Kunyang Chhish is one of the great high mountains of Pakistan’s Karakoram, rising to 7,852 meters (25,761 feet) in the remote Hispar Muztagh of Gilgit-Baltistan. It is generally ranked as the 21st-highest mountain in the world and is the second-highest major summit of the Hispar Muztagh after Distaghil Sar.

Despite its extraordinary elevation, Kunyang Chhish remains much less familiar than Pakistan’s famous 8,000-meter peaks. Its relative obscurity has little to do with a lack of mountaineering difficulty. The mountain is steep, heavily glaciated, remote and notorious for avalanche danger, and successful ascents have been exceptionally rare.

A Polish expedition led by Andrzej Zawada made the first ascent in 1971, following a long route from the south. The climb became an important milestone in the development of Polish high-altitude mountaineering and helped usher in an era in which Polish climbers became famous for difficult expeditions throughout the Himalayas and Karakoram.

📍 Where Is Kunyang Chhish?

Kunyang Chhish rises in Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan, on the northern side of the enormous Hispar Glacier. It belongs to the Hispar Muztagh, one of the principal subdivisions of the Karakoram.

The region contains an extraordinary concentration of mountains above 7,000 meters. Distaghil Sar, the highest summit of the Hispar Muztagh, rises to the north. Pumari Chhish stands nearby to the east, while Kanjut Sar and Yukshin Gardan Sar form part of another remarkable cluster of high peaks farther east.

Kunyang Chhish towers above a landscape almost entirely shaped by rock, snow and ice. Long glaciers extend between the surrounding mountains, while deeply carved valleys provide the principal approaches into the region.

Its isolation is one of the reasons relatively few climbers have attempted the peak. Reaching base camp requires a substantial expedition before the serious climbing even begins.

🏔️ The Hispar Muztagh

The Hispar Muztagh occupies part of the northwestern central Karakoram and contains some of the highest mountains on Earth outside the group of 8,000-meter peaks.

Distaghil Sar reaches approximately 7,885 meters and is the highest mountain of the subrange. Kunyang Chhish follows closely behind at 7,852 meters. Other major Hispar Muztagh peaks include Kanjut Sar, Pumari Chhish, Trivor and Yukshin Gardan Sar.

The Hispar Glacier dominates the southern side of much of the range. Combined with the Biafo Glacier across Hispar Pass, it forms one of the great glacier corridors of the Karakoram.

Unlike the heavily visited Baltoro region surrounding K2 and Broad Peak, much of the Hispar Muztagh remains comparatively quiet. Expeditions tend to be small and specialized, and many major walls, ridges and subsidiary summits have received remarkably little climbing attention.

📏 Elevation, Prominence and Isolation

Kunyang Chhish has a commonly accepted elevation of 7,852 meters (25,761 feet). Some older sources and surveys provide slightly different figures, but 7,852 meters is widely used in modern mountaineering records.

The mountain has 1,765 meters (5,791 feet) of topographic prominence. Because this exceeds the commonly used 1,500-meter threshold, Kunyang Chhish qualifies as an ultra-prominent peak.

Its true topographic isolation is approximately 13.52 kilometers (8.4 miles). The nearest higher terrain lies toward Distaghil Sar, which rises only slightly higher but is separated from Kunyang Chhish by substantial glaciated terrain.

The combination of enormous elevation and substantial prominence confirms that Kunyang Chhish is a major independent mountain rather than simply a high subsidiary summit in the Hispar massif.

📛 What Does Kunyang Chhish Mean?

The mountain appears under several spellings, including Kunyang Chhish, Khunyang Chhish, Kunyang Kish and Khinyang Chhish.

Members of the 1971 Polish expedition were told locally that the name meant “the corner peak,” a description that fits the mountain’s angular appearance when seen from the Hispar region.

Other historical mountaineering accounts have offered different interpretations of the name. The variations reflect the difficulty of transliterating local mountain names into European languages and alphabets.

For consistency, Kunyang Chhish is a useful modern English spelling, although Khunyang Chhish remains common in mountaineering literature.

🏔️ The Kunyang Chhish Massif

Kunyang Chhish is more than a single isolated point. The surrounding massif includes several extremely high subsidiary summits.

The main summit, at 7,852 meters, is the highest point and the mountain normally meant when the name Kunyang Chhish is used without qualification.

Kunyang Chhish East, approximately 7,400 meters high, is one of the most famous subsidiary peaks. It remained unclimbed until 2013 despite attempts by several exceptionally strong teams.

A western summit and a northern summit also form part of the broader mountain complex. Kunyang Chhish North was first climbed by a Japanese expedition in 1979.

This collection of summits, ridges and enormous faces makes the massif particularly complicated. Climbing one subsidiary summit can itself involve an expedition comparable in seriousness to climbing a major independent mountain elsewhere.

🪨 Geology

Kunyang Chhish is part of the vast mountain belt created by the continuing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The Karakoram contains some of the most extreme relief on Earth. Tectonic forces continue to lift the mountains while glaciers, rivers, avalanches and rockfall rapidly erode them.

Around Kunyang Chhish, these competing processes have produced steep ridges, towering walls and heavily glaciated valleys. High elevations remain covered by permanent snow and ice, while exposed ridges display hard crystalline rock shaped by frost and gravity.

Freeze-thaw cycles are especially important. Water enters cracks in the mountain, freezes and expands, gradually breaking rock away from the faces. Rockfall can therefore become an important climbing hazard, particularly when strong sunlight warms exposed slopes.

Glaciers carry enormous quantities of this eroded material away from the mountain, creating the moraines and debris-covered ice that characterize the Hispar region.

🧗 Early Attempts

Kunyang Chhish began attracting serious mountaineering expeditions during the 1960s.

A joint British-Pakistani expedition attempted the mountain in 1962 but did not reach the summit. The expedition encountered the enormous scale and complexity that would become characteristic of later attempts.

A Japanese expedition followed in 1965, again attempting the mountain from the south. This expedition also ended without success and suffered a fatal accident.

By the end of the decade, Kunyang Chhish had established a formidable reputation. Its routes were long, avalanche-prone and difficult to protect, while its remote position made supplying high camps a major logistical challenge.

It would take a particularly determined Polish expedition to finally reach the summit.

🇵🇱 The 1971 Polish Expedition

The successful expedition was organized under the leadership of Andrzej Zawada, one of the most important figures in the history of Polish high-altitude climbing.

A large team traveled to Pakistan in 1971 and established itself beneath the southern side of Kunyang Chhish. Their route climbed directly from the Pumari Chhish Glacier toward the mountain’s south face and then gained the long south ridge.

The climb demanded a traditional siege-style approach, with camps and supplies progressively established higher on the mountain.

The expedition also suffered tragedy. Jan Franczuk died after falling into a crevasse above Camp III.

Despite the loss and considerable technical difficulties, the team continued.

🏆 First Ascent

On August 26, 1971, Andrzej Zawada, Andrzej Heinrich, Jan Stryczynski and Ryszard Szafirski reached the summit of Kunyang Chhish.

Their final climb was far from straightforward. The climbers followed the south ridge toward the summit and were forced to endure an uncomfortable bivouac only a short distance below the top.

The successful ascent represented far more than another first ascent of a major Karakoram mountain. It became an important moment in Polish mountaineering history.

Over the following decades, Polish climbers would achieve some of the greatest high-altitude ascents ever made, including pioneering winter climbs and difficult new routes throughout the Himalayas and Karakoram. Kunyang Chhish helped demonstrate that Polish expeditions possessed the technical skill, organization and determination required for the world’s most difficult high mountains.

🧗 Attempts From the North

After the success of the south-ridge route, climbers began looking toward the mountain’s formidable northern side.

British expeditions in 1980 and 1981 attempted a route involving the northwest spur and north ridge. Climbers succeeded in reaching the high north ridge but were repeatedly defeated by poor weather and enormous amounts of snow.

During the 1981 attempt, a team reached approximately 6,900 meters after climbing the northwest spur. Heavy snowfall trapped the climbers in a snow-hole camp for days and ultimately prevented a summit attempt.

A Japanese expedition attempted the northern side in 1987 but ended tragically when a member was killed in an avalanche.

These attempts demonstrated that the north ridge offered a viable but extremely demanding alternative to the original Polish route.

🏆 The Second Ascent

Kunyang Chhish was finally climbed for a second time in 1988, 17 years after the Polish first ascent.

A British expedition approached from the north and climbed the enormous northwest spur, gaining the north ridge high on the mountain.

The route required several camps. Technical climbing was generally moderate by extreme Karakoram standards, but sections of ice reached approximately 70 degrees, and the climbers also encountered a difficult bergschrund near the summit.

Mark Lowe and Keith Milne made the summit push in July 1988, completing the second ascent of Kunyang Chhish and the first successful ascent by the northwest spur and north ridge.

The long interval between the first and second successful climbs illustrates just how difficult the mountain is. Kunyang Chhish has never developed the repeated climbing traffic seen on many better-known high peaks.

🧗 The South Ridge Revisited

The original 1971 south ridge has itself remained an exceptionally serious route.

In 2006, a Japanese expedition led by veteran mountaineer Kazuo Tobita attempted to repeat the route. Tobita had studied Kunyang Chhish for years and had previously explored several potential lines on the massif.

The climbers established an upper base camp at approximately 4,800 meters and a first high camp around 5,600 meters. They reached approximately 5,900 meters before deteriorating weather and severe avalanche danger forced them to abandon the climb.

Cornices on the ridge presented a particularly serious hazard. A collapsing cornice could trigger an avalanche across slopes below, making conditions too dangerous for continued progress.

The failure to repeat the original route decades after the first ascent underscores the difficulty of Kunyang Chhish even for highly experienced Himalayan climbers.

🧗 Kunyang Chhish East

Kunyang Chhish East rises to approximately 7,400 meters and became one of the great unclimbed challenges of the Karakoram during the early twenty-first century.

Its enormous southwest face rises roughly 2,700 meters, presenting a sustained technical climb at extreme altitude.

American climbers Steve House and Vince Anderson made a major attempt in 2006. They climbed the southwest face and reached the upper ridge but were stopped by a difficult rock step only a few hundred vertical meters below the summit.

The mountain remained unclimbed for several more years.

In 2013, Austrian brothers Hansjörg and Matthias Auer joined Swiss climber Simon Anthamatten for another attempt. After being turned back by storms and avalanche conditions during earlier tries, the trio began another push in July.

They spent several days climbing the southwest face and were eventually forced to shelter from high winds and spindrift in a crevasse.

On July 18, 2013, the three climbers finally reached the summit, completing the first ascent of Kunyang Chhish East.

The ascent became one of the notable modern achievements in lightweight technical Karakoram climbing.

❄️ Glaciers Around Kunyang Chhish

Glaciers dominate virtually every approach to Kunyang Chhish.

The Hispar Glacier forms the major ice corridor south of the massif. Numerous smaller tributary glaciers descend from the surrounding mountains and eventually feed the larger glacial system.

The Kunyang Glacier provides access to parts of the main massif, while other glaciers separate Kunyang Chhish from Distaghil Sar and Pumari Chhish.

For climbers, these glaciers create both transportation routes and major hazards. Hidden crevasses may be covered by fragile snow bridges, while seracs can collapse without warning.

Changes in temperature can alter glacier travel substantially even during the course of a single day. Cold early-morning conditions may provide relatively stable snow bridges, while afternoon warming can weaken them.

⚠️ Why Is Kunyang Chhish So Difficult?

Kunyang Chhish combines nearly every difficulty associated with serious Karakoram mountaineering.

The approach is long and remote. Once climbers reach the mountain, they face huge glaciers, avalanche-prone slopes, unstable cornices and steep snow-and-ice terrain.

Routes are also exceptionally long. The northwest spur used during the second ascent rises for more than 2,000 vertical meters before climbers even gain the upper north ridge.

At 7,852 meters, altitude becomes another severe problem. The human body progressively deteriorates at these elevations, making even relatively moderate technical climbing exhausting.

Weather can change rapidly. Heavy snowfall may increase avalanche danger so dramatically that an expedition must retreat despite weeks of preparation.

Finally, rescue options are extremely limited. Teams attempting Kunyang Chhish must be capable of handling most emergencies themselves in a remote environment where outside assistance may be difficult or impossible to obtain quickly.

🌦️ Climate and Weather

Summer is the principal climbing season in the Hispar Muztagh, but favorable weather is never guaranteed.

Storms can deposit large amounts of snow on Kunyang Chhish, creating dangerous avalanche conditions on its steep slopes. Strong winds scour ridges while simultaneously building unstable cornices along their sheltered sides.

Temperatures remain well below freezing at upper elevations even during summer. Wind chill can make conditions considerably colder.

Periods of sunshine bring their own dangers. Solar warming can loosen snow, destabilize ice and increase rockfall on exposed faces.

The mountain’s climbing history repeatedly demonstrates the importance of weather. Several strong expeditions have been forced to retreat not because they lacked the technical ability to continue but because accumulated snow made the route unacceptably dangerous.

🌱 Flora and Fauna

The upper slopes of Kunyang Chhish are too high to support vegetation. Above the snowline, the environment consists almost entirely of glacier ice, permanent snow and exposed rock.

Vegetation becomes more noticeable at lower elevations along the approach valleys. Hardy grasses, alpine flowers and shrubs survive during the short summer season, particularly in sheltered locations with sufficient moisture.

Wildlife in the wider Karakoram may include Himalayan ibex, blue sheep, marmots, red foxes and Himalayan wolves. The broader region also lies within the range of the snow leopard, although sightings of this elusive predator are uncommon.

Large mountain birds such as golden eagles and bearded vultures may be seen using rising air currents along the surrounding ridges.

These species survive in an environment characterized by cold winters, thin soils, limited vegetation and enormous seasonal variations in food availability.
