🏔️ Overview
Popocatépetl is a massive active stratovolcano in central Mexico and one of the country’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Rising more than 5,300 meters above sea level, it is the second-highest mountain in Mexico, surpassed only by Pico de Orizaba.
The volcano stands within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a broad zone of volcanic mountains extending across central Mexico. Its nearly symmetrical cone rises dramatically above the surrounding highlands southeast of Mexico City and west of Puebla.

Popocatépetl stands in central Mexico at approximately 19.023° N, 98.622° W, roughly 70 kilometers southeast of Mexico City.
The mountain lies around the meeting area of the states of Puebla, Morelos, and the State of Mexico. Puebla lies to the east, while the enormous Mexico City metropolitan area is northwest of the volcano.
Popocatépetl is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, an extensive volcanic province crossing Mexico roughly from west to east. Several of the country’s highest mountains occur within this region.

🪨 Geology
Popocatépetl is a composite volcano, or stratovolcano, built through repeated eruptions of lava, ash, pumice, and other volcanic material.
It sits in a continental subduction-zone environment within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This region contains numerous volcanoes created by complex interactions between tectonic plates beneath Mexico.
The volcano is composed principally of volcanic rocks including andesite, basaltic andesite, dacite, and basalt.
Popocatépetl has not always looked exactly as it does today. Geological evidence indicates that several earlier volcanic edifices existed in the area. At least three major ancestral cones underwent large gravitational collapses during the Pleistocene, producing enormous debris-avalanche deposits south of the volcano.
The modern Popocatépetl cone subsequently developed south of an older volcanic structure known as El Fraile.
At the summit is a steep-walled crater roughly 400 by 600 meters across. Repeated eruptions have altered its interior through explosions and cycles of lava-dome growth and destruction.
Popocatépetl’s eruptive history also includes very large explosive events. At least three major Plinian eruptions have occurred since the middle Holocene. These events generated pyroclastic flows and large lahars capable of traveling far down surrounding valleys.
🌋 Eruptive History & Current Activity
Popocatépetl has one of the best-documented histories of volcanic activity in Mexico. Accounts of eruptions extend back to pre-Columbian times, with records dating from at least the 14th century.
Three particularly large Plinian eruptions are known from the middle to late Holocene, with the most recent occurring around 800 CE. These prehistoric eruptions produced powerful pyroclastic flows and lahars.
Historical activity continued after the arrival of Europeans.
During the 20th century, the volcano experienced activity between approximately 1919 and 1927. It then entered several decades of relative quiet.
Signs of renewed unrest became increasingly apparent during the early 1990s. In December 1994, Popocatépetl produced significant ash emissions after roughly half a century without comparable eruptive activity.
The volcano has remained persistently active since then. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program considers the current eruptive period to have begun in January 2005.

❄️ What Happened to Popocatépetl’s Glaciers?
Older photographs and descriptions frequently portray Popocatépetl as a glacier-covered volcano. That is no longer an accurate description of the mountain.
Popocatépetl once supported small tropical glaciers near its summit. Those glaciers had already been retreating before the volcano’s renewed activity in the 1990s.
After eruptive activity increased, volcanic ash, hot material, pyroclastic deposits, and other processes accelerated the loss of ice. Scientific studies concluded that the volcanic activity of the 1990s and early 2000s significantly accelerated glacier retreat.
By the early 2000s, Popocatépetl’s glacier system was considered effectively extinct.
Seasonal snow and ice can still appear on the upper mountain, but these should not be confused with the permanent glaciers shown in historical photographs.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
Popocatépetl is part of a much larger protected high-mountain ecosystem centered on Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park.
Vegetation changes considerably with altitude.
At elevations of roughly 2,900 to 3,400 meters, forests include oyamel fir (Abies religiosa) along with several pine species.
Higher on the mountains, particularly between about 3,500 and 4,200 meters, open forests of Hartweg’s pine (Pinus hartwegii) become important. These trees are unusually tolerant of cold, snow, strong winds, and the harsh conditions of Mexico’s high mountains.
Near and above approximately 4,000 meters, forests gradually give way to alpine grasslands dominated by bunch grasses and other low-growing plants adapted to cold temperatures and intense sunlight.
