Passu Sar (پسو سر, Passu Sar, Passu I)

Passu Sar is a 7,476-meter (24,528-foot) mountain in the Batura Muztagh of the Karakoram in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Rising above the upper Hunza Valley near the village of Passu, it is the highest summit of the Passu massif and one of the major 7,000-meter mountains forming the eastern end of the enormous Batura Wall.
The mountain is sometimes written Pasu Sar and is also known as Passu I. It should not be confused with Passu Diar, also called Passu East or Passu II, a lower summit of approximately 7,295 meters lying east of the main peak. This distinction has created one of the most persistent historical complications in Passu Sar’s climbing record.
Pakistani mountaineering records credit a joint Pakistan–Japan expedition with the first ascent of “Passu Peak” in 1978. Contemporary Himalayan Club records, however, list that expedition’s mountain at only about 7,257 meters, closely matching Passu Diar rather than the 7,476-meter main summit. Later American Alpine Journal research specifically concluded that the higher Passu Sar remained unclimbed until a German expedition reached it in 1994.
The best-supported first ascent of Passu Sar proper therefore took place on August 7, 1994, when Germans Max Wallner, Dirk Naumann, Ralf Lehmann, and Volker Wurnig reached the summit after climbing through the Passu Glacier. The ascent was particularly unusual because the climbers used skis for much of the route and descent.
The four Germans established a high camp at approximately 6,000 meters before setting out at 4:30 a.m. Their summit day lasted thirteen hours before they reached the top at approximately 5:30 p.m. The descent on skis was exhausting because of poor snow conditions and tired legs, but the team returned successfully before worsening weather ended the expedition.
Passu Sar remained a remarkably quiet mountain afterward. An Australian expedition arrived in 2001 expecting that the summit might still be unclimbed, only to discover the 1994 German record shortly before departure. Their attempt ended low on the mountain when a huge and highly complicated icefall made the direct Passu Glacier route too dangerous for a lightweight team.
The mountain returned to international attention in 2022, when British climber James Price made a solo ascent as the opening stage of an extraordinarily ambitious attempt to traverse the Batura Wall. Price reached Passu Sar after approaching the upper Passu Glacier through an alternative line from the Batura side. He then tried to continue northwest toward Muchu Chhish and the main Batura massif.
Strong winds, poor visibility, and enormous cornices forced him back almost immediately. Price bivouacked on or very close to the summit for approximately 30 hours while waiting for conditions to improve. Eventually he abandoned the traverse and descended through heavy snowfall, suffering severe frostbite to both feet.
Passu Sar consequently combines several fascinating identities. It is a huge but relatively low-prominence summit, a landmark above one of the most accessible inhabited valleys of the Karakoram, a mountain with a confusing first-ascent history, a rare high-altitude ski objective, and the eastern gateway to one of the longest continuous 7,000-meter ridgelines on Earth.

🏔️ Where Is Passu Sar?
Passu Sar rises in the Batura Muztagh, the westernmost major subrange of the Karakoram. It stands above the upper Hunza Valley in the Gojal region of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The mountain lies west of the Hunza River and northwest of Shispare. Batura Sar, the highest summit of the Batura Muztagh, rises farther northwest along the same enormous high ridge.
Passu village lies at much lower elevation beside the Karakoram Highway, making the general mountain landscape considerably more accessible than remote regions such as the upper Baltoro or Hispar.
That accessibility ends quickly once climbers leave the valley.
The mountain itself is hidden behind heavily broken glaciers, high subsidiary peaks, and enormous snow basins. Reaching the upper Passu Glacier requires genuine expedition mountaineering rather than an ordinary trek from the highway.
📏 How High Is Passu Sar?
Peakbagger gives Passu Sar an elevation of 7,476 meters (24,528 feet).
The closely related figure of 7,478 meters (24,535 feet) appears throughout modern climbing literature, including the American Alpine Journal account of the 1994 first ascent.
A difference of two meters is insignificant for practical mountaineering purposes and reflects normal variation between topographic datasets.
Some historical sources used considerably different figures, including approximately 7,440 meters and 7,530 meters.
These discrepancies contributed to the confusion between Passu Sar and neighboring Passu Diar.
For a modern geographical profile, 7,476 meters is the most internally consistent figure because it matches contemporary prominence and isolation mapping.
📐 Prominence and Isolation
Passu Sar has approximately 645 meters (2,116 feet) of clean topographic prominence.
Its key col lies at approximately 6,831 meters (22,411 feet).
Its topographic isolation is approximately 5.37 kilometers (3.34 miles), with higher terrain reached toward Batura VI.
These statistics make Passu Sar an interesting example of how extreme elevation does not necessarily equal extreme topographic independence.
A mountain rising to nearly 7,500 meters would dominate almost any other range on Earth.
In the Batura Muztagh, the surrounding ridges are themselves so high that Passu Sar rises only about 645 meters above the saddle connecting it with the greater Batura massif.
It is therefore a major summit but not an ultra-prominent mountain.
🧱 The Eastern End of the Batura Wall
Passu Sar forms the eastern end of the extraordinary chain usually called the Batura Wall.
The wall contains an almost continuous sequence of high summits extending westward from Passu Sar through Muchu Chhish and several Batura summits toward Batura Sar.
Moving west from Passu Sar, the principal summits include Muchu Chhish, Batura VI, Batura V, Batura I, Batura II, Batura III, and Batura IV, depending on the particular cartographic numbering system used.
Many sections of the main crest remain above 7,000 meters for kilometers at a time.
This extraordinary ridge architecture is one reason the Batura group has long attracted climbers interested in traverses rather than individual summit ascents.
No complete high traverse of the entire wall has yet become a routine or established climb.
🏔️ Passu Sar and Batura Sar
Batura Sar rises approximately seven kilometers northwest along the broader mountain chain and reaches around 7,795 meters.
It is the highest mountain of the Batura Muztagh.
Passu Sar is therefore not the dominant topographic summit of the wall, but it occupies an important position at its eastern end.
The terrain between the two mountains is anything but a simple connecting ridge.
Multiple 7,000-meter summits intervene, including Muchu Chhish and Batura VI.
The entire crest contains high cols, cornices, mixed terrain, and extensive glacier systems.
James Price’s 2022 attempt to link Passu Sar with the Batura group demonstrated how formidable this seemingly logical traverse remains.
🏔️ Passu Sar and Shispare
Shispare rises southeast of Passu Sar to approximately 7,611 meters.
The two mountains form some of the most spectacular scenery above the Passu Glacier.
Shispare is significantly more prominent than Passu Sar and presents a sharper, more independent summit profile.
Its climbing history also began earlier, with a Polish–West German expedition making the first ascent in 1974.
Passu Sar remained uncertain for another two decades.
The two mountains are separated by complicated glacial and ridge systems rather than a simple walking connection.
From viewpoints around Passu and Patundas, however, they can appear as part of one enormous high-mountain amphitheater.
🏔️ Passu Sar and Ultar Sar
Ultar Sar lies farther southeast toward Karimabad and reaches approximately 7,388 meters.
Ultar is slightly lower than Passu Sar but rises far more dramatically above the Hunza Valley.
Its immense relief and steep walls made it one of the last famous unclimbed peaks of the Karakoram before Japanese climbers finally reached its summit in 1996.
Passu Sar is broader and more heavily glaciated.
Both mountains belong to the Batura Muztagh, and both can be seen from parts of the Hunza region.
Their climbing problems are very different.
Ultar is renowned for steep mixed terrain and avalanche-prone walls, while Passu Sar’s established routes are dominated more by complex glacier navigation and high snowfields.
🏔️ Passu Sar and Muchu Chhish
Muchu Chhish rises immediately northwest of Passu Sar and reaches approximately 7,453 meters.
For many years, it was frequently described as one of the world’s highest unclimbed mountains with sufficient prominence to be treated as a distinct summit.
Its position is extraordinary.
Muchu Chhish is almost as high as Passu Sar yet lies within the continuous Batura Wall between Passu Sar and Batura VI.
After numerous attempts, Czech climbers Zdeněk Hák, Radoslav Groh, and Jaroslav Bánský completed its first ascent in 2024.
Their route climbed the south spur of Batura V before following the high ridge east toward Muchu Chhish.
Passu Sar was clearly visible immediately beyond the summit.
The ascent demonstrated how much major unexplored climbing still remained in the Batura Wall well into the 21st century.
🏔️ The Passu Massif
Passu Sar is the highest summit of the broader Passu massif.
The second major summit is Passu Diar, also called Passu East or Passu II, at approximately 7,295 meters.
Several lower subsidiary peaks complete the complex, including Passu North, approximately 6,884 meters, and another southeastern subsidiary known in some Japanese records as Passu Diar East.
These names have caused considerable confusion.
Older maps sometimes used “Passu Peak” without clearly specifying which summit was intended.
Expeditions themselves occasionally used different naming conventions.
As a result, published first-ascent claims do not always refer to the same topographic point.
Modern cartography associated with Jerzy Wala and later climbing historians has helped clarify the massif.
🧭 Passu Sar vs. Passu Diar
Understanding the difference between Passu Sar and Passu Diar is essential to interpreting the mountain’s history.
Passu Sar is the western and higher principal summit at approximately 7,476–7,478 meters.
Passu Diar lies east of it at approximately 7,295 meters.
The two are separated by high glacier and ridge terrain usually associated with the Passu Terrace.
From some angles, the lower summit can obscure or visually merge with the main peak.
Historical elevation measurements further complicated matters.
An expedition reporting a “Passu Peak” ascent at around 7,250–7,300 meters was probably not talking about today’s clearly defined Passu Sar main summit.
That appears to be exactly what happened in 1978.
🇵🇰🇯🇵 The 1978 Pakistan–Japan Expedition
The Alpine Club of Pakistan records a joint Pakistan–Japan expedition to Passu Peak in 1978.
The expedition was led on the Japanese side by Captain Chitoshi Ando, while Major Manzoor Hussain served as Pakistani leader.
Pakistani climbers reached the summit, and the climb became an important achievement in the early development of organized Pakistani mountaineering.
The expedition also suffered tragedy when Japanese climber Toshio Takahashi fell into a crevasse around 5,800 meters and died.
Pakistani records describe the objective as “Passu Peak main” and give an elevation around 7,440 meters.
Other historical records tell a different story.
🧩 Why the 1978 Ascent Is Disputed
The Himalayan Club’s expedition summary for 1978 lists the joint Pakistan–Japan climb simply as Passu, 7,257 meters.
That elevation corresponds far more closely with Passu Diar than with the modern 7,476-meter Passu Sar.
Modern historical compilations of the Batura Muztagh likewise list Passu Diar as first climbed in 1978 and Passu Sar as first climbed in 1994.
The confusion may have arisen because “Passu Peak” was used broadly for the massif before summit names became standardized.
The 2001 Australian expedition investigated the question carefully.
The climbers had originally believed Passu Sar might still be unclimbed.
Before departing, they found Max Wallner’s 1994 German report.
After reaching Hunza, they spoke with a local high-altitude porter in Gulmit who confirmed that the Germans had climbed the higher summit rather than Passu Diar.
The modern climbing record therefore generally separates the ascents:

🇩🇪 The 1994 German Expedition
The accepted first ascent of Passu Sar itself came from a German team associated with the Deutscher Alpenverein.
The four summit climbers were:

Ralf Lehmann
Dr. Volker Wurnig
Their expedition traveled north along the Karakoram Highway before entering the Passu Glacier.
The approach was dramatically shorter than the weeks-long caravan journeys required by many central Karakoram expeditions.
After approximately two days of walking from the valley, the team established Base Camp at around 4,000 meters on a flower-covered meadow beside the glacier.
Above them lay the real obstacle: a complicated passage through the broken Passu Glacier.
🧊 Finding a Route Through the Glacier
The Germans spent several days searching for a viable route.
Instead of climbing directly through the center of the most chaotic icefall, they discovered a trough beside the glacier’s icefalls.
The line still required fixed rope.
Avalanches from seracs above threatened the route.
The danger became very real while the climbers were moving loads to Camp I.
An avalanche swept down close enough that the team was nearly engulfed.
Nevertheless, the route worked.
Camp I was established at approximately 5,000 meters on August 1.
From there, the climbers continued upward through increasingly high glacier terrain.
🏕️ Camp II at 6,000 Meters
The next objective was a camp at approximately 6,000 meters.
A giant crevasse or gap in the glacier blocked straightforward progress.
The obstacle was so large that the team lost an entire day finding a way through it.
The eventual solution required descending into the gap and climbing its near-vertical opposite wall.
This episode shows why Passu Sar’s easiest historical route should not be described as an ordinary snow walk.
Technical rock or mixed climbing may not dominate the mountain, but glacier engineering and route finding are central to the ascent.
Once Camp II was established, the summit team prepared for its final push.
🌄 August 7, 1994
Wallner, Naumann, Lehmann, and Wurnig left Camp II at approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 7.
For hours they climbed without even seeing Passu Sar’s actual summit.
Only around 9 a.m. did the main peak finally appear.
They still had most of the day’s work ahead.
The upper route crossed broad snow and glacier terrain and bypassed the lower Passu Diar summit through a high shallow saddle.
The team’s use of skis helped movement over appropriate sections but did not eliminate the physical effort required at extreme altitude.
Hours passed.
Late afternoon arrived before the four climbers finally reached the top.
🏆 First Ascent — August 7, 1994
At approximately 5:30 p.m., after thirteen hours of climbing, Max Wallner, Dirk Naumann, Ralf Lehmann, and Volker Wurnig reached the summit of Passu Sar.
Wallner’s expedition report used an elevation of 7,478 meters, or 24,535 feet.
The climb became the first clearly documented ascent of the modern main summit.
The hour was already late.
The team therefore began descending immediately.
Skis offered the possibility of a faster return but conditions were poor.
Wallner later emphasized that skiing back toward Camp II was anything but enjoyable.
The climbers were exhausted, and the snow surface had deteriorated.
They nevertheless descended safely.
🎿 One of the Karakoram’s Great Ski Ascents
The 1994 climb deserves greater attention in the history of high-altitude ski mountaineering.
Passu Sar rises well above 7,000 meters, yet Wallner and his companions deliberately integrated skis into both approach and descent.
This was not a modern supported ski expedition with helicopters, prepared camps, or extensive infrastructure.
The team had to solve the Passu Glacier independently, carry equipment through dangerous icefalls, cross large crevasses, and climb from a 6,000-meter camp to the summit.
The skis were simply another mountaineering tool.
When snow conditions were favorable, they allowed more efficient movement.
When the snow became poor, as on the summit descent, skiing created an additional challenge.
The climb nevertheless demonstrated the extraordinary potential of the broad snowfields of the Passu massif for highly experienced expedition ski mountaineers.
🌨️ Weather Ends the 1994 Expedition
Wallner’s team had hoped to climb the lower Passu II / Passu Diar after completing Passu Sar.
Weather prevented it.
Rain reached lower elevations while heavy snow accumulated higher on the mountain.
The team abandoned its second objective.
Ironically, the peak they did not climb was probably the summit reached by the Pakistan–Japan expedition sixteen years earlier.
The weather shift also reinforced the importance of timing.
The Germans had enjoyed approximately four weeks of generally stable conditions before their summit push.
That unusually long spell allowed them to solve the glacier and establish camps.
Once the weather pattern changed, continuing became much more difficult.
🇦🇺 The 2001 Australian Attempt
A five-person Australian team led by Damien Gildea arrived in 2001.
The expedition is particularly valuable historically because its research helped clarify the first-ascent confusion.
Gildea’s team initially believed Passu Sar was still unclimbed and therefore one of the highest remaining virgin summits in the Karakoram.
Shortly before departure, they learned of the 1994 German ascent.
The information did not end their plans.
Instead, they hoped to make a repeat ascent.
They established Base Camp close to the Passu Glacier in June.
The mountain they found was not the mountain described by the 1994 Germans.
🧊 A Changed Passu Glacier
The Australians had expected the lower glacier to be heavily crevassed but negotiable.
Instead, they discovered a giant icefall beginning around 4,200 meters and gaining more than 800 vertical meters.
The icefall was extremely complex.
Gildea believed a succession of dry winters had dramatically reduced protective snow cover and exposed more of the broken glacier.
The team was operating in lightweight style and decided the route was simply too dangerous.
They abandoned the attempt before committing to the upper mountain.
The difference between 1994 and 2001 is one of the most important lessons in Passu Sar’s climbing history.
A successful route through a glacier is never permanent.
The glacier itself moves.
🧊 Why Glacier Routes Change
Glaciers flow continuously under their own weight.
Where the underlying terrain steepens, the ice fractures into seracs and crevasses.
Warmer summers, changing snowfall, glacier thinning, and short-term flow variations can transform an approach dramatically.
The Passu Glacier is particularly active because it descends steeply toward the Hunza Valley.
A passage beside an icefall may gradually collapse.
A previously hidden rock wall may become exposed.
Crevasses may widen until they become impossible to cross.
This explains why expedition reports should never be treated as permanent guidebooks.
The 1994 route shows where a passage once existed.
The 2001 attempt proves that it did not remain unchanged.
🇬🇧 James Price and the Passu Mountains
British climber James Price developed an unusually close relationship with the Hunza region.
He was in Pakistan when international travel was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic and spent months living in the Hunza Valley.
Rather than treating the region purely as an expedition destination, Price became familiar with the local communities and surrounding mountains.
He returned repeatedly for small, lightweight climbing projects.
In 2021, he made a new route on Passu Diar, a probable first ascent of Passu North, and a new route on Maidon Sar.
Those climbs gave him detailed knowledge of the glacier systems surrounding Passu Sar.
The following year, he planned something far more ambitious.
🧗 The Dream of Traversing the Batura Wall
Price’s goal in 2022 was not simply to climb Passu Sar.
He wanted to traverse the Batura Wall solo from southeast to northwest.
The concept was extraordinary.
Starting near Passu, he hoped to climb Passu Sar, descend its northwest ridge, cross Muchu Chhish, continue over Batura VI and the greater Batura massif, and eventually emerge far to the northwest.
The route would involve days or weeks above 6,500–7,000 meters.
Muchu Chhish was still unclimbed at the time.
No team had completed anything comparable along the entire wall.
Price planned to attempt it alone, carrying his own supplies.
🎒 Leaving Passu Village
Price left Passu village on September 11, 2022, carrying approximately 30 kilograms of equipment and three weeks of supplies.
Skis formed an important part of his system.
Rather than attempt to repeat the dangerous direct route through the lower Passu Glacier, he used knowledge gained during 2021 to find an alternative.
He climbed through the Batura Glacier system and followed the north ridge of Hiriz, a roughly 5,550-meter peak.
From there, he crossed the dividing ridge into the hidden basin sometimes called the Passu Cwm.
This approach avoided much of the enormous lower Passu Glacier icefall that had defeated the Australians in 2001.
🧊 Into the Upper Passu Glacier
From the Passu Cwm, Price climbed west through another complicated icefall to reach the Upper Passu Glacier.
He was alone.
Solo glacier travel is especially dangerous because there is no partner available to arrest a fall or perform a crevasse rescue.
Price carried a long pole across sections of the glacier, a traditional technique intended to reduce the chance of disappearing completely into a hidden crevasse.
Skis also helped distribute weight across snow bridges.
The system reduced some risks without eliminating them.
Eventually he reached the high terrain near Passu Diar.
He bypassed the large rocky summit on its north side and gained the ridge leading west toward Passu Sar.
🏆 Solo Ascent — 2022
From the Passu Diar area, Price continued approximately three kilometers along the high crest toward Passu Sar.
He reached the summit at approximately 7,470 meters.
The climb appears to have been only one of a tiny number of documented ascents of the mountain.
A later Piolets d’Or profile describes Price’s climb as the third ascent of Passu Sar.
Public expedition records do not clearly identify every intervening successful summit ascent, however, so it is safer to say that his climb was one of the mountain’s very few documented repeats rather than present a complete ascent count as certain.
For Price, the summit was supposed to mark the beginning rather than the end of the expedition.
The northwest ridge beckoned.
🌬️ Toward Muchu Chhish
The northwest ridge drops from Passu Sar toward a pass around 6,900 meters.
Beyond it rises Muchu Chhish.
Price began descending toward the col.
Conditions quickly deteriorated.
Strong winds swept the ridge.
Visibility collapsed.
Large cornices made identifying the safe crest extremely difficult.
Continuing alone into unfamiliar terrain would have committed him to one of the least explored high ridges in the Karakoram during a storm.
He turned around and returned to the summit of Passu Sar.
There was nowhere easy to go.
Price set up a bivouac and waited.
🥶 Thirty Hours Near the Summit
The storm did not pass.
Price remained near the summit of Passu Sar for approximately 30 hours.
Temperatures fell to roughly -25°C, while strong winds and snow battered the mountain.
At nearly 7,500 meters, prolonged inactivity creates a dangerous problem.
The body is already receiving very little oxygen.
Generating heat is difficult.
Eating and drinking require effort.
Snow can bury equipment.
Frostbite risk rises rapidly.
Price later described drifting between sleep and reality during the long bivouac.
Eventually he realized waiting longer was more dangerous than retreating through the storm.
He abandoned the Batura traverse.
⚠️ Frostbite on the Descent
The descent was long and difficult.
Heavy snow covered the route.
Price was still alone and had to reverse his passage through the high glacier systems toward Passu.
He suffered severe frostbite to both feet during the retreat.
The injury ended any possibility of continuing through the Batura massif.
After approximately eighteen days in the mountain system, he eventually returned toward civilization.
The failed traverse nevertheless produced a significant ascent of Passu Sar and demonstrated a modern alternative approach to the upper glacier.
It also illustrated why the apparently smooth ridge from Passu Sar toward Muchu Chhish remains such a formidable undertaking.
At 7,000 meters, cornices and weather can be more important than technical climbing grades.
🧱 Muchu Chhish Is Finally Climbed — 2024
Two years after Price’s attempt, Muchu Chhish received its first confirmed ascent.
Czech climbers Jaroslav Bánský, Radoslav Groh, and Zdeněk Hák approached from the south rather than traversing from Passu Sar.
They climbed a spur on Batura V, following much of the line attempted by a Polish–German expedition in 1983.
After reaching the main Batura ridge, they traversed east toward Muchu Chhish.
A final 150-meter headwall led to the summit.
Passu Sar stood immediately beyond them along the continuing ridge.
The 2024 ascent removed one of the great unclimbed summits from the Batura Wall but did not solve the much larger traverse problem Price had attempted.
🧊 The Passu Glacier
The Passu Glacier flows eastward from the high basin between Passu Sar, Passu Diar, Shispare, and surrounding mountains.
The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan identifies the glacier as one of the principal tourist features near Passu village.
