The Sierras Pampeanas are one of Argentina’s most distinctive mountain regions: a broad system of isolated ranges rising from the plains and arid basins of central and northwestern Argentina.
Unlike the nearby Andes, the Sierras Pampeanas do not form one continuous mountain chain. Instead, they consist of numerous north–south-oriented ranges separated by broad valleys, desert basins, salt flats, and lowlands. Many are enormous blocks of ancient continental crust that were uplifted along faults as Andean mountain building affected the interior of South America.

📍 Location
The Sierras Pampeanas occupy an enormous area of central and northwestern Argentina, east of the main Andean crest.
Their position is one of the reasons they are so geologically interesting.
Rather than standing directly along the boundary between the Nazca and South American plates, many of these mountains rise hundreds of kilometers east of the principal Andean chain.
The mountain blocks are separated by valleys and basins that can create striking changes in relief. A traveler may cross an apparently flat or gently rolling landscape before encountering a mountain front rising suddenly thousands of meters above the surrounding country.

🪨 Geology
The geology of the Sierras Pampeanas is considerably older than their present-day mountainous appearance.
Much of the region consists of ancient crystalline basement rocks, including metamorphic and igneous formations that preserve a complicated history stretching back hundreds of millions—and in some places more than a billion—years.
Ancient Continental Crust
Common rocks within different parts of the Sierras Pampeanas include:
