Mount Humphreys is a high summit in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains, one of Africa’s most unusual and spectacular mountain ranges. Rising to approximately 4,578 meters (15,020 feet), the peak lies within the high Rwenzori landscape of western Uganda and inside Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Unlike the volcanic mountains that dominate many parts of East Africa, the Rwenzoris are primarily an uplifted block of ancient crystalline rock associated with the western branch of the East African Rift. Mount Humphreys is therefore part of a rugged landscape shaped by tectonic uplift, faulting, erosion, and past glaciation rather than volcanic eruptions.

Although considerably lower than Mount Stanley, the highest mountain in the Rwenzoris, Mount Humphreys still rises well into the Afro-alpine zone and is surrounded by some of Uganda’s most extraordinary high-altitude scenery.

Mount Humphreys reaches approximately 4,578 meters (15,020 feet) above sea level in the Rwenzori Mountains of western Uganda.

The peak is part of a densely packed collection of high summits that includes Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Mount Gessi, Mount Luigi di Savoia, Weismanns Peak, and several lesser-known summits.

The Rwenzoris are often called the “Mountains of the Moon,” a historic name associated with ancient ideas about the mysterious mountains near the headwaters of the Nile.

Today, much of the Ugandan side of the high range is protected within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its dramatic scenery, unusual vegetation, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, and biodiversity.

One of the most important facts about Mount Humphreys is that it is not a volcano.

Modern glaciers survive primarily around the very highest parts of the Rwenzoris, particularly Mount Stanley, although their extent has decreased substantially.

Mount Humphreys itself should not be confused with the major currently glaciated summits simply because it rises above 4,500 meters.

Uganda Wildlife Authority reports more than 70 mammal species and more than 200 bird species within the wider park, including numerous species associated with the Albertine Rift.

Wildlife ranges from primates and small mammals in lower forests to specialized birds and mammals inhabiting higher elevations.

One important clarification is that mountain gorillas are not a characteristic species of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Uganda’s wild mountain gorillas occur primarily in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, not on Mount Humphreys. Older descriptions sometimes incorrectly associate mountain gorillas with the Rwenzoris simply because all of these mountain areas are in western Uganda.

Mount Humphreys is not one of the standard tourist summits normally advertised to visitors trekking in the Rwenzoris.

Most organized high-altitude trips concentrate on established routes through the national park and, for technical climbers, on Margherita Peak of Mount Stanley.

The two broad trekking systems associated with the Rwenzoris are commonly centered on approaches through the Central Circuit area and the southern Kilembe side of the range.

Reaching more obscure high summits such as Mount Humphreys may require:

  • Specialized local route knowledge
  • Off-main-route travel
  • Strong navigation skills
  • High-altitude experience
  • Technical scrambling or climbing depending on the objective
