Japan is an island nation shaped by mountains. From the snowy ranges of Hokkaido to the volcanic landscapes of Kyushu, mountains form the backbone of the Japanese archipelago and have influenced the country’s climate, wildlife, settlement patterns, religions, art, and outdoor traditions.

The most famous is Mount Fuji, an almost perfectly symmetrical volcano rising above central Honshu. At 3,776 meters (12,388 feet), it is the highest mountain in Japan and one of the most recognizable peaks in the world.

Yet Japan’s mountain geography extends far beyond Fuji. The rugged Japanese Alps contain sharp ridgelines, glacial landforms, deep valleys, alpine meadows, mountain huts, and nearly all the country’s highest non-volcanic summits. Elsewhere, active volcanoes, forested pilgrimage mountains, remote island peaks, and snow-covered northern ranges reveal the remarkable variety of Japan’s highlands.

🏔️ Overview

Japan lies along a geologically active island arc on the northwestern edge of the Pacific Ocean. Its mountainous terrain has developed through a combination of tectonic uplift, faulting, folding, erosion, and volcanic activity.

Mountain ranges stretch across all four of Japan’s principal islands:

  • Honshu contains Mount Fuji, the Japanese Alps, the Ōu Mountains, the Echigo Mountains, and many volcanic groups.
  • Hokkaido contains the Daisetsuzan, Hidaka, Yūbari, Kitami, and Shiretoko ranges.
  • Shikoku is crossed by the Shikoku Mountains, including Mount Ishizuchi.
  • Kyushu contains volcanic mountains such as Mount Aso, the Kirishima Mountains, Mount Kuju, and Mount Unzen.

Japan’s mountains are not exceptionally high by Asian standards. The country has no 4,000-meter peaks, and Mount Fuji is much lower than the great summits of the Himalayas and Karakoram. What Japan lacks in extreme elevation, however, it makes up for in steep relief, complex geology, heavy snowfall, volcanic activity, biodiversity, cultural importance, and accessible mountain adventures.

Japan’s official mountain elevations are maintained by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, which periodically updates its national list to reflect improved measurements, tectonic movement, and physical changes to summits.

⛰️ The Ten Highest Mountains in Japan

The following table is based on the March 31, 2026 edition of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan’s official list of principal mountain elevations.

The list treats separately named summits and major subpeaks as individual entries. Consequently, peaks such as Karasawa-dake, Kita-Hotaka-dake, and Ōbami-dake appear in the national top ten even though they belong to larger mountain groups.

Mount Fuji stands almost 600 meters above Kita-dake, creating an unusually large elevation gap between a country’s first- and second-highest mountains.

There is also a tie for third place. Both Oku-Hotaka-dake and Aino-dake are officially listed at 3,190 meters. Some older sources give Aino-dake an elevation of 3,189 meters, but the current official Japanese figure is 3,190 meters.

1. Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji, or Fujisan, is Japan’s highest mountain and most enduring natural symbol. Its summit reaches 3,776 meters on the boundary between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures.

Fuji is an active stratovolcano built from repeated layers of lava, ash, and other volcanic material. Its symmetrical cone rises dramatically above surrounding lowlands and can be seen from Tokyo on exceptionally clear days.

The mountain has been a destination for pilgrims for centuries. Shrines, pilgrimage routes, lakes, lava formations, and historic lodging sites associated with Fuji were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 under the title Fujisan, Sacred Place and Source of Artistic Inspiration.

Fuji’s official summit is Kengamine, located on the rim of the volcanic crater. Several other high points surround the crater, and climbers can complete the circular Ohachi-meguri route when conditions permit.

2. Kita-dake

At 3,193 meters, Kita-dake is Japan’s second-highest mountain and its highest non-volcanic summit.

It rises in the Akaishi Mountains, commonly called the Southern Japanese Alps, within Minami Alps National Park. Although it receives fewer international visitors than Mount Fuji, Kita-dake is one of Japan’s classic high-mountain destinations.

The mountain is frequently climbed as part of a traverse connecting Kita-dake with Aino-dake and Nōtori-dake. Together, these summits form the Shirane Sanzan, or Three Mountains of Shirane.

Kita-dake is also known for rare alpine plants, exposed ridges, extensive views, and steep approaches from the Hirogawara area.

3. Oku-Hotaka-dake

Oku-Hotaka-dake is the highest summit of the Hotaka mountain group and the highest mountain in the Northern Japanese Alps.

Its rocky summit reaches 3,190 meters along the boundary between Nagano and Gifu prefectures. The surrounding Hotaka massif contains some of Japan’s steepest and most dramatic alpine terrain.

Popular approaches begin near Kamikōchi and pass through the Karasawa Cirque or climb from the west through the Shinhotaka area. Some ridges around the Hotaka group involve serious scrambling, exposure, chains, ladders, loose rock, and rapidly changing weather.

Oku-Hotaka should not be confused with nearby Kita-Hotaka-dake, Mae-Hotaka-dake, or Nishi-Hotaka-dake, all of which are separate summits within the larger Hotaka group.

3. Aino-dake

Tied with Oku-Hotaka-dake at 3,190 meters, Aino-dake is one of the highest summits of the Southern Alps.

Its broad summit stands between Kita-dake and Nōtori-dake. Many hikers reach it during a multi-day traverse rather than as an isolated climb.

Compared with the sharp rock architecture of the Northern Alps, Aino-dake has a more expansive, rolling high-mountain profile. Nevertheless, its elevation, exposure, long approach, and unpredictable weather make it a serious alpine destination.

5. Mount Yari

Mount Yari, or Yari-ga-take, rises to 3,180 meters in the Northern Alps. Its narrow, spear-shaped summit tower makes it one of Japan’s most recognizable mountains.

“Yari” means spear, an appropriate name for the summit pinnacle. The final climb usually involves steep rock, metal ladders, chains, and exposed terrain.

Mount Yari occupies an important position in Japanese mountaineering history and is approached by several long-distance routes. Some hikers combine it with a traverse toward the Hotaka Mountains, although the most difficult connecting ridges are suitable only for experienced climbers.

6. Higashi-dake — Warusawa-dake

Higashi-dake, better known to many hikers as Warusawa-dake, reaches 3,141 meters in the Southern Alps.

The mountain belongs to the Arakawa group and is one of the more remote high summits in central Honshu. Reaching it generally requires a long approach and a multi-day itinerary.

Warusawa-dake is often traversed with Arakawa Naka-dake, Arakawa Mae-dake, and Akaishi-dake. The region is known for expansive alpine terrain, deep forests, long ridgelines, and fewer visitors than many famous Northern Alps routes.

7. Akaishi-dake

At 3,121 meters, Akaishi-dake is one of the principal summits of the Southern Japanese Alps.

The mountain’s name means “red stone mountain,” referring to the reddish rocks found in parts of the area. The name Akaishi Mountains was later applied to the wider mountain range.

Akaishi-dake is remote and typically included in a multi-day traverse. The journey passes through extensive forests before reaching the open alpine zone, where hikers encounter broad ridges and panoramic views across central Honshu.

8. Karasawa-dake

Karasawa-dake is a 3,110-meter summit in the Hotaka group of the Northern Alps.

It rises close to Oku-Hotaka-dake and Kita-Hotaka-dake above the famous Karasawa Cirque. Despite its elevation, Karasawa-dake is less widely recognized outside Japanese climbing circles because it forms part of a larger cluster of exceptionally high peaks.

The surrounding ridge terrain is rocky and exposed. Hikers should not assume that proximity to popular trails makes the summit straightforward.

9. Kita-Hotaka-dake

Kita-Hotaka-dake reaches 3,106 meters at the northern end of the main Hotaka ridgeline.

The mountain overlooks the Karasawa Cirque and the steep Daikiretto gap separating the Hotaka group from the route toward Mount Yari. Kita-Hotaka has one of Japan’s best-known high mountain huts, situated close to the summit.

Routes involving the Daikiretto are among the most serious marked alpine traverses in Japan, requiring confidence on exposed rock, stable weather, good judgment, and substantial mountain experience.

10. Ōbami-dake

Ōbami-dake rises to 3,101 meters immediately south of Mount Yari.

Its position near the much more distinctive Yari-ga-take means it is sometimes overlooked, but it is officially one of Japan’s ten highest summits.

Ōbami-dake is commonly crossed during traverses along the main Northern Alps ridgeline. It is followed closely in elevation by Mae-Hotaka-dake, which reaches 3,090 meters.

🗻 The Japanese Alps

The name Japanese Alps refers to three major mountain ranges in central Honshu. The term was popularized internationally during the development of modern mountaineering in Japan.

The three divisions are:

  1. Hida Mountains — Northern Alps
  2. Kiso Mountains — Central Alps
  3. Akaishi Mountains — Southern Alps

Each has a different landscape and hiking character.

Hida Mountains — Northern Alps

The Hida Mountains contain many of Japan’s most dramatic peaks, including:

  • Oku-Hotaka-dake
  • Mount Yari
  • Karasawa-dake
  • Kita-Hotaka-dake
  • Ōbami-dake
  • Tateyama
  • Tsurugi-dake
  • Shirouma-dake
  • Norikura-dake

The Northern Alps are noted for sharp granite ridges, cirques, steep valleys, heavy winter snowfall, lingering snowfields, and an extensive mountain-hut network.

Kamikōchi is one of the region’s principal gateways. Located in the Azusa River valley, it provides access to the Hotaka Mountains, Mount Yari, and numerous multi-day routes.

Other important gateways include Hakuba, Murodō, Shinhotaka, and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

The Northern Alps lie largely within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park, one of Japan’s premier mountain protected areas.

Kiso Mountains — Central Alps

The Kiso Mountains form the smallest of the three Japanese Alps ranges.

Their highest summit is Kiso-Komagatake, which reaches 2,956 meters. Other prominent peaks include Hōken-dake, Utsugi-dake, and Minami-Komagatake.

The Senjōjiki Cirque is one of the best-known landscapes in the Central Alps. A ropeway carries visitors high into the mountains, making alpine scenery accessible without a full valley-to-summit climb.

The apparent ease of access can be misleading. Weather changes quickly, snow may remain into summer, and trails above the ropeway include steep and exposed terrain.

Akaishi Mountains — Southern Alps

The Akaishi Mountains contain many of Japan’s highest summits, including:

  • Kita-dake
  • Aino-dake
  • Warusawa-dake
  • Akaishi-dake
  • Shiomi-dake
  • Senjōgatake
  • Nōtori-dake

Compared with the Northern Alps, the Southern Alps generally have longer approaches, broader ridges, deeper forests, and fewer convenient access points.

The range contains some of Japan’s most extensive continuous high-mountain terrain. Many routes require several days and rely on mountain huts or designated campsites.

Much of the range is protected within Minami Alps National Park.

🌋 Volcanoes of Japan

Volcanic mountains are among the defining features of Japan’s geography.

Japan sits in a convergent tectonic region where oceanic plates descend beneath parts of the Eurasian continental margin and adjoining island arcs. This process generates magma, earthquakes, uplift, and chains of volcanoes.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recognizes 111 active volcanoes in the country. In the Japanese system, an active volcano is generally one that has erupted during approximately the past 10,000 years or continues to display significant fumarolic activity.

Mount Fuji

Japan’s highest mountain is also an active stratovolcano. Its most recent confirmed eruption was the Hōei eruption of 1707–1708.

Mount Aso

Located in Kyushu, Mount Aso is a vast volcanic complex containing one of the world’s best-known caldera landscapes. The active Nakadake crater may be subject to access restrictions.

Sakurajima

Sakurajima rises beside the city of Kagoshima and is one of Japan’s most persistently active volcanoes. Eruptions and ash emissions are recurring features of the region.

Mount Unzen

Mount Unzen is a volcanic group on the Shimabara Peninsula in Kyushu. Its 1990–1995 eruption produced dangerous pyroclastic flows and formed the lava dome known as Heisei Shinzan.

Mount Ontake

Mount Ontake is Japan’s second-highest volcano after Mount Fuji. Its unexpected eruption on September 27, 2014, caused one of the country’s deadliest modern volcanic disasters.

Asahidake

At 2,291 meters, Asahidake is the highest mountain in Hokkaido. It forms part of the Daisetsuzan volcanic group and remains volcanically active.

Mount Yake

Mount Yake rises near Kamikōchi in the Northern Alps. It is an active volcano surrounded by popular hiking destinations.

Kirishima Mountains

This volcanic group in southern Kyushu includes Karakuni-dake, Shinmoedake, and Takachiho-no-mine. The region combines active volcanic landscapes with historic pilgrimage traditions.

🗾 Mountains by Island and Region

Japan’s mountains vary considerably from north to south.

Mountains of Hokkaido

Hokkaido has lower elevations than central Honshu but experiences severe winters, deep snow, powerful winds, and extensive wilderness.

Major mountain regions include:

  • Daisetsuzan
  • Hidaka Mountains
  • Shiretoko Range
  • Yūbari Mountains
  • Kitami Mountains
  • Akan volcanic region

Important peaks include Asahidake, Mount Tokachi, Mount Rausu, Mount Meakan, Mount Yōtei, and Mount Rishiri.

Daisetsuzan is sometimes called the “roof of Hokkaido.” Its broad volcanic uplands support alpine plants, brown bears, red foxes, pika, and extensive autumn foliage.

The Hidaka Mountains are sharper and more remote, with difficult approaches and limited infrastructure.

Mountains of Tohoku

Northern Honshu is dominated by the Ōu Mountains, a long mountain chain extending through the Tohoku region.

Notable mountains include:

  • Mount Hachimantai
  • Mount Akita-Komagatake
  • Mount Chōkai
  • Mount Gassan
  • Mount Zaō
  • Mount Bandai
  • Mount Adatara

Many are volcanic. The region is known for heavy snowfall, hot springs, beech forests, ski areas, pilgrimage routes, and autumn colors.

Mountains Around Tokyo

Several mountain areas can be reached from Tokyo by public transportation.

Popular destinations include:

  • Mount Takao
  • Mount Mitake
  • Mount Ōdake
  • Mount Tsukuba
  • Mount Tanzawa
  • Mount Jinba
  • Mount Kumotori

At 2,017 meters, Mount Kumotori is the highest mountain in Tokyo Metropolis, although its summit lies on the border with Saitama and Yamanashi prefectures.

These mountains do not offer the elevation of the Japanese Alps, but they provide excellent opportunities for day hiking, forest walks, temple visits, ridge traverses, and views toward Mount Fuji.

Mountains of Kansai

The Kansai region contains many culturally important mountains.

Mount Hiei, northeast of Kyoto, is associated with the Enryaku-ji temple complex and the Tendai school of Buddhism.

Mount Kōya, or Kōyasan, is a sacred Buddhist center surrounded by forested mountains in Wakayama Prefecture.

The Kii Mountains contain the Kumano pilgrimage landscape, including sections of the Kumano Kodō trail network.

Other destinations include Mount Rokko near Kobe, Mount Ibuki, Mount Ōmine, and the mountains of Yoshino.

Mountains of Shikoku

The Shikoku Mountains extend across much of the island’s interior.

Their highest summit is Mount Ishizuchi, which reaches 1,982 meters. Ishizuchi is known for sacred traditions, steep chains, rocky summit terrain, and extensive views.

Other important Shikoku mountains include Mount Tsurugi, Miune, Sasagamine, and Mount Kamegamori.

The island’s mountains also form the setting for many stages of the Shikoku Pilgrimage.

Mountains of Kyushu

Kyushu is particularly notable for volcanic landscapes.

Major mountains and volcanic regions include:

  • Mount Aso
  • Kuju Mountains
  • Kirishima Mountains
  • Mount Unzen
  • Mount Sobo
  • Mount Kaimon
  • Mount Tsurumi
  • Mount Yufu
  • Sakurajima

The highest point on Kyushu is Nakadake in the Kuju Mountains, at 1,791 meters.

Kyushu’s mountains combine grasslands, volcanic craters, hot springs, pilgrimage sites, forests, and views across densely settled valleys.

Mountains of the Southern Islands

Japan’s smaller southern islands contain distinctive subtropical mountain environments.

On Yakushima, Miyanoura-dake rises to 1,936 meters. The island is known for ancient cedar forests, exceptionally heavy rainfall, steep granite mountains, and ecosystems ranging from subtropical forest to cool highland vegetation.

The Ryukyu Islands contain lower forested mountains with high levels of endemic biodiversity. Conditions can be hot, humid, wet, and affected by typhoons.

⛩️ Sacred Mountains and Shugendō

Mountains have held spiritual importance in Japan for centuries.

In Shinto traditions, mountains may be regarded as dwelling places of kami, or sacred presences. In Buddhism, isolated peaks and forests became places for meditation, training, pilgrimage, and temple construction.

Shugendō developed as an ascetic mountain tradition combining elements of esoteric Buddhism, Shinto beliefs, folk practices, and physical discipline. Practitioners known as yamabushi trained in rugged mountain landscapes.

🌿 Plants and Wildlife

Japan’s mountain ecosystems range from subtropical forests to alpine tundra.

Lower slopes may support cedar, cypress, oak, maple, beech, and bamboo-grass communities. Higher elevations transition into coniferous forests, dwarf pine, alpine meadows, wind-shaped vegetation, and exposed rock.

Notable mountain wildlife includes:

  • Ussuri brown bear in Hokkaido

The Japanese rock ptarmigan, known as raichō, is especially associated with the high mountains of central Honshu. It survives in isolated alpine habitats above the treeline and is considered a symbol of the Japanese Alps.

Alpine plants often bloom during the brief summer season. Their survival depends on cold temperatures, deep winter snow, limited competition, and delicate high-elevation habitats.

Climate change, browsing by expanding deer populations, trail erosion, introduced species, and increased visitor pressure all create conservation challenges.

Japan offers mountain experiences ranging from short temple walks to demanding multi-day alpine traverses.

Many trails are well marked, but this should not be mistaken for an absence of risk. High mountains can involve steep snowfields, ladders, chains, loose rock, exposed ridges, typhoons, lightning, volcanic hazards, bears, and sudden temperature changes.

Mountain Huts

Japan has an extensive system of mountain huts, particularly in the Japanese Alps.

Depending on the location, huts may provide:

  • Sleeping space
  • Meals
  • Drinking water
  • Toilets
  • Basic emergency shelter
  • Weather information
  • Campsite management

Some require advance reservations, while operating dates vary by elevation and region. Facilities are usually practical rather than luxurious, and sleeping areas may be shared.

Huts make multi-day travel more accessible, but hikers should still carry sufficient clothing, water, food, navigation equipment, and emergency supplies.

Chains and Ladders

Fixed chains and ladders are found on many Japanese mountain routes. Their presence does not necessarily mean the route is suitable for beginners.

They may cross:

  • Near-vertical rock
  • Narrow ledges
  • Exposed ridges
  • Loose gullies
  • Wet slabs
  • Snow-covered sections

Hikers uncomfortable with exposure should research individual trails carefully rather than relying solely on distance and elevation statistics.

Trail Grades

Japan does not have one universal trail-grading system covering every mountain. Individual prefectures, parks, guidebooks, mapping services, and hiking organizations may use different classifications.

A route described simply as “hiking” may involve terrain that would be classified as scrambling or alpine travel elsewhere.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit Japan’s Mountains

The best season depends on the island, elevation, and activity.

Spring

Spring brings cherry blossoms to lower mountains while snow remains deep at higher elevations.

Low- and mid-elevation hiking may be excellent, but alpine trails can still require crampons, an ice axe, winter navigation skills, and avalanche awareness.

Summer

July through September is the principal season for climbing Mount Fuji and hiking in the highest parts of the Japanese Alps.

Mountain huts and transportation services are most likely to be operating during this period. Summer also brings alpine flowers and better access to high trailheads.

However, hikers should prepare for heat at lower elevations, intense sun, afternoon thunderstorms, heavy rain, humidity, and typhoons.

Autumn

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in the Japanese mountains.

Foliage begins at high elevations and gradually moves into lower valleys. Conditions are often clearer and cooler than in midsummer.

Early snow can arrive in the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido, and northern Honshu, while many mountain huts begin closing before winter.

Winter

Winter transforms Japan’s mountains into serious snow environments.

Hokkaido, Tohoku, the Japanese Alps, and areas along the Sea of Japan receive especially heavy snowfall. Winter hiking may involve avalanche terrain, whiteouts, cornices, deep snow, ice, severe wind chill, and very short daylight hours.

Only experienced and properly equipped mountaineers should attempt major high peaks in winter.

Before beginning a hike:

  1. Check the official weather forecast.
