Kula Kangri

Kula Kangri is a spectacular 7,538-meter (24,730-foot) mountain in the eastern Himalayas of Tibet, China, rising immediately north of Bhutan. Its broad, heavily glaciated massif contains several summits above 7,000 meters and dominates a remote corner of the Himalayas where the high Tibetan plateau meets the deep valleys of Bhutan.
For many years, Kula Kangri was widely described as the highest mountain in Bhutan. Modern mapping, however, places the principal summit north of the Bhutan–China boundary, within Lhozhag County in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Bhutan’s highest mountain is instead generally recognized as Gangkhar Puensum, which rises along the disputed Bhutan–China frontier.
Kula Kangri nevertheless remains closely connected with Bhutan geographically and historically. Its enormous southern slopes overlook Bhutanese territory, early photographs were taken from Bhutan, and it forms part of the mountainous landscape traditionally described as the Bhutan Himalaya.
The mountain was first climbed in 1986 by a large joint Japanese-Chinese expedition led by Professor Kazumasa Hirai. After years of negotiations for access, climbers reached the summit by the west ridge, establishing the first route on one of the highest peaks of the eastern Himalayas.

🏔️ Where Is Kula Kangri?
Kula Kangri rises in southern Tibet, immediately north of the Himalayan frontier with Bhutan. Its coordinates place the summit in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, roughly 166 kilometers south of Lhasa.

Kula Kangri, by contrast, is sufficiently separated from higher terrain to rank as an important mountain in its own right.

🗻 The Kula Kangri Massif
Kula Kangri is not a single isolated summit. It forms the western and highest point of a long ridge containing several major peaks.
The main summit, Kula Kangri I, reaches approximately 7,538 meters.
Kula Kangri Central, also known as Kula Kangri II, rises to approximately 7,418 meters (24,337 feet).
Kula Kangri East, or Kula Kangri III, reaches approximately 7,381 meters (24,216 feet).
Both secondary summits lie east of the main peak along the same high ridge.
Farther east lies the Karjiang group, including peaks above 7,000 meters.
The entire region forms an extraordinary chain of high Himalayan summits separated by glaciers, cols, and enormous snow-and-ice faces.
📜 Early Exploration
Kula Kangri remained surprisingly little known to mountaineers through much of the early 20th century.
British explorers F. M. Bailey and Henry Morshead Mead surveyed the mountain during the early 1920s, helping establish its location and extraordinary height.
Yet photographs of Kula Kangri remained rare.
In 1958, Japanese botanist Shiro Nakao traveled in Bhutan and photographed a huge mountain from the south. Expedition leader Kazumasa Hirai later suggested this was probably the first widely available photograph showing Kula Kangri clearly.
Swiss geologist Augusto Gansser, whose research transformed scientific understanding of Bhutan’s geology, also documented the mountain during his work in the Himalayas.
These images revealed a vast glaciated massif that had received virtually no serious mountaineering exploration.
🧭 The Long Road to an Expedition
Professor Kazumasa Hirai and climbers associated with Kobe University became interested in Kula Kangri after their successful ascent of Sherpi Kangri in the Karakoram.
Beginning around 1978, Hirai opened discussions with Chinese mountaineering authorities about gaining permission for an expedition.
At the time, large areas of Tibet were closed to foreign travelers, and mountaineering access was still developing after decades of political isolation.
Negotiations continued for years.
Permission to attempt Kula Kangri was finally granted at the end of 1984, nearly seven years after Hirai had begun the process.
A small reconnaissance party entered the region in April 1985.
The climbers examined two possible approaches: the west ridge and the east ridge.
The west ridge was shorter but steeper. The east ridge appeared considerably longer and more exposed to avalanche danger.
They chose the west ridge.
🧗 The 1986 First-Ascent Expedition
The main expedition assembled in Lhasa in March 1986.
It was an unusually large undertaking, combining mountaineering with scientific research.
The Japanese contingent included climbers, scientists, television personnel, journalists, and expedition leader Kazumasa Hirai. Seventeen Chinese participants joined them, including climbers and scientists.
Altogether, the expedition numbered 42 people.
The team traveled from Lhasa by trucks, jeeps, and minibuses, reaching Base Camp north of Kula Kangri on March 17.
Base Camp stood at approximately 4,400–4,450 meters.
Yaks and horses then transported equipment higher into the mountains.
Advanced Base Camp was established at roughly 5,300 meters beside a frozen glacial lake, while Camp I stood at approximately 5,700 meters near the beginning of the west ridge.
🧊 Reaching the West Ridge
The terrain became difficult immediately above Camp I.
A steep ice wall approximately 400 meters high blocked access to the west ridge.
Some sections approached 70 degrees.
Climbers spent several days establishing a route through the ice while dealing with powerful winds that repeatedly interrupted progress.
Camp II was finally established on the west ridge at approximately 6,200 meters on April 1.
From there, the ridge rose in a succession of steep steps complicated by crevasses, exposed snow, and broken terrain.
Camp III was established at approximately 6,800 meters on April 11.
One major obstacle remained.

🧗 The Upper Mountain
At around 7,000 meters, the west ridge was blocked by a rock wall approximately 70 meters high.
Rather than climbing directly over the obstacle, the expedition discovered a way around it by traversing onto the mountain’s southern side.
The climbers made an approximately 250-meter traverse — briefly moving toward the Bhutan-facing side of the mountain — before finding a steep snow slope leading back toward the summit ridge.
Camp IV was dug into the snow at approximately 7,100 meters.
From there, the summit was close in horizontal distance but remained guarded by steep ice and an exposed, heavily corniced ridge.
🏆 First Ascent — April 21, 1986
On April 21, 1986, C. Itani, J. Sakamoto, H. Ozaki, and E. Ohtani left the highest camp for the summit.
Temperatures were approximately −30°C, but the weather was clear.
The climbers ascended ice slopes of around 40 degrees until reaching the summit ridge at midday.
From there, they followed an exposed knife-edge crest beneath an enormous cornice.
At 4:15 p.m., all four reached the summit of Kula Kangri.
The summit was so small that expedition leader Kazumasa Hirai later wrote that two climbers could not comfortably stand on the very top at the same time.
From the summit, the climbers had sweeping views across the Bhutan Himalaya, including Gangkhar Puensum to the southwest.
After approximately an hour on top, they descended safely.
🧗 The Second Summit Team
The expedition’s success was repeated the following day.
On April 22, T. Morinaga and H. Hasegawa climbed the same route and reached the summit at approximately 2:15 p.m.
Weather remained unusually favorable during both summit days.
The climbers descended safely, and the expedition withdrew from the mountain shortly afterward.
The first ascent was therefore unusually successful for such a remote and high objective, with six climbers reaching the summit during two consecutive days.
🧪 A Scientific Expedition
The 1986 expedition was unusual because mountaineering formed only one part of its purpose.
Japanese and Chinese scientists conducted research in fields including botany, entomology, geology, geomorphology, anthropology, and sociology.
Some members continued eastward after leaving the mountain, traveling thousands of kilometers across Tibet and western China toward Chengdu.
The expedition therefore contributed not only to Himalayan climbing history but also to the scientific exploration of regions that had been extremely difficult for foreign researchers to access.
This combination explains its formal title: the Kobe University Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition to Tibet.
🧗 The Second Ascent in 1994
Kula Kangri was climbed for the second time in 1994 by an Austrian expedition.
The team approached from the north after entering Tibet from Nepal and established Base Camp at approximately 5,200 meters.
They again selected the west ridge.
On May 1, Kurt Ebner and Peter Weingartner made a summit attempt. Weingartner turned back at approximately 7,400 meters, while Ebner continued to the summit.
Two days later, Helmut Ortner, Otto Plattner, and Anton Dollfuss also reached the top.
During the ascent, the Austrians discovered a tent left by the 1986 Japanese expedition high on the mountain.
The successful climb confirmed the west ridge as the principal established route on Kula Kangri.
🧗 The 1997 Spanish Ascent
A Spanish expedition made the third recorded ascent of the main summit in 1997.
The expedition is particularly important because observations made during the climb helped clarify the status of the eastern summits.
Early reports suggested that the Spanish team might also have climbed Kula Kangri Central and Kula Kangri East.
Later examination showed that they had climbed only the main summit.
The climbers themselves noted that the two eastern summits appeared to remain untouched.
That observation set the stage for another expedition four years later.
🏔️ First Ascents of Kula Kangri Central and East
In 2001, a joint Japanese-Tibetan expedition led by Yoshitsugu Deriha and Tseden Jigmy targeted Kula Kangri’s unclimbed secondary summits.
The expedition approached from the north and established a high camp at approximately 7,100 meters.
On May 2, two Tibetan and two Japanese climbers reached Kula Kangri Central, approximately 7,418 meters.
Two days later, on May 4, three Tibetan and six Japanese climbers reached Kula Kangri East, approximately 7,381 meters.
These climbs completed the first ascents of the three principal high points of the Kula Kangri massif.
The expedition subsequently attempted to traverse from the secondary summits toward Kula Kangri Main but turned back because of deteriorating weather.
⚠️ The 2008 Tragedy
Kula Kangri’s climbing history also includes a serious accident.
In autumn 2008, a Japanese expedition attempted the mountain with the ambitious objective of climbing the previously unclimbed north ridge and traversing the East, Central, and Main summits.
On October 1, climbers Satoshi Arimura, Yoshinobu Kato, and Susumu Nakamura were working on a spur leading toward the north ridge when communication was suddenly lost.
A search team later discovered all three bodies at approximately 6,000 meters.
Evidence suggested that an avalanche had swept them from the slope.
The expedition was immediately abandoned.
The accident was a reminder that even relatively moderate snow slopes beneath Himalayan giants can present deadly objective hazards.
🧊 Glaciers and Terrain
Kula Kangri is surrounded by an extensive system of glaciers.
The northern approaches used by most expeditions involve long moraine-covered glaciers before climbers even reach the west ridge.
The first-ascent expedition described approximately 20 kilometers of travel between Base Camp and Camp I.
Above the glacier, the mountain contains steep ice walls, crevasses, rocky barriers, snow slopes, and heavily corniced ridges.
Avalanche danger is particularly significant.
Expeditions have repeatedly altered routes or abandoned attempts because of unstable snow and serac hazards.
The west ridge became the standard route partly because other lines appeared to expose climbers to even greater objective danger.
🌦️ Climate and Weather
Kula Kangri lies at the climatic transition between the high Tibetan plateau and the much wetter southern Himalayan slopes.
The Tibetan side is relatively dry and exposed, while the Bhutan-facing slopes receive substantially more moisture from the South Asian monsoon.
At high elevations, however, conditions are severe on every side.
Temperatures can fall far below freezing even during the spring and autumn climbing seasons. Strong winds sweep the exposed ridges, while storms can deposit large amounts of unstable snow.
The first-ascent expedition repeatedly lost climbing days to violent winds.
At more than 7,500 meters, low atmospheric oxygen adds another major challenge. Climbers experience dramatically reduced physical performance, slow recovery, impaired judgment, and an increased risk of high-altitude illness.
🌿 Flora and Fauna
The summit and upper slopes of Kula Kangri support essentially no vegetation.
Permanent snow, glaciers, exposed rock, extreme cold, and the lack of developed soil create an environment beyond the limits of ordinary vascular plant growth.
Lower elevations are much more biologically diverse.
On the relatively dry Tibetan side, alpine steppe, grasses, sedges, and hardy shrubs survive in sheltered valleys and near seasonal water sources.
The southern Bhutan-facing valleys receive considerably more precipitation and support richer alpine vegetation before eventually descending into forests.
The broader eastern Himalayan landscape provides habitat for high-altitude wildlife including blue sheep, Himalayan ungulates, marmots, pikas, raptors, and snow leopards.
Near the summit itself, however, the landscape is dominated almost completely by rock, snow, and ice.
🙏 Cultural Significance
Kula Kangri is regarded as a sacred mountain within Tibetan cultural tradition.
Like many great Himalayan summits, it belongs to a landscape where mountains, lakes, passes, and valleys can hold religious as well as geographical significance.
The Tibetan name contains “Kangri,” a common term referring to a snow mountain or snowy peak.
Historical expedition accounts also recorded evidence of traditional travel between Tibet and Bhutan near the mountain.
At a high col used during the 1986 expedition, climbers found a prayer flag and the skeleton of a yak, reminders that these remote Himalayan passes had been crossed long before modern mountaineers arrived.

Kula Kangri stands within an extraordinary collection of high peaks along the northern edge of Bhutan.
Gangkhar Puensum lies approximately 25 kilometers to the southwest and is Kula Kangri’s nearest higher neighbor. It rises to roughly 7,570 meters and is widely regarded as the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.
Karjiang lies east of the Kula Kangri massif and contains several major summits above 7,000 meters.
Farther west, Jomolhari rises on the Bhutan–Tibet frontier to approximately 7,326 meters.
Together, these mountains form part of the spectacular eastern Himalayas, a region characterized by enormous relief, extensive glaciers, high biodiversity, and relatively low levels of mountaineering activity compared with Nepal’s central Himalayas.
🧭 Can Kula Kangri Be Climbed Today?
