🏔️ Overview

The Henry Mountains are an isolated mountain range rising above the desert landscape of south-central Utah. Located primarily in Garfield County, with the northern part extending into Wayne County, the range stands between Capitol Reef National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Although the Henry Mountains are not among Utah’s tallest ranges, they are among its most geologically significant. They are a classic example of mountains formed by igneous intrusions called laccoliths, in which magma pushed between layers of sedimentary rock and lifted the overlying strata into enormous domes.

The mountains became internationally important to geology after Grove Karl Gilbert studied them during the 1870s. His work helped establish the scientific understanding of laccoliths and made the Henry Mountains one of the classic locations in the history of American geology.

The range is also notable for its isolation. Large areas remain accessible primarily by unpaved backcountry roads, and cellular service, water, and other services can be extremely limited.

The highest point is Mount Ellen, which rises to approximately 11,524 feet (3,513 meters) according to modern U.S. Geological Survey information.

📍 Location

The Henry Mountains rise from the Colorado Plateau of south-central Utah, generally south of Hanksville.

They occupy a remote region east of the Waterpocket Fold and between two of southern Utah’s most famous protected landscapes:

  • Capitol Reef National Park to the west
  • Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell to the east and southeast

Utah State Routes 24, 95, and 276 provide access to the wider region, but much of the interior of the mountains is reached by dirt and gravel roads.

Unlike the heavily visited Wasatch Front or Utah’s major national parks, the Henry Mountains contain few developed facilities. That isolation is a major part of their character.

The Bureau of Land Management administers extensive public lands throughout the area.

The Henry Mountains rise dramatically above surrounding desert basins, benches, badlands, and canyon country.

Their three most prominent high summits are:

Mount Ellen

Mount Ellen is the highest summit in the Henry Mountains and the highest point in Garfield County.

Rather than consisting of a single sharp volcanic cone, the Mount Ellen area forms an enormous structural dome. The Bureau of Land Management describes the Mount Ellen dome as approximately 12 to 15 miles across.

Its higher elevations support forests and mountain meadows that contrast dramatically with the arid desert surrounding the range.

Mount Pennell

Mount Pennell is the second-highest major summit of the Henry Mountains.

It stands south of Mount Ellen and is another major center of igneous intrusion. Its steep slopes, canyons, exposed rock, forests, and high ridges create some of the most rugged terrain in the central Henry Mountains.

Mount Hillers

Mount Hillers rises farther south and is characterized by steep slopes, radial canyons, jagged ridges, and dramatically tilted sedimentary rocks surrounding its igneous core.

The Mount Hillers area provides particularly good examples of the relationship between underground magma intrusion and deformation of the sedimentary layers above it.

The Little Rockies

The southernmost portion of the range includes Mount Ellsworth and Mount Holmes.

This lower group is sometimes called the Little Rockies, although it is geologically part of the Henry Mountains rather than the Rocky Mountain system.

🪨 Geology

Geology is what makes the Henry Mountains truly exceptional.

Most familiar mountains are associated with large-scale faulting, folding, volcanic eruptions, or tectonic collisions. The Henry Mountains formed primarily because magma intruded into sedimentary rocks beneath the surface.

Formation of the Laccoliths

Roughly 23 to 29 million years ago, during the Oligocene Epoch, magma moved upward through the crust beneath what is now southern Utah.

Instead of reaching the surface in large volcanic eruptions, much of this magma spread laterally between existing layers of sedimentary rock.

As magma accumulated, it pushed the overlying layers upward.

The resulting intrusion is known as a laccolith.

A simplified sequence is:

  1. Magma rises through fractures in the crust.
  2. It encounters layered sedimentary rocks.
  3. Magma spreads laterally between those layers.
  4. The growing intrusion pushes the overlying rocks upward.
  5. The magma cools and solidifies underground.
  6. Millions of years of erosion expose portions of the intrusive rock and surrounding tilted strata.

This process created several separate intrusive centers that now form the major mountains of the range.

A Landmark in Geological Science

The Henry Mountains occupy an important place in the history of geology.

Geologist Grove Karl Gilbert explored the mountains in 1875 and 1876 and published his landmark Report on the Geology of the Henry Mountains in 1877.

His investigation showed how underground igneous intrusions could deform the layers above them.

Gilbert used the term laccolite, from which the modern geological term laccolith developed.

Because erosion has exposed both intrusive rocks and dramatically tilted surrounding sedimentary layers, geologists can examine structures that normally remain hidden deep underground.

The Henry Mountains consequently remain an important natural laboratory for studying shallow magma intrusion.

🌿 Flora & Fauna

The enormous difference between the surrounding desert and the high mountains creates several ecological zones.

Lower elevations are dominated by dry Colorado Plateau vegetation, including:

  • Saltbush
  • Sagebrush
  • Pinyon pine
  • Utah juniper

As elevation increases, cooler and wetter conditions support forests containing species such as:

  • Ponderosa pine
  • Douglas fir
  • Aspen
  • Subalpine fir

Some higher slopes and ridges support mountain grasslands and open meadows.

Henry Mountains Bison Herd

One of the range’s most famous natural features is its free-ranging American bison herd.

The modern herd began in 1941, when 18 bison from Yellowstone National Park were released in the region. Additional animals were introduced shortly afterward.

Unlike bison living within fenced reserves, Henry Mountains bison can move across a large expanse of rugged public land.

The herd is managed cooperatively by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the Bureau of Land Management.

Other wildlife found in the broader Henry Mountains region includes:

🥾 Hiking & Backcountry Recreation

The Henry Mountains offer hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, scenic driving, hunting, and remote backcountry exploration.

However, this is not a conventional trail-centered mountain destination.

Many routes involve:

  • Unpaved roads
  • Four-wheel-drive travel
  • Limited or nonexistent signage
  • Route finding
  • Long distances from assistance
  • Scarce water
  • Limited cellular service

Mount Ellen

Mount Ellen is the best-known summit objective in the range.

High-clearance roads can provide relatively high starting points when conditions permit, making the final hike considerably shorter than its 11,000-foot elevation might suggest.

Road conditions are an important part of the challenge. Rain and snow can turn backcountry roads into difficult or impassable routes.

Mount Pennell and Mount Hillers

Mount Pennell and Mount Hillers provide more rugged backcountry objectives.

Travel may involve steep slopes, loose rock, scrambling, route finding, and considerable distance from established services.

These mountains should not be treated as ordinary maintained-trail destinations.

⛺ Camping

The Bureau of Land Management maintains several small developed campgrounds in the Henry Mountains, including:

  • Lonesome Beaver Campground
  • McMillan Springs Campground
  • Starr Springs Campground

Facilities are basic compared with those in major national parks.

Visitors should not assume that drinking water, fuel, food, cellular service, or emergency assistance will be readily available.

Dispersed backcountry travel is also possible in many areas where regulations permit it.

Always check current BLM regulations, road conditions, fire restrictions, and campground status before traveling.

The best season depends strongly on elevation.

Spring

Spring can provide pleasant temperatures in the lower foothills and desert.

Higher elevations may retain snow considerably longer, while spring storms can make dirt roads muddy or impassable.

Summer

Summer provides the greatest likelihood that high roads and ridges will be free of snow.

However, lower elevations can become extremely hot.

Afternoon thunderstorms can also create lightning hazards on exposed ridges and produce flash flooding or muddy road conditions.

Autumn

Early autumn is often one of the most appealing times to explore the range.

Temperatures become more comfortable at lower elevations while high-country access may remain open until significant snow arrives.

Winter

Winter transforms the highest Henry Mountains into a snow-covered landscape.

Backcountry roads may become difficult or impossible, and cold temperatures greatly increase the consequences of vehicle problems or navigation mistakes.

The Henry Mountains occupy one of the most spectacular landscape regions in the American Southwest.

Capitol Reef National Park

Immediately west of the Henry Mountains lies Capitol Reef National Park.

The park protects much of the Waterpocket Fold, an enormous wrinkle in Earth’s crust extending for roughly 100 miles across southern Utah.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

South and east of the Henry Mountains lies Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, including Lake Powell and extensive Colorado River canyon country.

Hanksville

Hanksville is the principal small community north of the mountains and serves as an important access point for travelers entering the Henry Mountains backcountry.

Uinta Mountains

Farther north in Utah, the Uinta Mountains provide a dramatic contrast to the Henrys.

📜 Exploration & Naming

The Henry Mountains were among the last major mountain ranges in the contiguous United States to be systematically explored, named, and mapped by Euro-American surveyors.

Explorer John Wesley Powell encountered the mountains during his explorations of the Colorado River region.

The range was ultimately named for Joseph Henry, the influential American scientist who became the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.
