Mule deer are among the most recognizable large mammals of western North America. Named for their remarkably large, mule-like ears, these adaptable deer inhabit environments ranging from scorching deserts and sagebrush plains to wooded foothills and high mountain basins.

Unlike the white-tailed deer found across much of eastern North America, mule deer are closely associated with the open landscapes, rugged terrain and seasonal climate of the West. Many populations make impressive migrations between summer and winter ranges, following the growth of nutritious vegetation as snow conditions change.

Mule deer are also known for their distinctive bounding gait. When alarmed, they may leap into the air with all four feet leaving the ground at once—a movement called stotting or pronking. Combined with their branching antlers, black-tipped tails and oversized ears, this behavior makes mule deer relatively easy to identify in the field.

👀 Appearance and Identification

Mule deer vary considerably in size and coloration across their range. Animals living in northern forests and productive mountain habitats are generally larger than those living in dry deserts.

Their summer coat is usually reddish-brown or tan. During autumn, this is replaced by a thicker gray or gray-brown winter coat that provides better insulation and camouflage.

Large Ears

The mule deer’s most obvious feature is its oversized ears. These ears may reach approximately three-quarters the length of the animal’s head.

The ears help mule deer detect approaching predators and may also assist with temperature regulation in hot, exposed environments.

Tail and Rump

Most mule deer have a white or pale rump patch and a short, narrow tail with a black tip. When the deer runs, the dark tip often remains visible against the lighter rump.

This differs from the broad, bright-white tail of a white-tailed deer, which is typically raised like a flag when the animal is alarmed.

Antlers

Hybridization can occur where mule deer and white-tailed deer overlap, but it is relatively uncommon.

Some mule deer make among the most impressive seasonal migrations of any North American land mammal. Deer may travel from high summer ranges to wintering grounds located many miles away.

These migrations are not random. Herds often follow traditional corridors that have been passed between generations.

A typical spring migration follows the appearance of fresh vegetation as plants begin growing at progressively higher elevations. Researchers sometimes describe this behavior as “surfing the green wave.”

By moving with the advancing spring, deer gain prolonged access to tender, nutritious plants.

Autumn migration is influenced by snowfall, temperature, food availability and inherited behavior. Some animals leave high country before major storms, while others remain until snow depth makes feeding or movement difficult.

Fawn Survival

Severe Winters
