Crestone Peak rises to approximately 14,299 feet (4,358 meters) in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, forming the highest summit of the rugged Crestone Group and one of the state’s most impressive technical fourteeners. Its enormous walls rise above the San Luis Valley near the town of Crestone, creating a jagged skyline shared with Crestone Needle, Kit Carson Peak, Challenger Point, and Humboldt Peak.

For generations, climbers treated the western summit—the officially named Crestone Peak—as the mountain’s highest point. Remarkably precise measurements completed in October 2025 changed that understanding. Differential GPS surveying found the neighboring East Summit to be approximately 3.5 inches higher than the traditional West Summit.

The difference is almost comically small, but topographically it matters. The East Summit is now considered the true high point of the Crestone massif, reaching approximately 14,299.3 feet, while the traditional West Summit measures about 14,299.0 feet.

The true high point has approximately 4,582 feet of prominence and about 27.4 miles of isolation, making Crestone Peak one of Colorado’s most geographically significant mountains as well as one of its most serious climbing objectives.

The standard South Face route follows the famous Red Gully, a long Class 3 scramble through unusually solid conglomerate rock. The climb is technically easier than neighboring Crestone Needle’s standard route but remains a committing alpine undertaking involving substantial distance, route finding, exposure, loose rock, high altitude, and rapidly changing weather.

Crestone Peak’s nearest higher neighbor lies toward Blanca Peak, the highest summit of the entire Sangre de Cristo Range. Mosca Pass forms the key col connecting the Crestone massif with higher terrain to the south.

📍 Where Is Crestone Peak?

Crestone Peak is located in south-central Colorado, immediately east of the San Luis Valley.

The traditional West Summit lies in Saguache County. The newly recognized highest point on the East Summit sits along the boundary between Saguache and Custer counties, making the true summit the high point of both counties.

The small town of Crestone lies about five miles west of the mountain.

Major neighboring peaks include:

  • Kit Carson Peak
  • Challenger Point
  • Humboldt Peak
  • Columbia Point

Together, these mountains form the Crestone Group, one of the most visually dramatic sections of Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range.

The mountain lies within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, with portions of its slopes administered through the Rio Grande and Pike-San Isabel National Forests.

🏔️ Highest Summit of the Crestone Group

Crestone Peak is the dominant summit of the Crestones.

Modern approximate elevations include:

Crestone Peak is also the highest summit in the northern Sangre de Cristo Range.

Only Blanca Peak, farther south in the range, rises higher.

📏 The 2025 Summit Survey

One of the most interesting developments in modern Colorado mountain measurement occurred on Crestone Peak in 2025.

For decades, the western summit was accepted as the mountain’s highest point.

Modern LiDAR suggested that the neighboring East Summit might be essentially the same height, but the difference was too small to determine confidently using ordinary elevation data.

A rigorous differential-GPS survey was therefore carried out in October 2025.

The results were extraordinary.

Traditional West Summit

The officially named summit measured approximately:

14,299.0 feet

East Summit

The neighboring East Summit measured approximately:

14,299.3 feet

The East Summit was therefore approximately 3.5 inches higher.

That is less than the height of a typical coffee mug.

Yet in mountain geography, even a few inches determine the true natural high point.

🏔️ Which Summit Counts as Crestone Peak?

This creates an unusual situation.

The officially named geographical feature Crestone Peak traditionally refers to the West Summit, while the East Summit is now demonstrably the highest natural rock on the massif.

Colorado fourteener lists are adjusting to this new information.

Historically, climbers who reached the West Summit were considered to have climbed Crestone Peak.

That tradition is unlikely to disappear.

However, hikers interested in standing on the actual highest point should now include the East Summit.

Fortunately, reaching East Crestone from the saddle at the top of the Red Gully involves only a relatively short additional Class 3 scramble.

📈 Prominence and Isolation

The summit-survey result also changes how prominence statistics should be understood.

The traditional West Summit has only about 110 feet of prominence relative to the slightly higher East Summit.

The true East Summit represents the independent Crestone massif and has approximately 4,582 to 4,584 feet of topographic prominence.

Its key saddle is Mosca Pass at approximately 9,716 feet.

The mountain also has approximately 27.4 miles of topographic isolation.

The nearest higher terrain lies toward Blanca Peak.

These measurements make the Crestone massif one of Colorado’s most prominent mountains.

🥾 Climbing Crestone Peak

Crestone Peak is not an ordinary hiking summit.

Its standard route is the South Face via the Red Gully, rated Class 3.

The South Colony Lakes approach is long enough that many climbers choose to backpack and camp near the lakes before attempting the summit.

Even from camp, the route remains a demanding alpine climb.

🚙 South Colony Lakes Trailhead

The standard eastern approach begins near Westcliffe, Colorado.

Drivers use county roads to reach the South Colony Lakes access road.

Two principal starting points are relevant.

Lower 2WD Trailhead

The lower parking area sits near approximately 8,800 feet and can generally be reached by ordinary vehicles when road conditions are good.

Upper 4WD Trailhead

High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles can continue approximately 2.7 miles farther to the official upper trailhead near 9,900 feet.

The upper road is rough and requires suitable clearance.

In 2009, the South Colony Lakes road was permanently closed above this point, so vehicles can no longer drive to the old trailheads near the lakes.

That change added substantial mileage to Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle climbs.

🥾 South Colony Lakes Approach

From the upper trailhead, hikers continue along the old road and trail toward South Colony Lakes.

The approach climbs through forest before entering increasingly dramatic alpine terrain.

Crestone Needle dominates the western skyline.

Before reaching Lower South Colony Lake, climbers turn toward Broken Hand Pass.

The route climbs south and west through increasingly rugged terrain.

Near the upper portion of the pass, hikers encounter loose rock and Class 3 scrambling.

Broken Hand Pass sits near approximately 12,900 feet.

Reaching the pass is already a substantial climb—and Crestone Peak itself still lies on the far side.

🪨 Broken Hand Pass

Broken Hand Pass separates the South Colony Lakes basin from the Cottonwood Lake drainage.

The east side of the pass is steep and loose.

Snow can make this section significantly more dangerous during spring and early summer.

A slip on hard snow may result in a long fall, while melting snow can destabilize loose rocks.

From the pass, climbers descend west toward Cottonwood Lake.

This descent is psychologically difficult for some hikers because every foot lost must eventually be regained on the return trip.

The mountain’s South Face gradually comes into view beyond the lake.

🏞️ Cottonwood Lake Basin

Cottonwood Lake occupies a spectacular basin beneath the Crestones.

From the lake, hikers continue west and then northeast toward the base of the South Face.

The trail climbs through rocky terrain to avoid cliffs beneath the Red Gully.

Near approximately 13,100 feet, climbers reach the beginning of the standard scrambling route.

From here, the character of the climb changes dramatically.

The long approach gives way to sustained Class 3 scrambling.

🔴 The Red Gully

The Red Gully is the defining feature of Crestone Peak’s standard route.

It rises roughly 1,000 vertical feet through the South Face and provides a remarkably direct line toward the summit ridge.

The gully is named for its reddish conglomerate rock.

Water frequently flows through portions of the route, particularly during snowmelt and after rain.

Climbers generally use the rock along the edges rather than scrambling directly through running water.

The lower portion includes smooth slabs and steeper steps.

Higher sections contain more broken rock.

Despite its intimidating appearance, the Crestone conglomerate often provides excellent holds.

🧗 Why the Red Gully Is Class 3

Most of the Red Gully requires hands-on scrambling.

Class 3 means climbers should expect:

  • Frequent use of hands
  • Steep rock
  • Significant fall consequences
  • Route-finding decisions
  • Exposure
  • Sustained scrambling

It is not technical roped climbing under normal dry conditions, but a fall could cause serious injury or death.

The route is considerably more serious when wet, icy, or snow-covered.

Climbers uncomfortable with sustained Class 3 scrambling should develop experience on easier terrain before attempting Crestone Peak.

🪨 Crestone Conglomerate

One reason the Crestones are so famous among Colorado climbers is their unusual rock.

Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle are composed largely of Crestone Conglomerate, a remarkably coarse sedimentary rock.

The formation contains:

  • Boulder-sized rock fragments
  • Cobble-sized clasts
  • Pebbles
  • Arkosic sandstone
  • Smaller quantities of finer sediment

Many fragments are pieces of ancient crystalline rock eroded from the ancestral mountains.

These rounded and angular pieces became naturally cemented together into exceptionally durable conglomerate.

Climbers often describe it as something resembling natural concrete.

🧗 Climbing the Upper Red Gully

Around 13,500 feet, the scrambling becomes somewhat more demanding.

Multiple lines are often possible.

Near 13,600 feet, the gully becomes more broken and filled with larger blocks.

Above approximately 13,800 feet, another reddish pitch leads toward the summit notch.

Climbers eventually reach the top of the Red Gully near 14,150 feet.

This notch separates the traditional West Summit from the newly recognized East Summit.

It is one of the most important decision points on the mountain.

🏔️ Traditional West Summit

From the top of the Red Gully, the traditional route turns west toward the officially named summit.

A short Class 3 scramble across conglomerate ledges leads toward the West Summit.

Exposure becomes more noticeable near the top.

The summit reaches approximately 14,299.0 feet.

For more than a century, this was considered the highest point of Crestone Peak.

The summit remains historically important and provides extraordinary views across the Sangre de Cristo Range.

🆕 East Crestone: The True High Point

From the Red Gully notch, climbers can instead turn east toward the neighboring East Summit.

The scrambling remains approximately Class 3.

The route follows angled conglomerate before working around a rock outcropping near the top.

The summit reaches approximately 14,299.3 feet.

Because the 2025 differential-GPS survey found it about 3.5 inches higher than the West Summit, East Crestone is now the true natural high point of the massif.

Climbers who have the time, weather, and energy may choose to visit both.

The additional distance is short, but no summit extension should be attempted when thunderstorms are building.

🏔️ Northeast Crestone

Another subsidiary summit lies northeast of the main pair.

Northeast Crestone reaches approximately 14,250 feet.

It is considerably more technical than simply crossing between the main East and West summits.

Peak databases generally rate it around Class 4 or easy fifth-class depending on the exact route.

It is therefore not part of the standard Crestone Peak ascent.

Only climbers with appropriate experience should consider adding it.

🧗 Crestone Peak–Crestone Needle Traverse

One of Colorado’s great technical fourteener traverses connects Crestone Peak with Crestone Needle.

The traverse is dramatically more difficult than the standard Red Gully route.

It involves:

  • Sustained scrambling
  • Significant route finding
  • Exposed ledges
  • Class 4 terrain
  • Very high fall consequences

Depending on direction and exact route, some climbers consider sections to approach low fifth-class climbing.

The traverse should never be treated as a casual way to connect two nearby fourteeners.

Climbers should first be comfortable ascending and descending both peaks independently.

🥾 Cottonwood Creek Approach

Crestone Peak can also be approached from the west via Cottonwood Creek, beginning near the town of Crestone.

The route reaches the Cottonwood Lake basin without crossing Broken Hand Pass.

14ers.com estimates a Crestone Peak climb using this approach at roughly:

  • 12 miles round trip
  • 6,000 feet of elevation gain

Recent 2026 climbers have reported longer figures depending on navigation and exact GPS track.

The Cottonwood Creek approach can be beautiful and efficient for climbers coming from the west, but portions of the trail can be less obvious than the South Colony approach.

Route finding is especially challenging in darkness.

🏕️ Camping and Wilderness Regulations

Crestone Peak lies within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness.

Wilderness regulations are intended to protect the area’s remote character and fragile ecosystems.

Visitors should review current Forest Service rules covering:

  • Group size
  • Camping
  • Campfires
  • Human waste
  • Dogs
  • Food storage
  • Distance from lakes and streams

Camping around South Colony Lakes has historically received heavy use.

Choosing durable campsites and following current restrictions helps reduce impacts on vegetation and water quality.

🌎 Geology of Crestone Peak

The geological story of Crestone Peak is one of the most fascinating in Colorado.

Much of the mountain consists of the Crestone Conglomerate Member of the Sangre de Cristo Formation.

The rocks date primarily from the Pennsylvanian through early Permian periods, roughly 300 million years ago.

At that time, Colorado looked nothing like it does today.

The region contained enormous mountains associated with the Ancestral Rocky Mountains.

These ancient ranges shed vast quantities of debris into nearby basins.

🪨 How the Conglomerate Formed

Powerful streams and gravity transported boulders, cobbles, sand, and gravel away from the Ancestral Rockies.

The debris accumulated in thick sedimentary deposits.

Over time, burial and mineral cement transformed the loose material into rock.

The Crestone Conglomerate eventually reached extraordinary thickness.

USGS geological descriptions indicate that portions of the conglomerate sequence may approach 6,000 feet thick.

This helps explain why such enormous walls of similar coarse rock dominate Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle.

🏔️ An Inverted Ancient Basin

There is an interesting geological irony in the Crestones.

The sediments that now form some of the highest and steepest mountains in Colorado were originally deposited in a low basin beside ancient mountains.

Those original Ancestral Rocky Mountains were eventually eroded away.

Later tectonic forces uplifted the former basin sediments.

Erosion then stripped away surrounding material, leaving the resistant conglomerate high above the modern landscape.

A place that once collected debris at low elevation now forms cliffs above 14,000 feet.

🌎 The Modern Sangre de Cristo Range

The current Sangre de Cristo Range is much younger than the rocks of Crestone Peak.

Major uplift occurred during and after the Laramide mountain-building period.

Later faulting associated with the Rio Grande Rift helped create the enormous relief between the Sangres and the San Luis Valley.

The western front of the range rises abruptly above the valley.

Crestone Peak stands approximately 7,000 vertical feet above portions of the San Luis Valley, helping create one of Colorado’s most dramatic mountain walls.

❄️ Ice Age Glaciation

Glaciers further sculpted the Crestone landscape during the Pleistocene.

Ice occupied high basins and mountain valleys.

Moving glaciers carved:

  • Cirques
  • U-shaped valleys
  • Steep headwalls
  • Alpine basins
  • Moraines
  • Lakes

South Colony Lakes and Cottonwood Lake occupy landscapes profoundly influenced by glacial erosion.

When the climate warmed, the glaciers disappeared.

Snowfields still linger seasonally, while frost and flowing water continue breaking down the mountain.

🌲 Flora and Fauna

The Crestone Peak approaches cross an enormous ecological range.

Lower elevations support montane and subalpine forests containing species such as:

  • Aspen
  • Engelmann spruce
  • Subalpine fir
  • Douglas fir in suitable areas
  • Limber pine

As elevation increases toward treeline, trees become shorter and increasingly distorted by wind, snow, and freezing temperatures.

Above treeline, the landscape changes abruptly into alpine tundra and rock.

🌼 Alpine Tundra

The alpine zone supports plants capable of surviving an exceptionally short growing season.

Vegetation may include:

  • Alpine grasses
  • Sedges
  • Alpine avens
  • Cushion plants
  • Mosses
  • Lichens
  • Dwarf wildflowers

Plants remain close to the ground where they receive some shelter from wind.

Snowmelt creates wetter pockets around alpine lakes and streams.

Despite appearing tough enough to withstand almost anything, tundra is extremely vulnerable to trampling.

Climbers should remain on established trails and durable rock wherever practical.

🐿️ Pikas and Marmots

American pikas inhabit rocky talus throughout the Crestone high country.

These small mammals are adapted to cool alpine environments and do not hibernate.

During summer they gather grasses and flowers, storing vegetation beneath rocks for winter.

Yellow-bellied marmots also inhabit rocky slopes and alpine meadows.

Unlike pikas, marmots survive the long winter primarily through hibernation.

Both species are commonly encountered around Colorado’s high mountain basins.

🐏 Bighorn Sheep

Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep inhabit portions of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness.

Their specialized hooves help them negotiate steep rocky terrain similar to the slopes surrounding the Crestones.

Bighorn sheep should always be observed from a distance.

Human disturbance can alter their movement and feeding patterns, particularly around important seasonal habitat.

🦌 Other Wildlife

The larger Sangre de Cristo Wilderness supports wildlife including:

  • Elk
  • Mule deer
  • Black bears
  • Mountain lions
  • Coyotes
  • Snowshoe hares
  • Golden eagles
  • Ravens
  • White-tailed ptarmigan

Large mammals are generally more common below treeline.

The highest portions of Crestone Peak support a much smaller collection of highly specialized alpine species.

📜 Why Is It Called Crestone Peak?

The word crestón comes from Spanish and can carry several related meanings.

Historical mountain-name sources give interpretations including:

  • Large crest
  • Cock’s comb
  • Crest of a helmet
  • Outcropping of ore

The jagged Crestone skyline resembles a large serrated crest when viewed from portions of the San Luis Valley.

During the nineteenth century, the group also appeared under other names.

Early maps and accounts used terms such as:

  • Trois Tetons
  • Three Tetons
  • Spanish Crags
  • Crestone Needles

The modern Crestone terminology eventually became established for both Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle.

🗺️ The “Three Tetons”

Early trappers and traders in the San Luis Valley reportedly compared the jagged Crestone skyline with Wyoming’s famous Tetons.

Wheeler Survey maps from the 1870s labeled portions of the area Trois Tetons, or Three Tetons.

The comparison is understandable.

Like the Tetons, the Crestones form an unusually sharp cluster of dramatic peaks rising abruptly above a broad valley.

Eventually, local Spanish-influenced terminology became dominant and Crestone replaced the Teton comparison.

🥾 First Recorded Ascent

The first documented ascent of Crestone Peak occurred on July 24, 1916.

The party included:

  • Eleanor Davis
  • Albert Ellingwood
  • Joe Deutschbein
  • Frances Rogers

The same era produced several landmark ascents in the Crestone Group.

Eleanor Davis and Albert Ellingwood were among the most accomplished Colorado climbers of their generation.

The rugged Crestones remained unclimbed in the formal mountaineering record much longer than many other Colorado fourteeners because their steep conglomerate walls presented significantly more difficult climbing.

As always, “first recorded ascent” refers to the documented recreational climbing record rather than the entire human history of the landscape.

🌦️ Best Time to Climb Crestone Peak

For most climbers seeking dry-rock conditions, the primary season is July through September.

Snow can fill the Red Gully well into early summer.

When snow-covered, the route becomes a mountaineering climb requiring very different skills.

By midsummer, the conglomerate is usually largely dry.

July and August, however, coincide with Colorado’s afternoon thunderstorm season.

Because the summit route is long and committing, climbers should begin exceptionally early.

🌩️ Lightning Danger

Lightning is one of the greatest warm-season hazards.

Crestone Peak differs from easier fourteeners because climbers cannot simply jog down a hiking trail when thunder develops.

Descending Class 3 terrain takes time.

The route requires:

  • Downclimbing the Red Gully
  • Crossing the Cottonwood basin
  • Re-climbing Broken Hand Pass
  • Descending to South Colony Lakes
  • Completing the long approach

A storm developing while climbers are near the summit can therefore create serious exposure.

An early turnaround is always preferable to becoming trapped above treeline in an electrical storm.

❄️ Snow in the Red Gully

The Red Gully becomes a completely different route when filled with snow.

Recent spring-condition reports have documented:

  • Deep snow
  • Avalanche debris
  • Hard ice
  • Wet avalanche concerns
  • Collapsing snowfields

Under these conditions, ordinary Class 3 scrambling equipment is insufficient.

Climbers may require:

  • Crampons
  • Ice axe
  • Helmet
  • Avalanche equipment
  • Snow-climbing experience

Waiting for summer conditions is often the safer option for climbers whose objective is the standard scrambling route.

🪨 Rockfall

Although the conglomerate is often surprisingly solid, rockfall remains a significant hazard.

Loose rocks accumulate in portions of the Red Gully.

Climbers above can unintentionally dislodge them.

A helmet is strongly recommended.

Parties should avoid climbing directly underneath one another whenever possible.

Rockfall danger becomes especially important on crowded days, after freeze-thaw cycles, and when water is flowing through the gully.

⬇️ Downclimbing

Climbers should remember that almost every scrambling move made on ascent must later be reversed.

The Red Gully can feel more difficult on descent because footholds are harder to see from above.

Fatigue increases the challenge.

Wet rock can make otherwise straightforward moves slippery.

A climber should not ascend any feature they are unwilling or unable to descend safely.

The summit is only halfway through the technical portion of the day.

🌡️ Altitude

Crestone Peak reaches nearly 14,300 feet.

Altitude symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Poor coordination

The long approach adds substantial physical stress before climbers even begin the Red Gully.

Spending a night near South Colony Lakes can help break up the distance, but sleeping around 11,500 feet can itself create altitude problems for visitors arriving from low elevations.

Worsening symptoms require descent.

⚠️ Climbing Safety

Crestone Peak deserves considerably more respect than a standard hiking fourteener.

Important precautions include:

  • Gain Class 3 scrambling experience first.
  • Begin extremely early.
  • Check current route conditions.
  • Carry a helmet.
  • Bring reliable navigation.
  • Expect a long day.
  • Carry sufficient food and water.
  • Bring waterproof and insulating clothing.
  • Watch for altitude illness.
  • Treat running water in the Red Gully cautiously.
  • Avoid climbing directly beneath other parties.
  • Turn around when thunderstorms develop.
  • Understand how snow changes the route.
  • Follow wilderness camping regulations.
  • Protect fragile alpine vegetation.

The mountain rewards preparation and conservative decision-making.

🌄 Views from the Summit

The summit panorama is among the most dramatic in Colorado.

Immediately southeast stands Crestone Needle, whose sharp profile appears almost impossibly close.

Kit Carson Peak and Challenger Point rise to the north.

Humboldt Peak stands across the South Colony Lakes basin.

Westward, the San Luis Valley spreads thousands of feet below the mountain.

Beyond the valley rise other ranges of southwestern Colorado.

Southward views follow the jagged Sangre de Cristo crest toward Blanca Peak.
