🌋 How the Mariana Mountains Formed
The Mariana Islands lie near one of the world’s most dramatic tectonic boundaries. East of the island chain, the Pacific Plate descends beneath the Mariana Plate along the Mariana Trench.
As the descending plate moves deeper into Earth, heat and pressure release water and other volatile materials from its rocks. These materials help produce magma in the mantle above the plate. The magma then rises toward the surface, feeding volcanoes along the Mariana volcanic arc.
This process is an example of the geological forces described in How Are Mountains Formed?. The northern Mariana Islands remain close to the active volcanic front, while Guam and the major southern islands expose older parts of the arc.
The older southern islands
Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan began with volcanic foundations. Over time, coral reefs grew around and above portions of these islands. Limestone accumulated, the land was uplifted and erosion cut valleys, cliffs and ridges into the landscape.
This is why Saipan and Rota combine volcanic rock with large limestone plateaus and karst features.
The younger northern islands
Most islands north of Saipan are the exposed summits of large submarine volcanoes. Their visible land areas represent only a small portion of volcanic structures that rise thousands of meters from the ocean floor.

Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana chain. Its northern section is dominated by a relatively level limestone plateau, while southern Guam contains rugged volcanic hills, ridges, valleys and grasslands.

Mount Lamlam

The mountain rises in southwestern Guam near the villages of Agat and Humåtak. Although modest in elevation, it has substantial prominence because its surrounding terrain descends directly to the sea.

Mount Chachao
