
🏔️ Overview
The Ruby Mountains are a rugged mountain range in northeastern Nevada, rising dramatically above the dry valleys of the Great Basin. Despite their location in one of the most arid parts of the United States, the Rubies contain high alpine ridges, glacier-carved canyons, clear mountain streams, wildflower meadows, and more than two dozen alpine lakes.
The range is centered primarily in Elko County and forms one of the most distinctive mountain landscapes in Nevada’s Basin and Range country. Much of the high country lies within Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, while approximately 92,652 acres are protected as the Ruby Mountains Wilderness.
The highest summit is Ruby Dome. Modern LiDAR measurements place its elevation at approximately 11,391 feet (3,472 meters). The traditional mapped elevation of 11,387 feet (3,471 meters) remains widely used by the U.S. Forest Service and other sources.
Ruby Dome is also the highest point in Elko County. It should not, however, be confused with Nevada’s state high point, which is Boundary Peak in the White Mountains.
Perhaps the best-known feature of the range is Lamoille Canyon, a spectacular U-shaped valley carved by Pleistocene glaciers. The canyon provides access to some of the most popular hiking, backpacking, camping, and sightseeing destinations in the Rubies.

📍 Location
The Ruby Mountains rise in northeastern Nevada, southeast of the city of Elko. They form part of the enormous Basin and Range Province, where long mountain chains alternate with broad, internally drained valleys.
The range generally trends north to south. Ruby Valley lies along much of its eastern side, while Lamoille and Huntington valleys lie to the west.
Unlike mountain systems whose rivers eventually reach an ocean, much of the surrounding Great Basin has internal drainage. Water flows into closed basins where it ultimately evaporates or infiltrates the ground.
The Rubies stand unusually high above this surrounding high-desert landscape. Valleys near the mountains may lie around 6,000 feet above sea level, while several summits rise above 11,000 feet.
The contrast creates dramatic local relief and allows cool, moist alpine environments to exist only a short distance above sagebrush-dominated desert.

📏 Elevation & Prominence
The highest mountain in the range is Ruby Dome.
Modern LiDAR data compiled by Peakbagger give the summit an elevation of approximately 11,391.2 feet (3,472 meters). Older USGS mapping and many Forest Service publications continue to use 11,387 feet.
Ruby Dome has approximately:
- 4,814 feet (1,467 meters) of topographic prominence
- 94.7 miles (152.4 kilometers) of topographic isolation
That substantial prominence means Ruby Dome rises independently above the surrounding terrain rather than simply forming a minor point along a higher ridge.
Peakbagger identifies North Schell Peak in Nevada’s Schell Creek Range as Ruby Dome’s nearest higher neighbor. Its line parent is South Schell Peak.
Ruby Dome is also the highest point in Elko County.
The Ruby Mountains contain 10 peaks above 11,000 feet, giving the range an unusually alpine character for Nevada.
🪨 Geology
The Ruby Mountains are far more geologically complicated than a simple block of granite.
They are part of a region strongly affected by crustal compression, metamorphism, uplift, extension, faulting, and erosion over hundreds of millions of years.
One particularly important feature is the Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt metamorphic core complex. Deeply buried rocks were subjected to substantial heat, pressure, and deformation before later tectonic extension helped bring them toward the surface.
Around Lamoille Canyon, exposed rocks include:
- Gneiss
- Granite
- Marble
- Pegmatite
- Quartz-rich rocks
- Metamorphic rocks containing minerals such as biotite and diopside
Some exposures show intense folding and deformation, providing geologists with evidence of conditions that once existed deep within Earth’s crust.
More recent tectonic extension helped create the modern Basin and Range landscape. Normal faulting raised mountain blocks relative to neighboring valleys, and this tectonic activity remains an important part of the geology of northeastern Nevada.
Ice Age Glaciation
The present appearance of the high Ruby Mountains owes much to Pleistocene glaciers.
Large glaciers once filled several of the range’s valleys. As they moved, they widened and deepened existing stream valleys and produced classic alpine landforms.

- Cirques
- Arêtes
- Moraines
- Hanging valleys
- Glacially polished rock
- Alpine tarns and cirque lakes
Lamoille Canyon is the most famous example. Its broad U-shaped profile contrasts with the narrower V-shaped valleys typically produced primarily by streams.

🌿 Flora & Fauna
The elevation difference between the surrounding valleys and the high crest creates several distinct ecological zones.
Lower slopes are dominated largely by the sagebrush and dry vegetation characteristic of the Great Basin. Canyons support wetter environments with grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, cottonwoods, and stands of aspen.
Higher elevations support increasingly sparse subalpine vegetation, alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and exposed ridges.
Spring snowmelt provides water for mountain streams and helps sustain a much greener landscape than visitors might expect to find in northeastern Nevada.
Wildlife within the Ruby Mountains Wilderness includes:

The region is particularly important for mule deer, and the high cliffs provide suitable habitat for mountain goats and bighorn sheep.
One of the range’s more unusual residents is the Himalayan snowcock, a large high-elevation bird introduced to Nevada from Asia. The species has established a population in the rugged alpine terrain of the Rubies.
Streams and alpine waters also support trout, including waters associated with native Lahontan cutthroat trout populations.

The Ruby Mountains offer everything from relatively short mountain walks to demanding multi-day backpacking trips and off-trail summit climbs.
Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail
The best-known long-distance route is the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail.
The U.S. Forest Service currently describes the main trail as approximately 33 miles long, running along the high crest of the range through spectacular alpine terrain.
The route passes or approaches:
- High mountain passes
- Alpine meadows
- Glacial basins
- Liberty Lake
- Favre Lake
- Overland Lake
- Numerous high ridges and viewpoints
Some published trip distances are longer because backpackers include access trails, alternate endpoints, or side trips.
The trail enters designated wilderness, where motorized and mechanized travel—including bicycles—is prohibited.
Lamoille Canyon
Lamoille Canyon is the principal recreational gateway into the Ruby Mountains.
The canyon provides access to campgrounds, trailheads, mountain streams, alpine lakes, and the northern portion of the Ruby Crest Trail.
Road’s End near the upper canyon is a major starting point for hikes into the Ruby Mountains Wilderness.
Island Lake
Island Lake occupies a classic glacial cirque above Lamoille Canyon.
The hike offers an excellent opportunity to see the effects of Pleistocene glaciation firsthand, including the steep headwalls and U-shaped valleys characteristic of formerly glaciated terrain.
Ruby Dome
Climbing Ruby Dome is considerably more demanding than the developed trails around Lamoille Canyon.
The commonly used approach travels through the Hennen Canyon and Griswold Lake area before continuing over rough, largely unmaintained alpine terrain toward the summit.
The upper portion requires route-finding and scrambling rather than simply following a maintained summit trail.
Ruby Dome should therefore be treated as a serious backcountry objective rather than an ordinary walk-up mountain.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit
For most hiking and backpacking, mid-summer through early fall provides the most reliable access to the Ruby Mountains.
Summer
July and August typically provide the greatest access to the high country.

Heavy snow transforms the upper Ruby Mountains into serious winter backcountry terrain.
Skiing, snowshoeing, and other winter recreation are possible, but avalanche conditions, difficult access, cold temperatures, and rapidly changing weather require appropriate equipment and experience.
Spring can remain snowy at high elevations even when the surrounding valleys have already become warm and dry.

Lamoille Canyon
Lamoille Canyon is the signature landscape of the Ruby Mountains.
Its steep walls, waterfalls, alpine vegetation, glacial features, and access to high-country trails make it the most popular introduction to the range.
It is sometimes informally called “Nevada’s Yosemite” because of its spectacular glacier-carved form.
Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge
The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge lies along Ruby Valley near the southern end of the range.
The refuge protects approximately 40,000 acres of marshes, meadows, grasslands, and upland habitats. Its spring-fed wetlands form an important wildlife oasis in the otherwise dry Great Basin.
Waterfowl, shorebirds, mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and numerous plant species depend on the refuge.
Elko
Elko is the principal community serving visitors approaching the Ruby Mountains from the northwest.

East Humboldt Range
