The Fitz Roy Range, more precisely known as the Fitz Roy Massif, is a spectacular cluster of steep granite peaks in the southern Andes of Patagonia. Rising immediately west of the Argentine town of El Chaltén, the massif is dominated by Cerro Fitz Roy, or Cerro Chaltén, one of the most recognizable mountains in South America.
The Fitz Roy Massif forms part of the Patagonian Andes near the eastern edge of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. 📍 Location
The Fitz Roy Massif rises in southern Patagonia near 49° south latitude, immediately west of El ChaltĂ©n in Argentina’s Santa Cruz Province.
The mountains stand near the eastern margin of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, one of the world’s largest temperate ice masses. This geographic position places the massif between the wet, heavily glaciated western Andes and the substantially drier Patagonian landscape farther east.

📏 Highest Peak: Cerro Fitz Roy

Aguja Poincenot

Aguja Mermoz

🏔️ Fitz Roy Massif vs. Cerro Torre Massif
One of the most common geographic mistakes involving this part of Patagonia is treating Cerro Torre, Torre Egger, Punta Herron, and Cerro Standhardt as part of the Fitz Roy Range.
They form a neighboring but distinct group generally referred to as the Cerro Torre Massif.
Cerro Torre lies roughly 4.6 kilometers southwest of Fitz Roy. Because the two mountain groups are so close together and are commonly visible within the same panorama, travel publications sometimes combine them under a broad “Fitz Roy Range” label.

🪨 Geology
The extraordinary shape of the Fitz Roy Massif is closely connected to the geology of the Chaltén Plutonic Complex, historically also referred to as the Fitz Roy Plutonic Complex.
Geological research using high-precision uranium-lead dating of zircon crystals indicates that the Chaltén Plutonic Complex was emplaced during the Miocene, roughly 16.9 to 16.4 million years ago.
The complex contains a suite of intrusive igneous rocks ranging in composition from gabbroic rocks to granite.
These rocks originally crystallized from magma below Earth’s surface. Later tectonic uplift and erosion exposed the resistant intrusive rocks.
Glaciers then played an enormous role in sculpting the modern landscape.
Repeated glaciations excavated deep valleys around the resistant rock mass, helping produce the immense cliffs, sharp ridges, cirques, and narrow granite towers for which the Fitz Roy region is famous.

Laguna de los Tres
The best-known hike is Laguna de los Tres, which leads to one of the closest easily accessible viewpoints beneath Fitz Roy.
