    Rising almost 5,000 vertical feet above Yosemite Valley, Half Dome is one of the most recognizable mountains in the Sierra Nevada and one of the defining natural landmarks of the American West. Its smooth rounded summit, enormous sheer northwest face, and exposed granite shoulders form a silhouette so distinctive that it has become virtually synonymous with Yosemite National Park.

    Modern LiDAR places the summit at 8,845.7 feet (2,696.2 meters). Half Dome has approximately 1,369 feet (417 meters) of topographic prominence and 2.05 miles (3.30 kilometers) of isolation. Its nearest higher neighbor and line parent are both Clouds Rest, which rises northeast of the dome.

    Half Dome’s geology is even more impressive than its appearance. The mountain consists primarily of Half Dome Granodiorite, a Late Cretaceous intrusive rock that crystallized underground approximately 92–88 million years ago. Uplift and erosion later exposed this solidified magma, while unloading created curved exfoliation sheets and Ice Age glaciers deepened Yosemite Valley and steepened the dome’s dramatic sides.

    Despite the name, Half Dome was not simply a complete round dome that suddenly lost half of itself. More than half of the original rock mass remains. The famous northwest wall developed gradually along vertical joints, with glacial erosion, weathering, exfoliation, and repeated rockfalls contributing to the profile visible today.

    Human history is equally layered. First Peoples have lived in the Yosemite region for thousands of years, and 19th-century records preserve Tis-sa-ack as one historical Indigenous name associated with Half Dome. George Anderson completed the first documented non-Indigenous ascent on October 12, 1875, drilling iron bolts into the steep eastern slabs. Modern hikers now follow a related line using steel cables installed in 1919, while technical climbers have established some of the most influential big-wall routes in American climbing history on the enormous northwest face.

    Half Dome rises at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California.

    This updates the older Mountain Field Guide figure while confirming that the original article was already very close.

    Half Dome rises dramatically above Yosemite Valley, whose floor is roughly 4,000 feet above sea level.

    Depending on the exact point used for comparison, the mountain rises nearly 5,000 vertical feet above the valley floor.

    That local relief is a major reason Half Dome appears so enormous despite being substantially lower than the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

    Half Dome has approximately:

    🧭 Nearest Higher Neighbor

    Half Dome’s nearest higher neighbor is Clouds Rest.

    Clouds Rest lies approximately two miles northeast and reaches more than 9,900 feet.

    Peakbagger calculates Half Dome’s true isolation at:

    2.05 miles / 3.30 kilometers

    Clouds Rest is also Half Dome’s line parent.

    The relationship becomes obvious from high viewpoints: Half Dome forms the dramatic western end of a much larger landscape rising toward Clouds Rest and Yosemite’s high country.

    Half Dome may be Yosemite’s most recognizable summit, but it is far from the highest.

    Several Yosemite peaks exceed 12,000 feet.

    Half Dome’s fame comes primarily from:

    Half Dome is made primarily from granodiorite.

    The rock is formally known as:

    Half Dome Granodiorite

    This corrects older descriptions that call the mountain simply granite or specifically β€œHalf Dome Quartz Monzonite.”

    Earlier geological literature did use the name Half Dome Quartz Monzonite, but USGS geologists later renamed the unit after determining that its composition is predominantly granodiorite.

    Half Dome itself is the type locality for the formation.

    Granodiorite is an intrusive igneous rock related to granite.

    It forms when magma cools slowly deep underground.

    Because cooling occurs gradually, mineral crystals have time to grow large enough to be visible.

    Half Dome Granodiorite commonly contains:

    Dark biotite and hornblende crystals create speckling within the otherwise light-colored rock.

    Modern uranium-lead dating places emplacement of the Half Dome Granodiorite at approximately:

    92–88 million years ago

    This was during the Late Cretaceous Period.

    At that time, magma was cooling several miles beneath Earth’s surface.

    Half Dome did not exist as a mountain.

    The granodiorite was part of a large underground intrusive system beneath an active continental margin.

    Tens of millions of years of uplift and erosion were required before these rocks became exposed.

    πŸŒ‹ Was Half Dome Once a Volcano?

    No.

    Half Dome itself is not an extinct volcano.

    The granodiorite formed from magma, but that magma crystallized underground rather than erupting at the surface.

    The solidified underground magma chamber is called a pluton.

    During the Cretaceous, volcanoes probably stood above portions of the Sierra Nevada intrusive system.

    Those volcanoes and much of the surrounding rock were eventually removed by erosion.

    What visitors now see at Half Dome is rock that once crystallized far beneath them.

    Half Dome belongs to the immense geological system known as the Sierra Nevada Batholith.

    A batholith is a gigantic body composed of many intrusive plutons.

    These plutons formed during prolonged subduction along western North America during the Mesozoic Era.

    As an oceanic tectonic plate descended beneath North America, water and other materials promoted melting within the mantle and lower crust.

    Magma rose upward.

    Some erupted as volcanoes.

    Much of it stalled underground and cooled into granitic rock.

    The modern Sierra Nevada exposes the deeply eroded roots of that ancient volcanic arc.

    Half Dome Granodiorite belongs to the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite.

    This is one of the major nested intrusive complexes within the Sierra Nevada Batholith.

    Different magmas entered the crust at different times.

    As each cooled, it created a distinct plutonic unit.

    Half Dome Granodiorite represents one major stage in that process.

    The rock visible at Half Dome therefore forms part of an enormous underground magmatic system that was assembled over millions of years.

    Formation of the granodiorite did not automatically create today’s Sierra Nevada.

    After the rock crystallized, kilometers of material still covered it.

    Long-term erosion gradually removed the overlying volcanic and metamorphic rocks.

    Later tectonic uplift raised the Sierra Nevada.

    Approximately 10 million years ago, renewed uplift and westward tilting increased erosion.

    Rivers cut more deeply.

    Granitic plutons became increasingly exposed.

    Half Dome’s rounded upper surface is strongly associated with exfoliation.

    Granodiorite originally crystallized under tremendous pressure underground.

    Once erosion removed the overlying rock, that pressure decreased.

    The exposed rock expanded slightly.

    Outer sheets gradually separated and peeled away.

    This process creates the curved slabs visible on many Yosemite domes.

    It is sometimes compared with layers peeling from an onion.

    The fractures produced by this process are known as exfoliation joints.

    Some are only millimeters apart.

    Others separate enormous slabs several feet thick.

    Over time, rockfalls remove these sheets.

    The process continues today.

    ❓ What Happened to the Other Half of Half Dome?

    Half Dome looks as though someone cut a round granite mountain directly in half.

    That interpretation is visually irresistible β€” and geologically misleading.

    More than half of the original dome remains.

    There probably was not one catastrophic moment when an entire half of the mountain suddenly fell away.

    Instead, several processes gradually created the shape:

    • Vertical jointing
    • Exfoliation
    • Weathering
    • Glacial erosion
    • Rockfall
    • Erosion of surrounding rock

    The northwest face formed along an exceptionally important vertical fracture system.

    Glaciers and rockfalls then steepened it.

    Granitic rock contains natural fractures called joints.

    Unlike faults, joints do not necessarily involve major movement of one side past another.

    They simply represent breaks in the rock.

    At Half Dome, a strong set of near-vertical joints influenced the development of the northwest face.

    Glaciers exploited them.

    Large pieces could detach along them.

    Ice occupied Yosemite Valley to great depths.

    Glaciers followed preexisting river valleys but:

    • Straightened them

    The result was the famous U-shaped Yosemite Valley.

    Half Dome stood along the edge of this glacial system.

    Human history in Yosemite extends far beyond the first documented non-Indigenous ascent of Half Dome.

    Archaeological evidence indicates that people have lived in the Yosemite region for thousands of years.

    Yosemite National Park encourages the broad term First People of Yosemite when discussing the Indigenous peoples with ancestral relationships to the area.

    Historically, the people living in Yosemite Valley when non-Indigenous newcomers entered the region called the valley Ahwahnee and themselves Ahwahneechee.

    Southern Sierra Miwok, Paiute, Mono, and other communities maintain cultural connections with Yosemite today.

    πŸͺΆ Tis-sa-ack

    Nineteenth-century Yosemite records preserve Tis-sa-ack as an Indigenous name associated with Half Dome.

    Historical spellings vary.

    As with many Indigenous place names recorded by early English-speaking writers, translations and spellings should be treated cautiously because they passed through people who did not necessarily speak the language fluently.

    The name also became associated with stories explaining the mountain’s form.

    It survives today in Yosemite climbing culture through the famous Tis-sa-ack route on Half Dome’s northwest face.

    🏷️ South Dome and Half Dome

    Early English-language maps often called the mountain South Dome because North Dome and other rounded granite features stood across the valley landscape.

    The name Half Dome eventually became dominant because of the mountain’s unmistakable profile.

    By the late 19th century, the name was firmly associated with Yosemite’s most recognizable granite landmark.

    πŸ§— β€œPerfectly Inaccessible”

    During the 19th century, Half Dome was considered impossible to climb.

    California State Geologist Josiah Whitney famously described it as effectively inaccessible and predicted that humans would never stand on the summit.

    That prediction did not last long.

    Scottish immigrant George Anderson, a Yosemite blacksmith, carpenter, trail worker, and guide, became obsessed with reaching the summit.

    His solution was extraordinary.

    Anderson approached Half Dome from the east rather than attempting the vertical northwest face.

    Even there, the final slabs were too steep and smooth to ascend safely without assistance.

    Anderson used:

    He drilled directly into the granite.

    Standing on one bolt, he drilled the next hole above.

    He then moved upward and repeated the process.

    It was extraordinarily slow and exposed work.

    George Anderson reached the summit on:

    October 12, 1875

    It was the first documented non-Indigenous ascent of Half Dome.

    The climb immediately disproved one of Yosemite’s most famous predictions.

    Anderson subsequently installed ropes using his drilled anchors so that visitors could follow his route.

    He began guiding other people onto the summit.

    Only weeks after Anderson’s ascent, Sally Dutcher became the first documented woman to climb Half Dome.

    She reached the summit in October 1875, accompanied by George Anderson and Galen Clark.

    Her ascent is remarkable given both the primitive equipment and the restrictive expectations commonly placed on women in the 19th century.

    Anderson’s system transformed Half Dome from an β€œimpossible” summit into an adventurous tourist destination.

    Visitors climbed using ropes fixed to his bolts.

    Anderson reportedly hoped to build an even more elaborate wooden stairway or access system.

    He never completed the plan.

    The basic idea, however, survived.

    Modern hikers still reach the summit along essentially the same eastern shoulder.

    The modern Half Dome cable system dates to 1919.

    The Sierra Club constructed a pair of steel cables along the steep upper slabs.

    The cables are supported by metal posts during the regular hiking season.

    Wooden crossboards provide periodic footholds.

    The system allows experienced hikers to climb the final:

    approximately 400 vertical feet

    without conventional technical rock-climbing equipment.

    That does not make the section easy.

    The slope is extremely steep and exposed.

    Half Dome is one of Yosemite National Park’s most famous hikes.

    The conventional journey begins at Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley.

    The National Park Service classifies it as an extremely strenuous outing.

    The route initially climbs toward Vernal Fall.

    The Mist Trail ascends beside the Merced River and can become wet from waterfall spray during high-flow periods.

    Stone steps climb steeply through the canyon.

    Vernal Fall is spectacular, but the surrounding river requires extreme caution.

    Emerald Pool and the smooth Silver Apron above the waterfall are not swimming areas.

    Water-related accidents have caused numerous fatalities in Yosemite.

    Above Vernal Fall, the route continues toward Nevada Fall.

    The waterfall drops beside the granite dome of Liberty Cap.

    Hikers then enter Little Yosemite Valley.

    By this point, they have already climbed thousands of vertical feet.

    Half Dome still rises ahead.

    This long approach is one reason the hike should not be judged solely by the final cable section.

    🏞️ Little Yosemite Valley

    Little Yosemite Valley lies along the upper Merced River.

    It provides the most popular backcountry camping area for hikers completing Half Dome as an overnight trip.

    A wilderness permit is required for overnight camping.

    Backpackers using eligible trailheads may request Half Dome access as part of their wilderness permit process.

    Camping is not allowed on top of Half Dome itself.

    πŸ₯Ύ The Subdome

    The final major approach reaches the Subdome.

    Here the hike becomes dramatically steeper.

    Stone steps and exposed granite climb toward the base of the cables.

    There is little shade.

    The elevation approaches 8,000 feet.

    By the time hikers reach this point, many have already traveled six or seven miles and climbed thousands of feet.

    The Subdome also marks the permit-control area for access to the cables.

    🎫 Half Dome Permits

    A permit is required to ascend Half Dome when the cables are installed.

    The National Park Service introduced the permit system to:

    • Reduce overcrowding
    • Improve safety
    • Protect wilderness character
    • Reduce resource damage

    Current management limits access beyond the base of the Subdome to approximately:

    300 people per day

    This generally consists of about:

    • 225 day hikers
    • 75 backpackers

    Day-use permits are distributed through lotteries.

    The Half Dome cables are normally installed around late May, shortly before Memorial Day.

    They generally remain up until approximately mid-October.

    Hikers should always check current National Park Service conditions before planning an ascent.

    The park strongly discourages attempting the route when the cables are down.

    ⚠️ The Cables Are Serious

    The cable section is not a conventional trail.

    The granite is steep enough that a fall can become catastrophic.

    The cables provide hand support, but hikers must still manage:

    • Fatigue
    • Exposure
    • Crowding
    • Thin air
    • Smooth rock
    • Changing weather
    • Other hikers moving in both directions

    People uncomfortable with severe heights may find the experience overwhelming.

    Reaching the base of the cables is already a significant hiking achievement.

    Turning around is always preferable to continuing beyond one’s comfort or ability.

    🌧️ Wet Granite

    Wet weather dramatically increases the danger.

    Granite that provides reasonable friction when dry can become extremely slick when wet.

    The National Park Service notes that most major fatal cable falls have occurred during wet or icy conditions.

    Hikers should not ascend when:

    • Rain is falling
    • Rock is wet
    • Thunderstorms are nearby
    • Ice is present
    • Severe weather threatens

    A permit does not make conditions safe.

    ⚑ Lightning

    Half Dome is an exceptionally exposed summit.

    Summer thunderstorms can develop rapidly over the Sierra Nevada.

    Lightning on the summit is particularly dangerous because there is almost no shelter.

    The safest strategy is an early start and descent before afternoon storm development.

    Clouds building around the high country should be treated seriously.

    Waiting until lightning is already striking nearby is far too late.

    πŸ’§ Water

    The Half Dome hike is long, steep, dry in its upper reaches, and often hot.

    Hikers need substantial water.

    The National Park Service recommends careful hydration and adequate food, including salty snacks.

    Water obtained from natural streams should be properly treated.

    Running out of water several miles from Yosemite Valley can quickly turn an exhausting hike into an emergency.

    🐻 Food and Black Bears

    American black bears occur throughout Yosemite.

    They also travel through the wilderness along the Half Dome route.

    Bears are extraordinarily skilled at obtaining human food.

    Hikers should never leave backpacks containing food unattended, including at the base of the cables.

    Food-conditioned bears can lose natural behavior and may ultimately have to be managed or killed.

    Protecting food therefore protects both people and bears.

    🐿️ Squirrels and Chipmunks

    Squirrels, chipmunks, and Steller’s jays have also learned that hikers carry food.

    These animals may appear harmless, but feeding them is illegal and unhealthy.

    Human food changes behavior.

    Animals become aggressive.

    They may bite.

    They can also spread disease.

    Wildlife should remain wild even at heavily visited Yosemite destinations.

    The cable route represents only one way humans reach the summit.

    Half Dome is also one of the great landmarks in the history of American rock climbing.

    Its northwest face rises approximately:

    2,000 vertical feet

    in an almost continuous sweep of granite.

    For decades after Anderson climbed the eastern side, the northwest wall remained an entirely different challenge.

    It demanded techniques and equipment that did not yet exist.

    In 1957, Royal Robbins, Jerry Gallwas, and Mike Sherrick completed the first ascent of Half Dome’s Northwest Face.

    The climb took approximately five days.
