The Cordillera Oriental, or Eastern Cordillera, is the easternmost of the three principal branches of the Colombian Andes. Stretching generally southwest to northeast through the heart of Colombia, it contains immense highland plateaus, deeply incised valleys, cloud forests, páramo wetlands, glacial landscapes, and some of the country’s most densely populated mountain regions.

📍 Location
The Cordillera Oriental forms the eastern arm of Colombia’s great Andean mountain system.
It begins in the southern Colombian Andes and trends northeastward through a large section of the country. Its mountain landscapes extend through or influence departments including Huila, Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Santander and Norte de Santander, as well as areas bordering Meta, Casanare and Arauca.

Instead of continuing to accommodate subsidence, ancient basin structures became incorporated into folds, reverse faults and thrust systems.
Uplift accelerated during the Cenozoic, particularly during the Neogene, eventually creating the large mountain barrier visible today.
