
🏔️ Overview
The Saint Elias Mountains are one of North America’s most spectacular mountain systems, rising across southeastern Alaska, southwestern Yukon, and the extreme northwestern corner of British Columbia.
They form part of the larger Pacific Coast Ranges and contain an extraordinary concentration of high peaks, enormous glaciers, deep valleys, and rugged wilderness.
The range’s highest summit is Mount Logan, which reaches 5,959 meters (19,551 feet) in Canada’s Yukon. Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada and the second-highest mountain in North America after Denali.
The Saint Elias Mountains are also notable for their position beside the Gulf of Alaska. 📍 Location
The Saint Elias Mountains occupy the rugged borderlands of southeastern Alaska and western Canada.
On the Canadian side, the highest portion of the range dominates southwestern Yukon. Mount Logan, Mount Lucania, King Peak, Mount Steele, and numerous other giant summits rise within or near Kluane National Park and Reserve.
Farther south and west, the mountains cross the Alaska–Yukon boundary and extend toward the Gulf of Alaska. Several major peaks actually sit directly on the international border.
One of the most famous is Mount Saint Elias, which rises to approximately 5,489 meters (18,008 feet). It is the second-highest mountain in both Canada and the United States.

Published elevations can differ slightly among maps and mountain databases, particularly for remote ice-covered summits where snow and ice conditions complicate measurement.

🪨 Geology
The Saint Elias Mountains are geologically young, dynamic, and still actively rising.
Their formation is closely connected to the collision of the Yakutat terrane with the North American Plate.
The Yakutat terrane is a thick fragment of crust moving northwestward along the southern margin of Alaska. As this buoyant block collides with and moves beneath North America, the crust is compressed, faulted, folded, thickened, and uplifted.
This ongoing collision has helped build the exceptionally high terrain of the Saint Elias region.
Unlike an ancient mountain range that has become tectonically quiet, the Saint Elias Mountains remain part of an active deformation zone. Earthquakes, fault movement, uplift, erosion, and glacial processes continue to reshape the landscape.
The mountains contain a complicated mixture of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks representing crustal fragments that were assembled along the western margin of North America over long periods of geological time.
