🌿 Flora & Fauna

One of Mount Lafayette’s most distinctive ecological characteristics is its transition from dense northern forest to exposed alpine habitat.

Lower elevations support the forests typical of northern New England. As elevation increases and conditions become colder, windier, and more severe, spruce and fir become increasingly important.

Near treeline, trees become shorter and distorted by persistent wind, ice, snow, and cold temperatures. This dense, stunted vegetation is commonly called krummholz.

Above treeline, Mount Lafayette enters the alpine zone.

The path climbs approximately 2.9 miles from the trailhead to AMC’s Greenleaf Hut, gaining about 2,500 feet along the way.

Greenleaf Hut stands at approximately 4,220 feet below Lafayette.

From the hut, hikers continue on the Greenleaf Trail for approximately another mile toward the exposed summit.

Greenleaf Trail

Another approach uses the Greenleaf Trail beginning near the Cannon Mountain area.

Skookumchuck Trail

The Skookumchuck Trail provides a quieter northern approach.

Appalachian Trail

Regardless of route, Lafayette should be considered a strenuous mountain.

Hikers should expect:

Early Fall

Winter

Mount Lafayette is a serious winter mountain.
