
🏔️ Overview
Venezuela contains some of the most varied mountain landscapes in South America. Its terrain ranges from the high, rugged summits of the Andes to forested coastal ranges and the enormous flat-topped mountains known as tepuis in the Guiana Highlands.
The country’s highest elevations are concentrated in the western state of Mérida. Here, the Cordillera de Mérida rises to Pico Bolívar, Venezuela’s highest mountain at approximately 4,978 meters (16,332 feet). Other major Andean summits include Pico Humboldt, Pico La Concha, Pico Bonpland, and Pico Piedras Blancas.
Northern Venezuela is crossed by the Cordillera de la Costa, or Venezuelan Coastal Range. These mountains rise sharply between the Caribbean Sea and the country’s most densely populated valleys. In southeastern Venezuela, the landscape changes dramatically as isolated sandstone plateaus tower above tropical forests and savannas.
Mount Roraima, Auyán-tepui, Kukenán-tepui, and the other tepuis of the Guiana Highlands are not part of the Andes. They are remnants of ancient plateaus that have been separated and reshaped by erosion over immense periods of geological time.

📍 Major Mountain Regions
The Venezuelan Andes
The Venezuelan Andes form the northeastern end of the much larger Andes mountain system. They enter Venezuela from Colombia and divide into two principal branches: the Cordillera de Mérida and the Sierra de Perijá.
The Cordillera de Mérida extends through Mérida, Táchira, and Trujillo states, with additional highlands reaching neighboring areas. It contains nearly all of Venezuela’s highest mountains and its most extensive high-elevation páramo environments.
The range includes several important subranges and massifs:

- Sierra de la Culata
- Sierra de Santo Domingo
- Macizo del Tamá
- Páramos de Batallón and La Negra
Deep river valleys separate the principal ridges. The Chama River valley, for example, divides the Sierra Nevada de Mérida from the Sierra de la Culata.
Sierra de Perijá
The Sierra de Perijá rises along the border between Venezuela and Colombia. It is geographically connected to the eastern Colombian Andes but is separated from the Cordillera de Mérida by the low-lying Táchira Depression.
The range contains forested slopes, limestone formations, high ridges, and isolated páramo habitats. Its relative remoteness has helped preserve important ecosystems, although agriculture, settlement, and resource extraction have affected portions of the range.
Venezuelan Coastal Range
The Venezuelan Coastal Range, also called the Cordillera de la Costa, runs across northern Venezuela near the Caribbean coast. It consists of several parallel ridges separated by valleys and depressions.
The range’s western and central sections include:

- Serranía del Interior
- Waraira Repano, formerly widely known as El Ávila
- Pico Naiguatá
- Henri Pittier National Park
Pico Naiguatá is generally identified as the range’s highest summit, reaching approximately 2,765 meters (9,072 feet). The nearby Waraira Repano massif forms the dramatic mountain backdrop north of Caracas.
Farther east, the coastal mountains continue through the states of Anzoátegui, Sucre, and Monagas. These eastern ranges approach the Gulf of Paria and the island of Trinidad.
Guiana Highlands and the Tepuis
The Guiana Highlands occupy much of southeastern Venezuela, particularly south and east of the Orinoco River. They belong to the ancient Guiana Shield, one of the oldest exposed geological regions in the world.
The area is famous for its tepuis—large, isolated mountains with broad summit plateaus and nearly vertical cliffs. Notable examples include:

A GPS survey conducted in 2002 calculated an elevation of 4,978.4 ± 0.4 meters for Pico Bolívar. Some international topographic databases use a slightly higher figure of approximately 4,981 meters.
Pico Bolívar is also an ultra-prominent peak because its topographic prominence exceeds 1,500 meters.
🪨 Geology
Venezuela’s mountains developed through several different geological processes and cannot be treated as a single uniform system.
The Venezuelan Andes are relatively young mountains created by tectonic deformation along the northern margin of the South American Plate. Compression and movement involving the Caribbean and South American plates uplifted, folded, and fractured the crust. Continued erosion subsequently carved the mountains into steep ridges, deep valleys, and isolated rock pinnacles.
The Cordillera de la Costa is also tectonically complex. It contains metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary rocks that have been uplifted and faulted along northern Venezuela.
The Guiana Highlands are much older. Their foundation consists of ancient crystalline rocks belonging to the Guiana Shield. Above this basement are resistant sandstone formations that were gradually divided by rivers, weathering, and erosion.
The tepuis are therefore primarily erosional remnants, not volcanoes. Their resistant horizontal rock layers helped preserve their broad plateaus while softer surrounding formations were worn away.

🌿 Flora & Fauna
Venezuela’s mountain ecosystems change considerably with elevation, rainfall, geology, and geographic location.
Lower Andean slopes support tropical and subtropical forests. At middle elevations, these forests become cooler and wetter, producing cloud-forest environments filled with ferns, mosses, orchids, bromeliads, and epiphytes.
Above the main forest belt lies the páramo, a high-elevation ecosystem of grasslands, wetlands, shrubs, and rocky slopes. One of its most recognizable plants is the frailejón, a member of the genus Espeletia. Its dense rosette of woolly leaves helps it survive intense sunlight, cold nights, wind, and rapidly changing weather.
Animals associated with the Venezuelan Andes include the spectacled bear, puma, white-tailed deer, small Andean mammals, hummingbirds, and numerous amphibians. Some species occupy extremely restricted habitats.
The Guiana Highlands contain tropical forest, open savanna, cliff vegetation, wetlands, and summit communities. Because individual tepuis are separated by sheer cliffs and large areas of lower terrain, their summits function like ecological islands.
Carnivorous plants, orchids, bromeliads, small reptiles, and highly localized frogs occur on the tepuis. Several summit species are known from only one mountain or one small group of neighboring plateaus.

Pico Bolívar
Pico Bolívar is a serious high-altitude mountaineering objective rather than an ordinary hiking summit. Common approaches pass through Sierra Nevada National Park, with routes beginning near Mérida, La Mucuy, Los Nevados, or the high stations of the Mérida cable-car system.
The summit area contains exposed ridges, steep rock, loose terrain, and rapidly changing weather. Climbers generally require acclimatization, route-finding ability, rock-climbing experience, and appropriate safety equipment.
Sierra Nevada Traverses
Longer routes through the Sierra Nevada may connect high mountain lakes, páramo valleys, Pico Humboldt, Pico Bonpland, Pico Espejo, and the Pico Bolívar massif. These expeditions can involve several days of camping above 3,000 or 4,000 meters.
Some summits or sensitive high-altitude areas may be subject to changing access restrictions intended to protect fragile ecosystems.
Mount Roraima
Mount Roraima is normally approached from Venezuela through the Gran Sabana. The standard trek begins near Paraitepui and follows rivers, savanna, forest, and a natural ramp through the mountain’s cliffs.
The journey usually requires several days. Although the standard route is not a technical rock climb, it involves long distances, slippery surfaces, river crossings, heavy rain, and remote camping.
The summit is not a smooth open table. It contains broken rock formations, pools, ravines, boggy ground, and maze-like terrain that can become difficult to navigate in mist.
Waraira Repano and Pico Naiguatá
The mountains north of Caracas offer some of Venezuela’s most accessible highland trails. Routes climb from the urban edge into forest, cloud forest, exposed ridges, and cooler summit terrain.
Pico Naiguatá is a demanding outing because of its length, elevation gain, and rugged upper slopes. Shorter routes within Waraira Repano National Park provide views over Caracas and the Caribbean coast.

The best season depends on the region and the activity.
The Venezuelan Andes generally experience their driest conditions between approximately December and March or April. These months may offer more stable conditions for trekking, although freezing temperatures, cloud, strong sunlight, and occasional snow can still occur at high elevations.
The Gran Sabana and tepui region receives rain throughout the year. The relatively drier months are often preferred for the Mount Roraima trek, but streams, mud, mist, and showers remain possible during any season.
Northern coastal mountains can be visited throughout much of the year. Trails are generally easier during drier periods, while the wetter season produces greener forests, stronger streams, and more slippery conditions.
Park rules, guide requirements, transportation, border procedures, and route access can change. Visitors should confirm current conditions before beginning an expedition.

Pico Humboldt
Pico Humboldt is one of the country’s highest mountains and was the location of Venezuela’s final remaining glacier. By 2024, the shrinking ice had become too small to retain its former glacier classification.
Seasonal snow and small patches of ice can still occur, but Venezuela no longer has a generally recognized active glacier.
Mount Roraima
