The Bâsca river basin surrounding Penteleu contains extensive Paleogene flysch deposits, including:

One of the principal routes begins at Gura Cernatului, approximately 7 kilometers from Varlaam.

A marked route follows:

Gura Cernatului – Stâna Cernatului – Penteleu Peak – Crucea Fetei – Bălescu Mare – Bălescuțu – Mușa

The complete traverse is listed at approximately 9–10 hours. The ascent from Gura Cernatului to Penteleu itself takes roughly four hours under normal conditions.

Another marked approach reaches Penteleu from Varlaam, passing through:

Varlaam – Silvestru Peak – Monteoru Peak – Masa Fântâniței – Șaua Caprei – Golul Miclăuș – Viforâta Peak – Penteleu Peak

This route provides an extended journey through the Penteleu Massif and passes several of its important ridges and summits.

Because routes can be long and pass through remote forest, hikers should carry sufficient food and water and should not rely entirely on mobile-phone coverage.
