🏔️ Overview
Geyik Dağları, or the Geyik Mountains, are a rugged limestone mountain range in southern Turkey, rising along the northeastern side of Antalya Province near the boundary with Konya. They form part of the Taurus Mountains and occupy an important transition zone between the Western and Central Taurus.
Although the name Geyik Dağları refers to the broader mountain chain, the range’s highest summit is Geyik Dağı, also known locally as Giği Dağı. The summit reaches 2,877 meters (9,439 feet) and has an impressive 1,543 meters (5,062 feet) of topographic prominence, making it an ultra-prominent peak.
The mountains are notable not only for their elevation but also for their remarkable glacial history. Modern geomorphological research has identified 98 glacial cirques in the Geyik Mountains and reconstructed an extensive system of former glaciers that covered more than 130 square kilometers during the last major glaciation.

📍 Location
Geyik Dağları rise in southern Turkey, approximately 40 kilometers north of the Mediterranean Sea. The range extends for roughly 40 kilometers in a generally northwest-to-southeast direction.

These measurements help explain why Geyik Dağı is such a dominant feature of the surrounding Taurus landscape despite not being among Turkey’s very highest peaks.
🪨 Geology
Geyik Dağları are largely composed of carbonate rocks, particularly limestone, characteristic of much of the Taurus mountain system.
Limestone dissolves gradually when exposed to slightly acidic rainwater and groundwater. Over long periods, this process produces karst landscapes characterized by enclosed depressions, sinkholes, caves, underground drainage systems and deeply eroded rocky terrain.
In the Geyik Mountains, karst processes have interacted with former glacial erosion to create an especially interesting glacio-karst landscape.
High valleys and basins were shaped first by the underlying geology and later heavily modified by ice. Today, the landscape includes:

🧊 An Extraordinary Glacial Landscape
One of the most important features of Geyik Dağları is its evidence of former glaciation.
A major 2024 study published in Geomorphology described the Geyik Mountains as the largest area of former glaciation in the Western Taurus.
Researchers identified 98 glacial cirques and reconstructed glaciers covering approximately 132.5 square kilometers during the last major glaciation.
Individual glaciers ranged from approximately 1.4 to 12 kilometers long.
The largest concentration occurred in the Namaras Valley, where glaciers flowing from numerous cirques joined together. Researchers reconstructed a broad piedmont glacier covering approximately 75 square kilometers and reaching an estimated maximum thickness of around 400 meters.
Much of this ice has long since vanished, but its former presence remains visible in the cirques, moraines and valleys carved into the mountains.
The orientation of these glacial landforms is also significant. Many cirques face north or northeast, where lower exposure to direct solar radiation helped snow and ice survive for longer periods.
❄️ Are There Still Glaciers on Geyik Dağı?
Surprisingly, research published in 2023 confirmed that small modern glaciers survived on Geyik Dağı.
Scientists investigated the mountain after reports of surviving ice and subsequently confirmed two small glaciers through remote sensing and fieldwork.
At the time of the study:
- Geyik Central Glacier covered approximately 6,000 square meters.
- Geyik East Glacier covered approximately 2,030 square meters.
- Their combined area was approximately 0.00803 square kilometers.
- Their average length was about 95 meters.
- Their calculated equilibrium-line altitude was approximately 2,619 meters.
- Both glaciers occupied sheltered north-facing terrain.
The researchers estimated that the glaciers had lost more than half of their area since September 2010.
They also projected that the remaining ice could disappear within several years if the observed warming and retreat continued. Because that prediction was made from observations published in 2023, the precise present-day extent of the ice requires continued field measurements rather than assumption.
These tiny glaciers are important because they represent rare surviving remnants of a much larger ice system that once covered substantial parts of the Geyik Mountains.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
Geyik Dağları occupy a biological transition zone between the Mediterranean coast and the colder, drier Anatolian interior.
Vegetation changes considerably with elevation and exposure.
Forest communities within the broader Taurus region contain characteristic species such as:

At higher elevations, forests gradually become more open before giving way to mountain grasslands, rocky slopes and alpine vegetation.
The region around Eğrigöl, on the Taşeli Plateau below the Geyik Mountains, is particularly noted for its natural vegetation and endemic plants.
Differences in elevation, moisture, slope orientation and geology create numerous specialized habitats. Rocky limestone areas, snowbeds, high pastures and forest margins can each support different plant communities.
The mountains have also traditionally supported livestock grazing, while the rich flowering vegetation contributes to local beekeeping.
Visitors should avoid picking alpine flowers or disturbing wildlife. Mountain plants can have extremely short growing seasons and may take many years to recover from damage.
🏞️ Eğrigöl and the High Plateaus
One of the most attractive natural features near Geyik Dağları is Eğrigöl, a high-altitude lake situated on the Taşeli Plateau near the foothills of the mountains.
The lake lies close to the Antalya–Konya boundary and is surrounded by open mountain scenery, seasonal snowfields, grasslands and high plateaus.
Eğrigöl and the surrounding uplands are used by pastoral communities and have become destinations for campers, photographers and hikers.
Traditional yaylas, or high summer pastures, are an important part of the cultural landscape throughout the Taurus Mountains. For generations, people have moved livestock into these cooler mountain pastures during the warmer part of the year.
This pastoral tradition remains visible around parts of Geyik Dağları today.
🥾 Hiking & Climbing Geyik Dağları
Geyik Dağları offer excellent terrain for experienced hikers, backpackers and mountaineers, but the region should not be approached like a heavily developed hiking destination.
Many parts of the massif are remote, and routes may cross open pasture, limestone rubble, exposed ridges and terrain without consistently marked trails.
A summit trip to Geyik Dağı can involve:
- Long approaches on mountain roads

- Steep slopes

For ordinary hiking and mountain exploration, summer through early autumn generally provides the most practical conditions.

Wildflowers and green pastures can make June particularly scenic, but lingering snow may remain on high slopes and shaded cirques.
July and August
These are normally the most accessible months for higher-elevation trekking. Conditions are generally warmer and much of the seasonal snow has disappeared.
However, the Mediterranean lowlands can be extremely hot during this period, while high mountain conditions remain considerably cooler.
September
September can provide pleasant conditions with fewer summer visitors and cooler daytime temperatures. Nights at elevation can become cold.
Autumn and Winter
Snow, ice and severe mountain weather can transform the high country. Winter travel requires appropriate equipment, route-finding ability and experience with mountain snow conditions.
Snow may linger much later on sheltered north-facing slopes than visitors expect from the mountains’ proximity to Turkey’s warm Mediterranean coast.
