Sudan is often associated with the Nile Valley, the Sahara Desert, and the broad plains of the Sahel. Yet the country also contains several remarkable mountain regions, ranging from the volcanic highlands of Darfur to the rugged Red Sea Hills and the isolated granite peaks of the Nuba Mountains.

The country’s highest terrain is concentrated in the Jebel Marra massif, where the rim of the Deriba Caldera reaches approximately 3,042 meters (9,980 feet). Sudan’s highest mountain is also one of the country’s most geographically independent peaks. Its large prominence qualifies Jebel Marra as an ultra-prominent mountain.

📍 Where Are Sudan’s Mountains?

Sudan’s mountains are distributed around the edges of its broad central plains.

Western Sudan contains the country’s highest terrain in the Jebel Marra massif. These volcanic mountains rise from Darfur’s semi-arid plateau and contain craters, lava formations, high valleys, springs, and seasonal streams.

The Red Sea Hills extend through northeastern Sudan between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea coast. This rugged desert region continues northward into Egypt and southeastward toward Eritrea.

The Nuba Mountains occupy South Kordofan in south-central Sudan. Although their name suggests a continuous range, they are better described as numerous isolated hills and rocky massifs separated by plains and valleys.

Elevation figures vary among mapping and mountain databases. Some sources report approximately 3,012 meters, while others use 3,042 meters. The difference probably reflects varying interpretations of the highest rim point, mapping resolution, and the distinction between the broader mountain summit and specific points around the caldera.

Jebel Marra is not a single symmetrical volcanic cone. It is an extensive volcanic massif containing numerous peaks and secondary summits.

Volcanic history

The Jebel Marra volcanic field contains older basaltic lava flows overlain by pyroclastic deposits produced during explosive eruptions. Trachytic plugs, volcanic spines, scoria cones, and younger lava flows occur across the massif.

Deriba Caldera formed during a major explosive eruption approximately 3,500 years ago. Pyroclastic flows associated with that eruption traveled more than 30 kilometers from the volcano.

The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program lists the last known eruptive period at approximately 2000 BCE. Fumarolic activity has also been reported within the caldera, indicating that residual geothermal heat remains beneath the volcanic complex.

⛰️ Red Sea Hills

The Red Sea Hills form a long belt of rugged mountains in northeastern Sudan. They rise between the Nile basin and the Red Sea coastal plain, extending toward the borders of Egypt and Eritrea.

These mountains are much drier than Jebel Marra. Their landscape includes:

  • Sharp ridges
  • Rocky plateaus
  • Deep wadis
  • Granite and metamorphic peaks
  • Dry valleys
  • Sparse acacia vegetation

The underlying rocks belong largely to the Arabian–Nubian Shield, an ancient region of continental crust that extends across northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Many of these rocks formed during the Neoproterozoic Era, when volcanic island arcs, oceanic crust, and fragments of older landmasses collided and joined together. Later uplift and erosion exposed the deeply buried rocks visible today.

Mount Oda

Mount Oda is one of the most important peaks in the Red Sea Hills. It rises to approximately 2,259 meters (7,411 feet) and has about 1,837 meters of topographic prominence.

That prominence makes Mount Oda an ultra-prominent summit and one of Sudan’s most geographically independent mountains. Although it is considerably lower than Jebel Marra, it rises distinctly above the surrounding eastern desert terrain.

🪨 Nuba Mountains

The Nuba Mountains, also called the Nuba Hills, are located in South Kordofan. Despite their name, they are not part of neighboring South Sudan.

The region consists of hundreds of isolated hills, ridges, domes, and larger rocky massifs. Many rise abruptly from the surrounding plains as inselbergs—isolated mountains left standing after the erosion of softer surrounding rock.

The highest parts of the Nuba Mountains rise to approximately 1,325 meters (4,347 feet), although individual elevation figures vary by map and locality.

🪨 Geology of Sudan’s Mountains

Sudan’s mountain regions record several very different geological histories.

Ancient continental crust

The Red Sea Hills, Nuba Mountains, and Ingessana Hills expose rocks associated with the Arabian–Nubian Shield. These rocks formed hundreds of millions of years ago as volcanic arcs, small continental fragments, and oceanic crust were compressed and assembled.

Granite intrusions later solidified beneath the surface. Erosion eventually exposed these resistant rocks as mountain ridges and isolated massifs.

Volcanic mountain building

Jebel Marra developed through repeated volcanic eruptions. Lava, ash, pumice, and pyroclastic flows accumulated to create a broad volcanic highland.

The Bayuda Desert also contains volcanic cones and lava fields, although its volcanic features are generally smaller and lower.

Erosion and inselberg formation

Many isolated Sudanese mountains are erosional remnants. Hard rock resisted weathering while softer surrounding formations were lowered.

Sudan’s mountain climates vary according to latitude, elevation, and distance from the Red Sea.

However, Sudan is not presently an appropriate recreational hiking destination.

As of August 2026, the U.S. Department of State classifies Sudan as Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing armed conflict, crime, kidnapping, terrorism, landmines, health threats, and severe limits on emergency assistance. The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office also advises against all travel to Sudan.

Many mountain areas are remote, politically contested, affected by damaged infrastructure, or potentially contaminated by unexploded ordnance. Communications, transportation, medical care, maps, marked trails, and rescue services may be extremely limited or unavailable.
