Le Taillefer is located in the Isère department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, southeast of Grenoble in southeastern France.

The Taillefer Massif is predominantly a crystalline mountain massif, geologically related to neighboring Belledonne.
The summit of Le Taillefer itself is formed in part from metamorphic rocks including gneiss and amphibolite-bearing formations. Other parts of the massif contain micaschist, schist, gabbro, ophiolitic rocks, and sedimentary formations.
One of the mountain’s most obvious characteristics is the reddish-brown coloration of much of its upper rock.
Iron-bearing minerals weather at the surface and produce the rusty colors that are so visible around the summit. This appearance is closely associated with the mountain’s name: Taillefer evokes iron, and local tradition has long connected the peak with its iron-colored rock.

Snow can remain on north-facing slopes and high passes well into the warmer months. At nearly 2,900 meters, weather near the summit can also deteriorate much more quickly than conditions in the valleys below.

Winter transforms the massif into a very different environment. Ski touring and other winter activities take place in the region, but avalanche conditions, deep snow, ice, and severe weather substantially increase the hazards.
