Peru is one of the worldâs great mountain countries. The Andes extend through the nation from northwest to southeast, forming a vast highland region between the arid Pacific coast and the Amazon Basin. đ Where Are Peruâs Mountains?
The Peruvian Andes run roughly parallel to the Pacific coast. In broad geographic terms, they are divided into western, central, and eastern mountain belts, although their boundaries and names vary between maps and regional classification systems.
The Cordillera Occidental, or Western Cordillera, contains many of the countryâs highest peaks. It includes the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash in northern and central Peru, as well as the volcanic mountains of southern Peru.

A Note About Elevations
Published elevations for Peruvian mountains sometimes differ between national maps, scientific institutions, mountaineering references, and digital elevation databases. Differences are especially common on broad volcanic massifs and ice-covered summits whose surfaces can change over time.
Coropuna, for example, is traditionally listed at 6,425 meters, while the Instituto GeofĂsico del PerĂș currently gives an elevation of approximately 6,377 meters. Ausangate is commonly listed at either 6,384 or 6,372 meters, and estimates for Siula Grande range from approximately 6,344 to 6,360 meters. These discrepancies do not substantially change their importance among Peruâs highest principal mountains.

Cordillera Blanca
