Published elevations for some Hawaiian summits vary by a few feet depending on the survey, elevation datum, and source used.

Kīlauea is one of Hawaii’s best-known mountains, but it does not appear in this table because it lacks the 500 meters of independent topographic prominence required for inclusion. This demonstrates why mountain elevation and prominence describe different aspects of a summit.

🌋 Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea, also written Maunakea, is the highest mountain in Hawaii and the highest point anywhere in the Pacific Ocean. Its summit rises approximately 13,803 feet above sea level, but most of the mountain lies beneath the ocean.

The mountain is a shield volcano composed primarily of basalt. It is no longer in its most active stage, but geologists do not consider it extinct. Its most recent eruptions occurred several thousand years ago and produced lava flows and numerous cinder cones around the summit.

Although the summit depression is commonly called Haleakalā Crater, much of the present-day landform is an enormous erosional valley. Later eruptions partially filled the valley with lava flows and colorful cinder cones, creating the otherworldly landscape visible today.

Popular trails in the Summit District include the Keoneheʻeheʻe Trail, commonly called Sliding Sands, and the Halemauʻu Trail. These routes enter a landscape of volcanic cinders, cliffs, cones, and high-elevation shrublands.

Haleakalā is still considered an active volcano. Its most recent eruptions occurred only a few centuries ago along its rift zones.

Hualālai

Hualālai rises above the Kona coast of Hawaiʻi Island to approximately 8,271 feet. It is the fourth-highest major summit in the state and an active volcano.

Its most recent eruption occurred in 1801, producing lava flows that reached the ocean. Modern development now occupies parts of these relatively young lava fields, demonstrating how closely Hawaiian communities coexist with volcanic landscapes.

Hawaii’s mountains were created by a hotspot beneath the Pacific Plate. Magma rose through the oceanic crust, erupted on the seafloor, and gradually accumulated into enormous undersea volcanoes.

Eventually, the volcanoes grew high enough to emerge above sea level as islands. As the Pacific Plate continued moving northwest, each volcano was carried away from the hotspot. Volcanic activity generally declined while erosion became increasingly important.

The drier season generally extends from late spring through early autumn, although rain and cloud remain common in windward mountain areas. Winter brings a greater chance of strong storms, heavy rain, high winds, and snow or ice on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

Early mornings often provide clearer views before clouds build over the mountains. However, sunrise trips require additional preparation for darkness, cold temperatures, and limited visibility.
