Several very high named features are excluded because they are subsidiary summits. These include the North Peak of Mount McKinley and Good Neighbor Peak, the border summit of Mount Vancouver. Mount Vancouver’s highest summit lies in Yukon, Canada, rather than on the international boundary.
Mount Whitney, at approximately 14,505 feet (4,421 meters), is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States but falls just outside the national top ten because of Alaska’s exceptionally high peaks.

The mountains of the United States were created by several different geological processes.
