through the complicated terrain surrounding the Gate of the Mists, but the traverse dramatically increases the seriousness of the climb.

Rain is typically more persistent during the principal wet seasons.
However, Mount Kenya creates its own mountain weather. Snow, sleet, rain, fog, intense sun, freezing nights, and strong wind can occur even during otherwise favorable periods.
Technical climbers must pay particular attention to seasonal differences because some rock routes are significantly better suited to particular times of year.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
